I scoff, “I’m sure that’s not true. I barely know the man. Hell, I’ve been calling him Jekyll in my head.”

He turns his confused eyes toward mine, “Jekyll?”

“Because he was nice and then mea—” I muffle my screams by leaning forward to bite his arm as he pops my shoulder back into place.

His eyes start to glow as he looks down at where my mouth is on him and I blush, jerking away. “Sorry, I figured screaming would have the opposite effect.”

“I’ll never stop you from putting your mouth on me, little flower. But this might not be the best place.” His voice takes on a gruff quality that has my toes curling, but before I can blush or turn away from him, I’m tucked within large and strong arms.

They lift me into the air, and I turned, looking up at Kai. It’s going to give a girl a complex if he keeps carrying me places, but for now I’ll allow it. His eyes have darkened to a deep red, the veins in his arms and face blackening, and the blood seems to burn faster through him.

The wind carries a strange scent, long before the sound of traveling horses reaches us. Ivy and vines grow along every gap, locking us in and the approaching party out.“He’s coming,” my father groans, glancing at Stacia, Brax’s mom.“Well of course he is, there was just an explosion of magic in his woods,” She rolls her eyes, turning away from him. “Quickly, Kai. Lay her down in your car before he gets here.”“Talon?” Brax asks, confusion ringing through his voice. I can’t say I’m surprised, I also don’t understand why the sound of horses says my brother is getting closer, but at this point in our lives, nothing would surprise me.I follow Stacia’s directions, laying my Pixie down across the back seat of the car. I gesture toward it with a

The forest falls eerily silent as Lena crumples into Kai’s arms. I saw that look she gave him, saw how it broke him, and know there’s nothing we can do about it right now. But we will be lucky if our mate doesn’t hate us. I shake off the thought, focusing instead on what I can fix.The wolves around us are all wide-eyed, their bodies tense as they pace around the clearing, their eyes never quite leaving the woman in their princes arms. The younger wolves all look moments from bolting, and I can’t say I blame them. They shouldn’t have been out on a patrol yet.I step toward the group, leaving Kai to tend to our mate. I raise my hands, trying to get them all to focus. “Okay, I need everyone to just breathe.”“Breathe? Breathe?” Kai’s father, Darian scowls at me. “She could have killed us.”

I can feel her fear, feel her spiraling as the magic uses her how it wishes. I should have caught it sooner, should have felt how wrong her magic was, but I was too excited to see my pack again. I promised her I would stay by her side, and in one of her weakest moments, I failed.“Back off,” I shout, pushing myself up from the pile of well meaning wolves. Two more are advancing toward her, their hackles raised as they try to flank her. Their teeth glimmer as they catch the light, but it’s no use. Vines lash out, yanking a snarling wolf to the ground, bound tight but otherwise alive. The other barely escapes, snapping at the earth as he backs away.“Stop,” I plead, trying to push my way toward her. But just as she feels she’s protecting me, so does my pack. “She’s not— Pixie!”A younger wolf tackles me to the ground, standing guard over me as my mate sta

My mates climb out of the car slowly, keeping their hands visible and movements deliberate. Kai reaches a hand in, stilling as the wolves around him growl a warning, but I ignore it as I place my hand in his. He pulls me gently from the car, giving me something to lean on, though I’m not sure I need it anymore. My healing magic has done it’s job, healing the aches and pains from my body, but something still feels off. My magic buzzes at my fingertips, dancing just under my skin as if supercharged. Like the wires inside of my body are short-circuiting.It’s as if the magic from the border hadn’t just faded, but settled inside of me, pressing against every cell in my body. My instincts are amplified, my senses overloaded, and my pulse roars in my ears. Everything in me is telling me to protect my mates, to get us to safety. But I can’t move, my feet rooted to the ground as my magic tried and fails to center

I’m getting kind of tired of sitting in a car, though I guess it beats the cage. Brax decided to take a turn driving, sandwiching me once again between two mates. Why we can’t spread out in the car when they’re all mountains, I’ll never know. Something about protecting me from all angles. But our tank still doesn’t have windows, and we’re in the middle of a forest that only speaks to me, so I’m not quite sure how much protection they plan on being. But for now I’ll play their weird alpha male games. For now.The farther north we get, the older the forest seems. Now, it forms full sentences, talking to me like an elder would a child. Regaling me with stories of it’s youth and the beings it’s had walk through it’s mighty trunks. After the third time trying to talk to me, my mates got the hint that I wasn’t alone in my head. With a muttered, “she’s fine, the forest just likes her,” from Kai, they left me to it.Careful, wild one. Danger lurks ahead, and it will hurt.I bolt upright, my h

We stop for camp one last time, deciding it’s better to mentally prepare to meet the crazed wolf king than to go in tired and grouchy. A part of me is still worried that he won’t see Kai as the little brother that went missing, but a hindrance to this Fae treaty he is trying to get signed.I couldn’t cut it as Fae royalty, there’s no way I’ll cut it as Wolf royalty if I kill the current king and force Kai to take over. Would he even be allowed to take over as a half-vampire?I shake my head, watching as the fire light dances along the tall pine trees, casting eerie shadows around us. I’m not worried, the forest is calm and watching out for us, but it doesn’t mean we should let our guard down when we’re so close to potential freedom.Where will we go next if Talon won’t guard us like Kai hopes? Faerie is out, even if they wanted me there, Kai would be killed on principal, my mate or not. There’s a whole wide world out there that we could hide in, create our own little homestead to live
