Chapter 3

مؤلف: Heronage
Once I hung up, I didn't hesitate. I started purging every trace of Claus from my life.

I couldn't stand the thought of a single lingering scent of his in the air. It made my skin crawl.

My butler, Rowan Gibbs, went pale as he took in the wreckage of the suite. "Luna Aserina, what's—"

"Don't call me that ever again! I'm having him remove the mark!"

I looked at Rowan. "Change every security clearance in the building. Claus is banned from entering this place without my permission."

Rowan's knees buckled. "But Alpha Claus—"

"Either do exactly as I say, or you can pack your bags and leave with him."

When Dad helped Claus rise to power, he ensured I retained control of Nightshade Corp's internal management, security protocols, and primary accounts.

Rowan didn't dare argue further. He just nodded frantically.

I even recalled my personal security details from the Blackthorn pack.

The men Claus had personally promoted looked sour as they were sidelined.

By the time the cleanup was finished, dawn was beginning to break. When Cecilia pulled up to pick me up, she took one look at the mountain of Claus' belongings piled at the curb and raised an eyebrow.

"That was quick," she noted.

I climbed into the car. "If I moved any slower, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to stop myself from going back there and stabbing him."

Cecilia chuckled and floored the accelerator. "Well, let's hold off on the murder for tonight. You need to clear your head."

She took me to the grittiest information exchange at Shadowport. On the surface, it sold liquor, but underneath, they traded in everything.

In the past, as the Luna of the Nightshade pack, I rarely set foot in places like this. But now, I no longer had that burden.

While Cecilia went off to hunt for intel, I sat alone and drank.

The liquor burned a trail from my throat to my stomach, making my eyes sting until I couldn't take another sip.

With the alcohol hitting me hard, I stepped outside to get some air.

My balance faltered, and I nearly took a tumble down the stone steps. Before I could hit the ground, a pair of steady hands caught me by the waist.

Startled, I looked up. It was a young man with damp black hair and eyes so clear they looked like a pup's after a rainstorm.

He looked down at me. His voice was soft and laced with just the right amount of concern. "Careful there."

As I stared at his impossibly clean face, my head spun from the booze. "Thanks."

He didn't let go immediately, as if making sure I was steady on my feet before slowly withdrawing his hands.

"You've had a lot to drink," he murmured. "Why don't you rest here for a moment?"

He spoke so softly, as if he were afraid of startling me.

It was a world apart from Claus, whose voice was always condescending. It made even his concern sound like a command.

I should have walked away, but my mind was such a mess that I actually listened to him and sank onto a velvet bench in the corridor.

He sat beside me, keeping a respectful distance.

I glanced at him sideways. He had black hair and black eyes. He looked young, but he had an incredibly composed presence.

"Is this how you usually hit on women?" I asked.

He blinked, then let out a soft laugh. "No."

"So, tonight's a first?"

"If you want it to be, sure."

He sounded so sweet, but there was a subtle hook in his tone that didn't go unnoticed.

I found myself smiling.

He was a wolf in sheep's clothing, playing his part well.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated. I didn't even have to look to know who it was.

I glanced at the name on the screen and swiped to decline, but it vibrated again immediately. I switched it to silent.

My series of actions surprised me.

In the past, no matter what I was doing, I'd drop everything to answer Claus.

I realized now just how much I'd let him consume my life.

"You don't have to answer if you don't want to," the young man whispered.

He reached out and tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was as light as a feather.

"And what about you?" I asked. "What's a boy like you doing at a black market at this hour? Airing out a hangover?"

He looked at me, silent for a long moment. "I-I'm here to catch someone."

His gaze intensified, and a wry smile touched his lips. "My future Luna is inside. We were supposed to bond next month, but I just found out she's with another man."

The shared sting of betrayal hit me like a physical blow. I felt a sudden, sharp kinship with him.

He whispered, "Your eyes are so red. It's fine. It's his loss for not realizing what he had."

The comfort felt so genuine that it actually warmed my heart.

I looked at him. "What do you plan to do if you catch her?"

I watched him closely as I asked, "Do you want revenge?"

He went quiet for two seconds, then looked up at me.

In that fleeting moment, the submissiveness in his eyes suddenly faded, replaced by a flash of something else entirely.

It was gone in a flash, but I saw it.

"If it's with you, then yes," he said.

"What a coincidence." I swirled the drink in my hand, a cold smile spreading across my face. "So do I."

Behind us, Cecilia appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a cigarette. She watched us with a calculating look.

"Go for it, Rina. I've got your back if things get messy," she said.

I smiled.

I knew her eyes followed us until we disappeared into the night.

Two weeks later, I received a call from an unfamiliar number. When I picked up, there was a long silence before Claus' raspy voice broke through. "Aserina, let's see each other one last time."He asked to meet at a small shop in the old market that sold burgers. When I arrived, the owner was just coming out with a plate of burgers. She froze when she saw me."Oh my! It's been ages since you two came by together. I used to tell my husband all the time that you two looked like the type to grow old together."She finished speaking with a smile. Only when she realized the tension between Claus and me did she shut her mouth awkwardly. When I sat down across from him, the Claus I once knew—the man who radiated high spirits and a commanding presence the moment he stepped into a room—was nowhere to be found. The shop was quiet, except for the sizzle of patties on the grill in the kitchen.I suddenly remembered many years ago, when I led the members of the Blackthorn pack to back Claus

The next day, I fully threw myself back into work.I attended meetings, reviewed audits, reorganized resource lines, and renegotiated supply agreements. I was so busy that I had to carve out time just to eat.I knew very well that the most important thing now wasn't finding another man but rebuilding my life and position.Once everything started falling into place, Claus had someone send me another letter. "Aserina, I won't remove the mark."Right. If he refused to let go, I'd be stuck with him forever.I had wanted to leave him some dignity, so he wouldn't be attacked by other wolves or be utterly destroyed. But now, it didn't seem necessary. That evening, I called Cecilia over and slid the evidence package across the table to her. "Release it."Cecilia flipped through it and whistled. "You really don't plan on leaving anyone alive this time, huh?""I gave them a chance," I said calmly. "They chose to refuse it."The next morning, both the Northia industry bulletin and the S

In the afternoon, Bella surprisingly reached out to meet with me.She chose a cafe near Shadowport, pretending it was for a "civilized conversation".But as soon as she sat down, her eyes turned red-rimmed, and the first thing she said was, "Why did you steal Ryan from me?"I almost laughed out loud. "Steal? Didn't you act all righteous when you took my mate? How come now, when your mate is standing next to me, you can't handle it?"Her face went pale. Through gritted teeth, she said, "You know he's mine!""And you knew Claus was my mate."I put my cup down, no longer bothering to spare her any courtesy. "Bella, stop playing the victim in front of me. You're not innocent. You knew he had a mate, yet you still climbed into his bed. Now you're just reaping what you sowed. What you did to others has come back to bite you."Her face turned a mix of red and white at my words. After a long pause, she finally managed to spit out, "Ryan never treated me like this before…""How did he t

The next day, Bella and Claus were at each other's throats.By the time I reached the company building, I could hear her shrill voice echoing from afar. "Why didn't you protect me yesterday? Didn't you say you didn't love Aserina anymore?"Claus, already exhausted from a sleepless night caused by Ryan and me, looked like he was about to explode."Shut up! How dare you argue with me? If you hadn't said those things to humiliate her, things wouldn't have turned out this way."Bella's eyes reddened in an instant. "Now it's my fault? Wasn't it you who brought me into the headquarters? Wasn't it you who talked behind her back, calling her disgusting? Wasn't it you who promised to mark me?"Watching them tear into each other was oddly satisfying. When two people, driven by ambition and desire, formed an alliance of convenience, their first instinct when things went wrong was always to shift the blame. And that was exactly what I wanted to see.I turned away and walked straight into t

Claus stood in the rain, his stare fixed on Ryan and on the unmistakable signs of intimacy on his neck. After a long pause, his voice came out hoarse. "Was it him… that night?"I didn't deny it. "Finally figured it out?"That one sentence seemed to rip apart his last illusion.Claus' face turned pale. Rainwater streamed down his jawline, and his knuckles let out a sharp crack as he tightened his fists. For days, he must have been lying to himself. He must have been convincing himself that I was just trying to rile him up, that I couldn't possibly let another man touch me, and that the unfamiliar scent was just part of a play I was putting on for him.But now, Ryan was standing beside me, marked with my scent.Claus could no longer lie to himself."Aserina."As he stared at me, he asked in a shaky voice, "Did you really sleep with him?"Ryan adjusted his collar, making sure the marks on his neck were even more obvious. "My lady, we did what we did. Can't we say it out loud?"

Ryan pressed the phone to his ear and said gently, "Alpha Claus, such a temper isn't good for your health."There was instant silence on the other end.The next second, Claus almost snarled through gritted teeth, "It's you."Ryan smiled, setting his fishing rod in place. "So what if it's me? You can't control your own Luna. Who can you blame?"As soon as those words left his mouth, I could almost imagine how twisted Claus' expression had become right now.Sure enough, his voice shifted completely. "You're asking for it—"But Ryan hung up the phone before Claus could finish. He turned to look at me, that mock-innocent smile still floating on the surface of his gaze. "I told him off for you."As I looked at him, I couldn't hold back a laugh. "Why did you stir things up?"His tone was lazy. "Who told him to treat you like that?"I asked, "Is it just for me? No ulterior motive?""My lady, compared to getting back at Bella, I want to help you more."He was so close that for a sp
