Chapter 3 Pinned

Author: Nina Fortune
The moment I turned away, Zack grabbed my wrist in an iron grip and snatched my suitcase. He weighed it casually. "That's barely anything, Ivanna. This is an act, isn't it?"

He pushed me down on the couch and climbed on top, then he started tearing my clothes. "Even if you're trying to pull away, you shouldn't push too far."

"Let go, you bastard! Let go!" I screamed and thrashed and kicked, but he grabbed my wrists easily and held them over my head. He kissed me hard, as if it was a punishment. "You scream, but your body is reacting differently."

His lips moved to the side of my neck, leaving something wet and warm. "You melt right away. There's no way you can leave me, Ivanna. Open your eyes. You can't live without my body, my money, and everything I've given you. Not just anyone can spend 500 million on you like pocket change, get it?"

He held himself against me, and his breathing was heavy. "Are you throwing a tantrum because I haven't been giving it to you tonight? Can't get used to it? It's alright. I'll satisfy you. Let's have a baby. Then you'll stop these childish tantrums."

"No, Zack. Don't do it…" He ignored my pleas and struggle and did what he wanted.

Then the screeching wail of his phone tore through the thick air of the room. He pulled away and took the call. When he spoke, his voice was tender. "Yeah, stuck in traffic. I'll be right there."

He sorted himself up, picked up all five gift boxes, and strode away. He did not even look at me.

Five years ago, my family had gone into bankruptcy when he came to me. My mother had died from a heart attack, and my father took his own life in prison. It was the darkest time of my life.

He showed up and wiped my tears away. Then he pulled me into his embrace and said, "Don't cry. Date me. I'll help you, love you, and spoil you."

I thought he was the hope that tore through my darkness. I saw him as my salvation. In the end, I was nothing but a joke to him. Might as well. I had signed a five-year contract when he gave me the money, and it was expiring on this very day.

I wished him happiness and freedom.

On the way to the airport, I asked the driver to stop outside a jewellery store. The Diamond Star sat in my pocket, cold and heavy against me. Before I left, I wanted to sever the last tie binding me to my past. At the very least, I wanted to know whether this ring was as worthless as the feelings I had poured into the last five years.

Right after I took my ring out, a soft, sharp voice exploded behind me. "Diamond Star? That's mine! Why do you have it?"

I turned back and was met with a haughty Yvonne. She was in an exquisite dress and wore perfect makeup, a contrast to my disheveled look.

"This is mine…"

A slap interrupted me, and I saw stars. The taste of metal erupted in my mouth.

"Grab this thief! She stole my engagement ring! That's Diamond Star, and Zack designed it for me!"

"I didn't steal it! It's mine!" I covered my face and clenched the ring tightly, trying to salvage what was left of my dignity.

"Yours?" Yvonne chuckled and scanned my bleached clothes and shabby suitcase with disdain in her eyes. "The whole city knows this ring is a symbol of the promise Zack made to me! You think you're worthy of this?"

The guards stepped ahead and pulled my arm behind my back unceremoniously, then they pinned me onto the marble ground. My knees screamed in pain, and my suitcase toppled over. Old clothes scattered, and the crowd looked at me with scorn.

"She looks like a nice girl. I can't believe she's a thief."

"I bet she's jealous of Ms. Chaucer."

"She has no shame! She deserves this!"

"I didn't do it!" My voice was drowned out by the accusations.

At the same time, Zack walked in carrying an elegant box from one of the most exclusive dessert shops in the city. Inside was their signature cake. People queued for hours just for the chance to buy one, and even then, there was no guarantee they would get it.

Zack had once bought the same cake for me. He had waited in line for four hours.

Back then, I had been so touched that I nearly cried. Only now did I understand. He had not bought it because I liked it. He had bought it because she did.

Zack looked at Yvonne gently. "What happened, Eve?" Then he pretended to glance at me by chance. I was still pinned to the floor, exhausted and dishevelled, one cheek swollen from the slap. An imperceptible frown creased his forehead, and emotions stirred in his eyes for a moment.

"Zack!" Yvonne immediately leaned against him and pointed at me tearfully. "She stole the ring you gave me, and I caught her red-handed, but she denied everything! Do you know this girl?"

  • When the Stars Betrayed Us   Chapter 9 Forward

Another year had gone by. I was travelling through rural Toucany, Romagna, searching for inspiration, and had temporarily settled into an old stone house in the countryside. It was late at night, and the aging circuit ended up causing a fire, and the flames quickly spread from the workshop next door. When the thick smoke woke me up, choking and coughing, the fire had already blocked the exit.I covered my mouth and nose with a wet towel and desperately tried to search for other exits, but the lack of any hit me with hopelessness. Then a silhouette charged into the fire and ran into the house.Zack. He somehow managed to track me down every time. There were obvious burns across his arms and back, and his face was streaked with soot. He did not seem to notice any of it. He wrapped a drenched coat around me, pulled me tightly against his chest, and shielded my body with his own. Then he carried me to the second-floor window. Before I could react, he jumped. There was already an in

I knew nothing about the turmoil my disappearance had caused in Porton. By then, I had already settled in a quiet coastal town in Dilton. The skies were blue here, and the air smelled of freedom. It took me nearly three months to heal the wounds of the past. Though the memories of Zack still made my chest stuffy, it did not tear it apart like it used to. People probably only learned how to make peace with something and move forward after losing something precious, including themselves.Just because I had made peace did not mean I had forgotten anything, let alone forgive it. Zack's men at least had the conscience to pull the mastiff away right before I could get wounded. But the extreme shock, cold, humiliation, and the clear sense of pain from something falling within me told me my body was losing something. Warm liquid slid down the sides of my thigh, and it scared them. The people who had gathered to watch scattered almost immediately. None of them wanted to be around if someone

All the color drained from Yvonne's face. Even her lips turned white. She looked at him as if she had never seen this side of him before. The man who was gentle and did everything she wanted was being distant and firm with her.And he was doing it because of another woman. More specifically, because of the child that woman was carrying—the child he had never expected."You're taking responsibility?" she muttered, and tears slid down her cheeks. "What about me? We just… you proposed to me, and everyone knows that."Her tears softened Zack's heart, but it also frustrated him, and he was reminded of what I said to him. It was then he realized he never thought about losing or abandoning me.Confusion grasped his mind. He thought Yvonne was the one he loved. He thought he loved the bright, proud, innocent, and cheeky girl. The mischievous girl who had smiled at him beneath the sunlight and become the first love of his youth.Displeased by her family's arranged marriage for her, she sai

Explosions and gunfire thundered across the cinema screen. Intense gunfights and emotional dialogue screeched in the dark. Yvonne leaned against Zack, completely absorbed in the film. Every so often, she gasped or laughed softly.Zack could not even concentrate. He kept thinking about me, and that fact was making him uneasy. When an explosion scene came up, he was reminded of the blood he saw when I took that attack for him. His fingertips went cold, and he could remember how I looked at him when he was taking me in that mansion not too long ago.I had nothing but despair and sorrow in my eyes.An invisible hand squeezed his heart until he was suffocating, and his chest throbbed. He pretended to be calm and excused himself, then he went to the bathroom and gave orders to his underlings."Stop the lesson right now and take Ivanna home." After sending that, he fired off another one."Assemble Dr. Lawson's team, get all equipment, summon the MFM specialist, and go to the mansion as f

Zack froze, and his heart skipped a beat. Then his voice took a darker turn. "What do you mean, MFM? She's pregnant? Explain!"The doctor sounded stunned. "You're her family, aren't you? She's about six weeks pregnant. What exactly have you been doing? The first trimester is critical, and the fetus isn't stabilized yet. She needs rest. She's wounded and is emotionally turbulent. The fetus didn't look good during her checkup either. She nearly miscarried."Every word hit Zack like a sledgehammer. He nearly fainted, but he clenched the phone tightly until his knuckles were white. Then he remembered that one time he took me with force. He was reminded of my pale face and my silent tears. After that session, he took me into the bathroom for a shower. When he saw the bruises and wounds on my body, he felt uneasy and beat himself up a little. Then I tried to take some morning-after pills, but he tossed them into the bin.He promised, "If you get pregnant, carry it to term."At the time,

Time slowed to a stop, and all eyes were on him. I looked at him, the man who did what he wanted with me the night before, and a sliver of hope flared in my heart, though it was laughable.Impatiently, Zack said, "I don't know her. She's a thief." He held Yvonne tightly and moved his eyes away. Then he started comforting her quietly, "Did she scare you? It's not worth it. I got your cake, and it's your favorite flavor. Let's go. Don't waste your time looking at something unpleasant."Yvonne leaned on his chest and smiled. "You're the best." Then she said, "She's just a thief. Teach her a lesson and toss her out of Porton. We don't want any thievery hurting this land."The guard said, "Yes, Ms. Chaucer."Zack paused for a moment, but he did not turn back. Instead, he held Yvonne tighter and walked out of the place.…A kind stranger eventually found me and took me to hospital. After my wounds were treated, the doctor told me, "You're three months along now. Be careful. You're luck
