Chapter 4 A Lesson

Author: Nina Fortune
Time slowed to a stop, and all eyes were on him. I looked at him, the man who did what he wanted with me the night before, and a sliver of hope flared in my heart, though it was laughable.

Impatiently, Zack said, "I don't know her. She's a thief." He held Yvonne tightly and moved his eyes away. Then he started comforting her quietly, "Did she scare you? It's not worth it. I got your cake, and it's your favorite flavor. Let's go. Don't waste your time looking at something unpleasant."

Yvonne leaned on his chest and smiled. "You're the best." Then she said, "She's just a thief. Teach her a lesson and toss her out of Porton. We don't want any thievery hurting this land."

The guard said, "Yes, Ms. Chaucer."

Zack paused for a moment, but he did not turn back. Instead, he held Yvonne tighter and walked out of the place.

…

A kind stranger eventually found me and took me to hospital. After my wounds were treated, the doctor told me, "You're three months along now. Be careful. You're lucky your baby's fine this time, but your luck will run out."

I froze. My trembling hand slowly moved towards my still-flat stomach. I could not believe a life was growing inside me. Before I could even snap out of it, men in black barged into the ward and pulled me up, manhandling me.

"What are you doing? Let me go?"

That only earned me a heavy hit in return. Before my consciousness faded, they said coldly, "Mr. Landton's orders. This is a lesson."

When I woke up again, I was in an underground chamber, the air thick with the stench of metal and beasts. I had nothing but my undergarments on, and I was locked in a cold cage. Beyond the bars, figures stood in the dim light, their eyes lingering on me.

But the thing that scared me the most was the gigantic mastiff in the neighboring cage. It was growling and drooling.

"No! Let me go!"

I was severely allergic to dog fur, and breathing became hard. But now there was something far more terrifying to protect. The baby inside me.

I grabbed the bars desperately. Tears streamed down my face. "I'm allergic to dogs, and I'm pregnant! Please, spare me!"

A man with a headset crouched. He looked at me coldly. "It's useless pleading with us, Ms. Shaw. You're the one who sent those videos to Ms. Chaucer."

I shook my head profusely and defended myself, "I didn't! I don't even know what you're talking about!"

"Mr. Landton's orders. You don't know your place and made Ms. Chaucer cry. You will pay the price." He stood up and said cruelly, "You loved to share those videos, didn't you? Then these people will be enjoying the show too."

"I didn't do it! I want to see Zack!" I screamed in despair. With my trembling hands, I tried to find my phone, but it was nowhere to be found.

Someone tossed me an old phone. I grabbed it like it was my lifeline, and I quickly dialed. It was then, I got a video. With shivering hands, I tapped it open, and it was Yvonne leaning in Zack's arms, taking a selfie.

She chuckled. "That replacement is such an annoyance. She won't stop calling. How about we give her to Mr. West and his friends after tonight?"

The screen shook, and it was now showing Zack's cold profile. "Sure."

At the same time, the mastiff lunged at me. The burning agony and despair dragged me into a world of darkness.

Zack's phone refused to stop ringing. While Yvonne was in the bathroom, he picked it up. With resignation, he said, "Stop calling. I'll pick you up when you've learnt your lesson."

An unfamiliar voice said, "Hi, is this Ivanna Shaw's family? She forgot to take her MFM. You'll have to come to Mercy Hospital."

Another year had gone by. I was travelling through rural Toucany, Romagna, searching for inspiration, and had temporarily settled into an old stone house in the countryside. It was late at night, and the aging circuit ended up causing a fire, and the flames quickly spread from the workshop next door. When the thick smoke woke me up, choking and coughing, the fire had already blocked the exit.I covered my mouth and nose with a wet towel and desperately tried to search for other exits, but the lack of any hit me with hopelessness. Then a silhouette charged into the fire and ran into the house.Zack. He somehow managed to track me down every time. There were obvious burns across his arms and back, and his face was streaked with soot. He did not seem to notice any of it. He wrapped a drenched coat around me, pulled me tightly against his chest, and shielded my body with his own. Then he carried me to the second-floor window. Before I could react, he jumped. There was already an in

I knew nothing about the turmoil my disappearance had caused in Porton. By then, I had already settled in a quiet coastal town in Dilton. The skies were blue here, and the air smelled of freedom. It took me nearly three months to heal the wounds of the past. Though the memories of Zack still made my chest stuffy, it did not tear it apart like it used to. People probably only learned how to make peace with something and move forward after losing something precious, including themselves.Just because I had made peace did not mean I had forgotten anything, let alone forgive it. Zack's men at least had the conscience to pull the mastiff away right before I could get wounded. But the extreme shock, cold, humiliation, and the clear sense of pain from something falling within me told me my body was losing something. Warm liquid slid down the sides of my thigh, and it scared them. The people who had gathered to watch scattered almost immediately. None of them wanted to be around if someone

All the color drained from Yvonne's face. Even her lips turned white. She looked at him as if she had never seen this side of him before. The man who was gentle and did everything she wanted was being distant and firm with her.And he was doing it because of another woman. More specifically, because of the child that woman was carrying—the child he had never expected."You're taking responsibility?" she muttered, and tears slid down her cheeks. "What about me? We just… you proposed to me, and everyone knows that."Her tears softened Zack's heart, but it also frustrated him, and he was reminded of what I said to him. It was then he realized he never thought about losing or abandoning me.Confusion grasped his mind. He thought Yvonne was the one he loved. He thought he loved the bright, proud, innocent, and cheeky girl. The mischievous girl who had smiled at him beneath the sunlight and become the first love of his youth.Displeased by her family's arranged marriage for her, she sai

Explosions and gunfire thundered across the cinema screen. Intense gunfights and emotional dialogue screeched in the dark. Yvonne leaned against Zack, completely absorbed in the film. Every so often, she gasped or laughed softly.Zack could not even concentrate. He kept thinking about me, and that fact was making him uneasy. When an explosion scene came up, he was reminded of the blood he saw when I took that attack for him. His fingertips went cold, and he could remember how I looked at him when he was taking me in that mansion not too long ago.I had nothing but despair and sorrow in my eyes.An invisible hand squeezed his heart until he was suffocating, and his chest throbbed. He pretended to be calm and excused himself, then he went to the bathroom and gave orders to his underlings."Stop the lesson right now and take Ivanna home." After sending that, he fired off another one."Assemble Dr. Lawson's team, get all equipment, summon the MFM specialist, and go to the mansion as f

Zack froze, and his heart skipped a beat. Then his voice took a darker turn. "What do you mean, MFM? She's pregnant? Explain!"The doctor sounded stunned. "You're her family, aren't you? She's about six weeks pregnant. What exactly have you been doing? The first trimester is critical, and the fetus isn't stabilized yet. She needs rest. She's wounded and is emotionally turbulent. The fetus didn't look good during her checkup either. She nearly miscarried."Every word hit Zack like a sledgehammer. He nearly fainted, but he clenched the phone tightly until his knuckles were white. Then he remembered that one time he took me with force. He was reminded of my pale face and my silent tears. After that session, he took me into the bathroom for a shower. When he saw the bruises and wounds on my body, he felt uneasy and beat himself up a little. Then I tried to take some morning-after pills, but he tossed them into the bin.He promised, "If you get pregnant, carry it to term."At the time,
