Following the trail of smoke, I finally saw him.

He sat in silence, dressed in a simple cotton shirt that had long since lost its original color and a pair of faded trousers held together by careful stitches. The tropical sun had weathered both the fabric and the man wearing it, but neither had broken. His posture remained straight, his expression unreadable, and his presence alone was enough to command respect.

Without looking at me, he spoke in a firm voice.

“I knew you would eventually come.”

Fear washed over me.

I quickly grabbed a stick from the ground and pointed it at him.

“Who are you? And how did you get here?”

Before I could react, he casually knocked the stick out of my hand with a single swing.

He looked at me with disappointment.

“How can a person be this weak… and this unaware? If not a fool.”

He sighed before continuing.

“Since the day you arrived on this island, you’ve been watched.”

My eyes widened.

“I’ve been watching you for the past three months, and you’re only just realizing it.”

He chuckled.

“I know you visit the church once every week. Every Wednesday, you go fishing. And not once have you missed writing ‘SOS’ on the beach, hoping someone will magically appear from the sky to rescue you.”

His smile faded.

“I doubt anyone is coming. I’ve been here for ten years, and until today, I had never seen another living soul.”

I was speechless.

How could this man know everything about me when I hadn’t even known he existed?

He studied me for a moment before speaking again.

“You’re tougher than I expected. Not many people could survive three months alone on this island.”

His eyes narrowed.

“I also know you’re not a spy…”

He paused.

“Or are you?”

His piercing gaze seemed to look straight into my soul.

I immediately shook my head.

“N-not at all, sir.”

He nodded toward the log beside him.

“Come. Sit.”

Still trembling, I slowly sat down.

“What if I teach you how to fight?” he asked casually while turning the fish roasting over the fire.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“No, sir… I’m fine the way I am. I’ve always been.”

He laughed softly.

“My mistake. I haven’t introduced myself.”

He extended his hand.

“My name is Zeno Vitale, though most people simply call me The Old Man.”

He continued roasting the fish and corn before asking,

“And what’s your name? Seeing as we’re the only two humans left on this island, I think we might as well get along.”

“My name is Tiffany Smith.”

He nodded thoughtfully.

“Tiffany Smith…”

He repeated my name as though testing its weight.

“That sounds like the name of a dignified young lady.”

He leaned back.

“About those fighting skills…”

“You should learn.”

“As you can see, I’m getting old. My fists aren’t as strong as they used to be. If danger comes, I may not be able to protect either of us.”

He pointed toward the forest.

“You’re young. Agile. You should know how to defend yourself.”

He paused.

“Did you really think surviving one hurricane meant this island had nothing else to fear?”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“There are wild boars…”

“…venomous creatures…”

“…and perhaps even people far more dangerous than either.”

Then he smirked.

“The mere fact that I’m here should tell you this island is far more dangerous than you realize.”

A strange smile appeared on his face, though it never reached his eyes.

“I know what betrayal looks like.”

I frowned.

“Don’t look so surprised,” he said quietly.

“It was written all over your face.”

His expression darkened.

“I was betrayed too.”

“By the person I trusted most.”

For a brief moment, silence settled between us.

Then he looked at me again.

“I suppose that makes us a team.”

I lowered my head.

What did I have left to lose?

Nothing.

If I truly wanted to survive… if I ever wanted to leave this island…

I needed to become stronger.

I lifted my head and met his gaze.

“I want to learn.”

A faint smile crossed his face.

“Good girl.”

“Your training begins tomorrow.”

Tomorrow?

My eyes widened.

What on earth did he mean by that?

And why did I suddenly have a feeling my life was about to become much harder?

Then Zeno faced me and said, “You know, a few weeks ago, I told you that I would find a way for you to leave this island. Enzo is here to help you. It won’t be easy, but I trust his capabilities.” He said this while tapping Enzo on the shoulder.Enzo looked shocked.“Old man, I thought you invited me so I could help you out of this miserable place. Don’t tell me you want to continue living all by yourself. It will be very risky, and the fact that I came here means the Serpents”—the code name for their enemies—“will start to suspect something and may discover that you are here. This place is no longer safe,”** Enzo rambled.“Old man, I know we’ve discussed this before, but still, what Enzo said is right. This place is no longer safe. You would be better off with us than staying here. We can actually see you and protect you,” I added. But the old man remained adamant. He said in a firm voice, “Thanks for the concern, but I am staying here, and that’s final.”Silence descended over the r

“Are you guys coming in, or do you want to be roasted by this scorching sun?” Zeno’s voice rang out as he was already making his way to his place. We both followed him obediently, our eyes filled with hundreds of questions.Enzo kept dusting his pants and waving his hand to swat away any insects that came near his face. When we got to Zeno’s place, he tapped both sides of the wooden bench he was sitting on, gesturing for us to sit. He then handed us some roasted yam and fish served with palm oil.In between bites, Enzo broke the silence.“L’Umbra è in declino.”(The Umbra is in decline.)The Umbra was the secret name for the Eclipse Syndicate, usually used by its members.Zeno reached for the stick beside him and smacked Enzo lightly on the mouth.“Even food can’t shut your running mouth. I wonder how you manage to keep secrets with that loose mouth of yours.”I burst into laughter and almost choked on my food. Enzo could only scratch his head awkwardly.“Moreover, Tiffany is Blood,”

I became restless and started pacing back and forth.“Zeno, please let me borrow your laptop,” I said.Zeno sighed.“You… I almost forgot that the faster you learn, the faster you forget.”He shook his head.“What did I teach you about your facial expressions and actions? I’ve always told you to remain calm, no matter the situation you’re facing.”He snorted.“Besides, I don’t think it’s wise for you to check it now. Why don’t you wait until you’ve left Tempest Isle?”He waved his hand dismissively.“Enough talking. Go back to training. From today onward, you’ll be training by yourself.”He paused before continuing.“I’ll try to get in touch with one of my loyalists to get you off this island.”I panicked.“I thought you said it would be dangerous if you were exposed.”Zeno smiled faintly.“But I can’t stay hidden forever. Besides, you’re the only one leaving. I’m already old. I just want to live the rest of my life in peace before I die. I can’t let you remain trapped here with me. Y

He smiled.“Not yet. But I can’t stay in hiding forever, and once I’m exposed, I’ll be in great danger. Every soldier must one day prepare a successor.”I scoffed.“And you think I’m that successor?”He smiled.“Tiffany, you underestimate yourself. I know you’re more than capable.”Then he slipped his hand into the worn leather wallet and carefully pulled out a black obsidian ring.He placed it gently in my palm.“Keep this with you at all times,” he said.I frowned.“But I told you I don’t want to lead the Eclipse Syndicate.”A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.“And I’m not asking you to.”He closed my fingers around the ring.“This ring is older than the Syndicate itself. It was first worn by my wife, Valentina. After her death, it became mine. It was meant for our children… but fate denied us that blessing.”He stared at the black stone for a moment.“To the underworld, this is not just a ring. It is a seal of authority. Every major organization knows it. They may not k

Facing me, he asked, “So, how did you end up here?”I looked at him and replied, “What if I told you I don’t know either? Would you believe me? The last thing I remember was catching my father and his mistress together just after my mother died.”He scoffed.“It seems you’ve had it even rougher than I did, especially for a naïve young lady like you.”He paused for a moment before continuing.“I’ve been thinking… how about joining the Eclipse Syndicate? Many elites and politicians are part of the organization, so there’s nothing to be afraid of. I want you to take my place as its leader. I know you’re more than capable. You see, I’ve been worried about you. How do you intend to survive if you ever leave this island? Surely you don’t plan on returning to your family. I’m certain that’s the last place you’d want to go.”I sighed.“Honestly, I don’t know what I want to do after leaving this place. But I don’t think I’m interested in joining the Eclipse Syndicate or taking your position.”

  • Where the Tide Returned    Chapter 5- Training 2

“There is still a lot you need to learn… and unlearn,” the old man sighed. For the rest of the afternoon, he taught me everything from Linux to Python to JavaScript. The lessons seemed endless. At first, every word sounded like Greek to me, but I forced myself to understand. Giving up had stopped being an option long ago. As dusk settled over the island, I thought the day’s training was finally over. I was wrong. The Old Man began another lesson—this time, about controlling my expressions. “Your eyes speak before your mouth does,” he said. “Learn to silence them.” “No matter what the situation is, even if a gun is pointed at your head, remain calm and composed.” “Control your breathing.” “Observe people before you respond.” Then he looked directly into my eyes. “And never let people know what you fear, what you love, or what you’re thinking. The moment they can read your face…” “…they’ve already won.” By the end of the day’s training, I felt like a walking co
