Chapter 8

Author: Doofus
After dinner, Finn turned down Sue's offer to give him a ride.

He headed home alone, smiling wryly as he still had 500 grand even after paying tuition fees, while gaining Sue's support.

Whether it was in his past life or in the current one, his own family resented him so much and wanted him gone, while a stranger like Sue was somehow kind to him.

Even if it was an insignificant gesture to her, Finn felt endless warmth from it.

Ring!

That was when his phone rang, yanking him out of his thoughts.

"Hello, Finn. Do you feel better now?"

It was the counselor, Lilian Thule.

Finn once again felt another burst of warmth, as she always showed concern and helped him in secret, knowing that he was financially troubled.

Smiling earnestly, he replied, "You don't have to worry about me, Ms. Thule. I'm fine."

"That's good," Lilian chuckled. "Anyway, I've found you a job at the college store. You can work part-time outside of work—what do you think?"

"Of course!"

Finn agreed to it readily, since he needed another job after resigning from dishwashing.

He also needed money for his medical fees and other things, so he hurried to the store once he asked for other details.

It wasn't tough work—mostly just cashiering and odd jobs, and Lilian was basically securing a vacancy for him after someone else resigned.

But after just a few peaceful days, Finn felt his peaceful life disturbed by a familiar laugh. "Oh, if it isn't Finn! What are you doing here, selling hot dogs?"

A rowdy bunch with Joe at the center soon arrived, with Joe smiling in disdain, wearing designer brands from head to toe.

Finn expressionlessly handed a customer a hot dog before finally turning to Joe, asking flatly, "How can I help you?"

He really didn't have time for the Lawsons' favorite child.

"Watch how you speak to Joe!" Eli bellowed, streaking forward and grabbing Finn by the collar. "You should be honored he's talking to you, when all a loser like you deserves is selling hot dogs at a cheap stall like this one!"

That was when Joe cleared his throat and dramatically fanned away the steam billowing in front of him. "Come on, Eli. Aren't you worried that you'll get your hands dirty? Heck, I'm worried about the air quality just by standing near peasants like him."

Eli released Finn's collar immediately and spat in disgust while nodding at Joe. "Yes, you're right! Having him show up around her is really dirt in your eye, Joe!"

Finn's gaze darkened, his knuckles clenching under his sleeves.

He just wanted to do his best and live, but Joe kept humiliating and framing him.

Even then, everyone always took Joe's side—all he had to do was speak, and Finn would take the blame.

He was frustrated, just as he couldn't understand.

He might be the Lawsons' real son, but he never thought about taking anything—all he wanted was to have a family and the affection he had yearned for nineteen years.

That was when Joe chuckled coolly as he advanced. "How dare you look at me like that?"

With just a wave of his hand, a large gang of boys swarmed the stall, and Joe smirked in amusement. "One hot dog for every one of my buddies."

Eli promptly chimed in, "See?! Joe is so kind, giving you money seeing that you're working a part-time job! Show some gratitude, peasant!"

Finn could feel his rage bursting with Eli's haughty tone as he ordered him around, but he still held back.

Finn was quickly convinced that Ruby spoke a lot of sense and created an official Great Gate Instagram account. After parting ways with Ruby, he headed to the cafeteria. There were plenty of people there, and it wasn't easy to find an empty seat. However, he had barely started eating when a shrill voice rang behind him. "Hey, if it isn't Finn Lawson, the real son of the Lawsons!"The rowdy cafeteria abruptly turned silent as everyone turned toward the student who spoke out loud—even the ones waiting in line. However, the student continued with jealousy flashing in his eyes. "Just think about it. He couldn't find his parents for so long but suddenly found them… He must have seen how well off Joe was and wanted money!"The others sitting beside him quickly agreed. "That's right! How thick-skinned! How unseemly!""Kid has no principles. He's always demanding for more money—that's why the family resents him too!"Hearing that, the others began to clamor."Yeah. I heard the Lawso

Finn had been playing Great Gate ever since his team made it, and he even sent Yorick a link to the app.As it was not published yet, it was only available in offline mode.Yorick had stopped playing his favorite game since he smashed his mouse and was busy playing Great Gate since.Today, in philosophy class, in which everyone was left dozing off, he was playing it too."Tch!"He clicked his tongue as he lowered his phone, staring at the words 'Game Over' on the screen and scratching his head repeatedly, leaving his hair a mess."Your game's so hard!" he complained. "I can't even get past the second level!"And yet, he tapped on the replay button anyway, groaning as he did, "Ugh, I can do this! It's so addicting that I see it when I close my eyes!"Hearing him, Ruby Locke—the class princess—turned toward them as she was about to doze off from the class too."What game are you playing? Is it really that hard?" she asked, her face lighting up with interest. "Let me try it and s

Yvie was sulking as she returned home. The rest of the Lawsons had been waiting the whole night, and they quickly gathered in the living room when they saw her return.Seeing that look on Yvie's face, Vera promptly confirmed her own suspicions about Finn, and he had to bully Yvie on top of that! She promptly planted herself beside Yvie, putting an arm around her shoulder and rocking her. "Don't get so upset, sis!" she said, and then snarled through gritted teeth, "I knew Finn was a rotten apple all along. Now that you've caught him red-handed, he'll definitely do his worst to get back at us! How dare he try to slander me? I'll show him!""Wait, what?" Yvie blurted in surprise."Oh, Yvie," Joe chimed in just then, sitting on the armrest with a vague smile. "It was dangerous to talk to him alone. Who knows what he'll do…"Naturally, he wasn't at all worried like the rest of the family, and was absolutely pleased that they were going after Finn. With things carrying on like this,

Even so, Finn had always insisted on cooking for Yvie, and she suddenly wondered how long it had been since he cooked for her. That was when she remembered—after they made him sign that disownment agreement, and after which he never came home since.Yvie suddenly couldn't help but wonder if she was prejudiced against Finn the whole time, but that was when the food arrived. She ate after Finn had asked her to, and then thought about it before asking, "So Vera told me she bumped into you at Kite Tower, where you met a man called Malcolm Lock? What's that about?"Finn was eating too, and he paused. "So that's why you called me?"Yvie nodded, chagrined as she had never invited Finn anywhere like this before.Still, Finn shrugged and took out his phone, holding it in front of Yvie as he tapped on the Great Gate app. "This is a mobile game I'm investing in, and I'm discussing a viral marketing plan with Mr. Lock."As he pocketed his phone, he finished, "I guess you can call it a start

After finishing her work despite looking distracted, Vera quickly sent her staff away before rushing home.Zoe coincidentally finished work and got home as well, so Vera quickly stopped her and told her everything.Zoe frowned in turn. "Let's just calm down for now. We can discuss it with the rest of the family at dinner."Henry's bid for that major project was still ongoing since they managed to keep Joe's arrest under wraps. But if Finn were to publicize it, then Vera would lose her lead role, and Henry would lose his bid, while Zoe's own company might lose market value as well!-Once the sisters told the rest of the family during dinner, things tensed up immediately.Henry even slammed his fork on the table, his temple veins surfacing as he bellowed, "That rotten brat!"He could strangle Finn right then—was he so dead set on destroying their family? Was there even a sliver of that brat which measured up to Joe?!Ruth put down her fork too and patted Henry's arm to calm him

On top of that, it reinforced the public image that Vera was just a pretty face slash nepobaby, as her hopes to turn the tide of long-standing criticism against her fell flat.Instead, her reputation took a nosedive and her fanbase dwindled, with some diehard fans even becoming her worst detractors.Even as Finn wondered if he should tell Vera, she finished speaking with the press. After her staff escorted the press members away, she immediately spotted Finn standing nearby, her tactful smile immediately melting into disgust. Her tone was just as harsh as she snapped, "Finn! You're really persistent, aren't you? It's like there's just no getting rid of you! What is it now? Already using up all your money and you're now here to stalk me? How did you even find out where I am?!"I'm warning you—quit bothering me, and don't think you're getting anything from me! I'm not as kind as Joe, and I'll make you pay if you mess with me!"Finn glared at her in turn, his heart cold while also w
