Chapter 1 She Looks Like Her

Author: Nina Fortune
My whole body went cold, and then thunderous laughter came from inside. "Eve, remember what you told him back then? You said it was a test. You were afraid Zack's feelings wouldn't last, and that his addiction might make him hurt you someday. And he actually treated your words like a divine command!"

Another person added, "Exactly. Eve never fights for anything, but Zack spent the last five years trying every possible method to control himself. And even then, he only kept one little bird by his side—the one who happened to look like you. If that isn't devotion, what is?"

"Didn't you see the videos he sent to the group? He tortured that bird every single time, and even when she passed out, she couldn't get away from his lust."

"He did everything to prove he's normal and can love you for life. You have to admit, that's pretty convincing."

I knew these people. I used to see them at the mall, but Zack never introduced them to me. He only brought them up when he came back home to torture me in 100 different positions, citing that they were his best friends.

Zack only loved me when night fell, but when it was daytime, he pretended he did not know me, even when we ran into each other. I used to believe that he only did it to protect me, but the truth made it sound like a joke.

And these people talked about those videos. That made me uneasy. I wondered if they were sex videos. Zack told me it was just for fun and something only the two of us knew. So what exactly had he shown them?

I stumbled backwards and covered my mouth with one hand. Hot tears slid over my fingers.

Through the crack in the door, I saw the girl, Yvonne Chaucer, putting her pen down, and she smiled.

"Kiss me, Zack."

My breathing stopped. Zack only paused for a moment, then he kissed her, still half-kneeling on the ground. The crowd whooped.

"Date him! Date him!"

Everyone's faces were filled with sweet smiles. I stood outside like a filthy secret, unable to breathe as I watched them celebrate. The kiss lasted long and hard. Zack's arm was around Yvonne's back, and he brought her to the bed in the room.

Yvonne moaned, and his kiss moved down to her neck. His hand moved downward too.

Someone finally muttered awkwardly, "Guys… this is still a monastery."

Another snickered. "You buzzkill! Zack built this whole place for Ms. Chaucer. This is his turf! And he knows what he's doing. He's not that gentle when it comes to sex. Did you forget those videos?"

I leaned against the door, my nails sinking into my flesh, yet I felt no pain. My heart was already screaming out in agony so much I could not breathe.

This answered every question I had. There was no love at first sight. He spent five hundred million buying me five years ago because I looked like Yvonne. The name in his heart and the name he called out whenever we were going at it belonged to this woman, his childhood friend who ran away from their wedding.

I let my nails claw at my face until they drew blood, but I did not let go. I cursed myself for my stupidity. I cursed myself for plunging too deeply into the role Zack gave me while he used me.

I could not stand the conversation any longer, so I turned to run, but I staggered and toppled the porcelain pot in the corridor.

"Who's there?"

I did not turn back, and I ran as fast as my legs could take me. It was a long descent down the mountain, and every step nearly killed me.

I lost my path within the downpour, and a long, long time later, Zack's car zoomed past me. Sludge splashed all over me, and I crumpled to the ground. Crying, I signed the termination contract in my inbox.

Another year had gone by. I was travelling through rural Toucany, Romagna, searching for inspiration, and had temporarily settled into an old stone house in the countryside. It was late at night, and the aging circuit ended up causing a fire, and the flames quickly spread from the workshop next door. When the thick smoke woke me up, choking and coughing, the fire had already blocked the exit.I covered my mouth and nose with a wet towel and desperately tried to search for other exits, but the lack of any hit me with hopelessness. Then a silhouette charged into the fire and ran into the house.Zack. He somehow managed to track me down every time. There were obvious burns across his arms and back, and his face was streaked with soot. He did not seem to notice any of it. He wrapped a drenched coat around me, pulled me tightly against his chest, and shielded my body with his own. Then he carried me to the second-floor window. Before I could react, he jumped. There was already an in

I knew nothing about the turmoil my disappearance had caused in Porton. By then, I had already settled in a quiet coastal town in Dilton. The skies were blue here, and the air smelled of freedom. It took me nearly three months to heal the wounds of the past. Though the memories of Zack still made my chest stuffy, it did not tear it apart like it used to. People probably only learned how to make peace with something and move forward after losing something precious, including themselves.Just because I had made peace did not mean I had forgotten anything, let alone forgive it. Zack's men at least had the conscience to pull the mastiff away right before I could get wounded. But the extreme shock, cold, humiliation, and the clear sense of pain from something falling within me told me my body was losing something. Warm liquid slid down the sides of my thigh, and it scared them. The people who had gathered to watch scattered almost immediately. None of them wanted to be around if someone

All the color drained from Yvonne's face. Even her lips turned white. She looked at him as if she had never seen this side of him before. The man who was gentle and did everything she wanted was being distant and firm with her.And he was doing it because of another woman. More specifically, because of the child that woman was carrying—the child he had never expected."You're taking responsibility?" she muttered, and tears slid down her cheeks. "What about me? We just… you proposed to me, and everyone knows that."Her tears softened Zack's heart, but it also frustrated him, and he was reminded of what I said to him. It was then he realized he never thought about losing or abandoning me.Confusion grasped his mind. He thought Yvonne was the one he loved. He thought he loved the bright, proud, innocent, and cheeky girl. The mischievous girl who had smiled at him beneath the sunlight and become the first love of his youth.Displeased by her family's arranged marriage for her, she sai

Explosions and gunfire thundered across the cinema screen. Intense gunfights and emotional dialogue screeched in the dark. Yvonne leaned against Zack, completely absorbed in the film. Every so often, she gasped or laughed softly.Zack could not even concentrate. He kept thinking about me, and that fact was making him uneasy. When an explosion scene came up, he was reminded of the blood he saw when I took that attack for him. His fingertips went cold, and he could remember how I looked at him when he was taking me in that mansion not too long ago.I had nothing but despair and sorrow in my eyes.An invisible hand squeezed his heart until he was suffocating, and his chest throbbed. He pretended to be calm and excused himself, then he went to the bathroom and gave orders to his underlings."Stop the lesson right now and take Ivanna home." After sending that, he fired off another one."Assemble Dr. Lawson's team, get all equipment, summon the MFM specialist, and go to the mansion as f

Zack froze, and his heart skipped a beat. Then his voice took a darker turn. "What do you mean, MFM? She's pregnant? Explain!"The doctor sounded stunned. "You're her family, aren't you? She's about six weeks pregnant. What exactly have you been doing? The first trimester is critical, and the fetus isn't stabilized yet. She needs rest. She's wounded and is emotionally turbulent. The fetus didn't look good during her checkup either. She nearly miscarried."Every word hit Zack like a sledgehammer. He nearly fainted, but he clenched the phone tightly until his knuckles were white. Then he remembered that one time he took me with force. He was reminded of my pale face and my silent tears. After that session, he took me into the bathroom for a shower. When he saw the bruises and wounds on my body, he felt uneasy and beat himself up a little. Then I tried to take some morning-after pills, but he tossed them into the bin.He promised, "If you get pregnant, carry it to term."At the time,

  • When the Stars Betrayed Us   Chapter 4 A Lesson

Time slowed to a stop, and all eyes were on him. I looked at him, the man who did what he wanted with me the night before, and a sliver of hope flared in my heart, though it was laughable.Impatiently, Zack said, "I don't know her. She's a thief." He held Yvonne tightly and moved his eyes away. Then he started comforting her quietly, "Did she scare you? It's not worth it. I got your cake, and it's your favorite flavor. Let's go. Don't waste your time looking at something unpleasant."Yvonne leaned on his chest and smiled. "You're the best." Then she said, "She's just a thief. Teach her a lesson and toss her out of Porton. We don't want any thievery hurting this land."The guard said, "Yes, Ms. Chaucer."Zack paused for a moment, but he did not turn back. Instead, he held Yvonne tighter and walked out of the place.…A kind stranger eventually found me and took me to hospital. After my wounds were treated, the doctor told me, "You're three months along now. Be careful. You're luck
