Chapter 2 Confrontation

Author: Nina Fortune
My legs were bleeding from walking too much, yet I trudged on for God knew how long. It was not until dawn had broken through did I manage to flag down a truck that was going into town. The driver gave me a look of disgust, but I could not care less.

I went back to the cold, unwelcoming mansion I used to call home. The gigantic TV in the living room was airing the morning entertainment section.

"According to inside sources, Mr Landton has reserved Christie's premier auction venue for tonight and intends to buy out the entire auction in order to secure Muse's Tears, the rare pink diamond Ms Chaucer has had her eye on. It is believed the diamond will be used for his proposal."

The scene changed, and the screen showed a vague photo of the auction venue. Zack carefully escorted Yvonne into his car, the tenderness on his face something I had never seen before.

A video played next. It was the outdoor dining spot of an upscale restaurant, and the place looked like a starlit sky on earth.

Yvonne was blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, while Zack was staring at her with intense, passionate love in his eyes. A lip-reading expert analysed the footage and revealed the wish he had made. "I hope Yvonne will be beside me for every birthday from now on."

The news anchor smiled enviously. "It seems there's more to it about why Mr. Landton didn't give chase after Ms. Chaucer ran out on him during their wedding. Perhaps he wasn't heartless. Perhaps he was waiting for something. Either way, let us congratulate this couple for their reunion."

I leaned on the icy wall and slowly slid down to the ground. So this was what it felt like to feel your heart die. There was no pain.

I held back all my emotions and mustered all my strength to text him. "Happy birthday, Zack. I'll help you with your wish."

Then I started packing. There was hardly anything that truly belonged to me. Everything here, including my pajamas, was his. I grabbed some old clothes and irrelevant books and tossed them into my suitcase.

When I zipped it up, the door opened. Zack came in. The moment our eyes met, the faint warmth in his expression vanished. "What are you doing?" He sounded displeased.

Before I even answered, he went to the smart display cabinet, typed in the passcode, and took out all the expensive items he got at various auctions. I had once asked him about them. At the time, he had simply told me they were only being stored here temporarily.

"Do you have anything you want to say to me, Zack?" Then I turned the television back on.

Zack's eyes scanned the screen, and they landed on my face, but nothing stirred. The frown remained, yet there was no explanation.

"You proposed to her, didn't you?" I looked at him and tried to smile, but it tasted bitter. "Every month, you went to the monastery to meditate, but you never let me go with you. You were with her, weren't you?"

He did not say no. In fact, he stayed so calm, it felt like he had nothing to do with this.

His tone was flat. "I hope you can understand that she won't get in our way. Unlike you, she's quiet and calm. She doesn't start any fights. And she was supposed to be my fiancee anyway. She's just back to where she's supposed to be."

He paused. "And you will stay with me like you've always done. I'll treat you like I always have."

Something inside me finally cracked. My eyes burned red. "What about me? What about the years I've spent with you?"

I searched his face, but his eyes were bottomless. Cold. Unreadable.

My voice began to shake. "Am I nothing but a placeholder that swooped in during a void? A tool to help you with your addiction? Or am I nothing but a mistress who will never see the day of light, whose name can never be spoken?"

"Ivanna Shaw!" He growled quietly, displeased by my sharp retort and meltdown. He massaged his forehead and took out a gold card from his coat, then he presented it to me. "Calm down. You know I hate seeing you act up. You're smart. You know what's the best choice for you."

It was the most absurd thing I had ever heard. I knocked the card from his hand. "If you choose her, then I'll disappear from your life forever!"

Another year had gone by. I was travelling through rural Toucany, Romagna, searching for inspiration, and had temporarily settled into an old stone house in the countryside. It was late at night, and the aging circuit ended up causing a fire, and the flames quickly spread from the workshop next door. When the thick smoke woke me up, choking and coughing, the fire had already blocked the exit.I covered my mouth and nose with a wet towel and desperately tried to search for other exits, but the lack of any hit me with hopelessness. Then a silhouette charged into the fire and ran into the house.Zack. He somehow managed to track me down every time. There were obvious burns across his arms and back, and his face was streaked with soot. He did not seem to notice any of it. He wrapped a drenched coat around me, pulled me tightly against his chest, and shielded my body with his own. Then he carried me to the second-floor window. Before I could react, he jumped. There was already an in

I knew nothing about the turmoil my disappearance had caused in Porton. By then, I had already settled in a quiet coastal town in Dilton. The skies were blue here, and the air smelled of freedom. It took me nearly three months to heal the wounds of the past. Though the memories of Zack still made my chest stuffy, it did not tear it apart like it used to. People probably only learned how to make peace with something and move forward after losing something precious, including themselves.Just because I had made peace did not mean I had forgotten anything, let alone forgive it. Zack's men at least had the conscience to pull the mastiff away right before I could get wounded. But the extreme shock, cold, humiliation, and the clear sense of pain from something falling within me told me my body was losing something. Warm liquid slid down the sides of my thigh, and it scared them. The people who had gathered to watch scattered almost immediately. None of them wanted to be around if someone

All the color drained from Yvonne's face. Even her lips turned white. She looked at him as if she had never seen this side of him before. The man who was gentle and did everything she wanted was being distant and firm with her.And he was doing it because of another woman. More specifically, because of the child that woman was carrying—the child he had never expected."You're taking responsibility?" she muttered, and tears slid down her cheeks. "What about me? We just… you proposed to me, and everyone knows that."Her tears softened Zack's heart, but it also frustrated him, and he was reminded of what I said to him. It was then he realized he never thought about losing or abandoning me.Confusion grasped his mind. He thought Yvonne was the one he loved. He thought he loved the bright, proud, innocent, and cheeky girl. The mischievous girl who had smiled at him beneath the sunlight and become the first love of his youth.Displeased by her family's arranged marriage for her, she sai

Explosions and gunfire thundered across the cinema screen. Intense gunfights and emotional dialogue screeched in the dark. Yvonne leaned against Zack, completely absorbed in the film. Every so often, she gasped or laughed softly.Zack could not even concentrate. He kept thinking about me, and that fact was making him uneasy. When an explosion scene came up, he was reminded of the blood he saw when I took that attack for him. His fingertips went cold, and he could remember how I looked at him when he was taking me in that mansion not too long ago.I had nothing but despair and sorrow in my eyes.An invisible hand squeezed his heart until he was suffocating, and his chest throbbed. He pretended to be calm and excused himself, then he went to the bathroom and gave orders to his underlings."Stop the lesson right now and take Ivanna home." After sending that, he fired off another one."Assemble Dr. Lawson's team, get all equipment, summon the MFM specialist, and go to the mansion as f

Zack froze, and his heart skipped a beat. Then his voice took a darker turn. "What do you mean, MFM? She's pregnant? Explain!"The doctor sounded stunned. "You're her family, aren't you? She's about six weeks pregnant. What exactly have you been doing? The first trimester is critical, and the fetus isn't stabilized yet. She needs rest. She's wounded and is emotionally turbulent. The fetus didn't look good during her checkup either. She nearly miscarried."Every word hit Zack like a sledgehammer. He nearly fainted, but he clenched the phone tightly until his knuckles were white. Then he remembered that one time he took me with force. He was reminded of my pale face and my silent tears. After that session, he took me into the bathroom for a shower. When he saw the bruises and wounds on my body, he felt uneasy and beat himself up a little. Then I tried to take some morning-after pills, but he tossed them into the bin.He promised, "If you get pregnant, carry it to term."At the time,

Time slowed to a stop, and all eyes were on him. I looked at him, the man who did what he wanted with me the night before, and a sliver of hope flared in my heart, though it was laughable.Impatiently, Zack said, "I don't know her. She's a thief." He held Yvonne tightly and moved his eyes away. Then he started comforting her quietly, "Did she scare you? It's not worth it. I got your cake, and it's your favorite flavor. Let's go. Don't waste your time looking at something unpleasant."Yvonne leaned on his chest and smiled. "You're the best." Then she said, "She's just a thief. Teach her a lesson and toss her out of Porton. We don't want any thievery hurting this land."The guard said, "Yes, Ms. Chaucer."Zack paused for a moment, but he did not turn back. Instead, he held Yvonne tighter and walked out of the place.…A kind stranger eventually found me and took me to hospital. After my wounds were treated, the doctor told me, "You're three months along now. Be careful. You're luck
