Chapter 395

Author: Summer Blossom
"I suggest you come clean. Since you two were only tailing and reporting it to someone else without causing any physical harm, turning yourselves in could reduce your sentence," the police officer advised.

The silver handcuffs clinked with each nervous movement. Cornered, with no room to lie, the two men spilled everything. They revealed who hired them, how much they were paid, their daily tasks, and even the documents they exchanged.

Another officer took notes throughout the process and concluded that this was the work of a controlling psychopath, someone who wanted to monitor their target's every move.

"Ms. Smith, what's your relationship with Edward Fowler?" the police officer asked Macie.

"He's my ex-husband. We just finalized our divorce last week," Macie responded flatly.

Suddenly, it all made sense to the police officers. It was a messy breakup. The ex-husband wasn't willing to let go, so he resorted to obsessive surveillance. It was no wonder she divorced him.

"Edward had previously attacked a man who got too close to me. Then, he followed me to a restaurant and caused a scene at my workplace. Recently, he's only stayed away because his family has been keeping him in check," Macie explained."Now that you're divorced, any malicious actions he takes against you are no longer a family matter. They're crimes," the police officer said. "If anything like this happens again, please don't hesitate to call us."Macie sighed internally. Naturally, she had reported the previous incidents. However, the Fowler family held so much power in Williamford, and with Yosef involved, how could Edward ever truly face any consequences?Nevertheless, she had had enough of this. Even after leaving him, she couldn't escape his grasp.Yosef might have had someone monitoring Edward, restricting his movements, but that didn't stop the latter from hiring his own men to watch her every move. It felt like there was always this dark and filthy shadow clinging to her wh

The afternoon slipped by, and soon it was time for Macie to leave work. She clocked out on time but didn't take the subway. Since she had already reported the situation to the cops, they had arranged for plainclothes officers to assist her.Noticing that their target had changed her mode of transportation, two men near the subway entrance returned to their black sedan and followed her from a safe distance. Macie kept her headphones on and stayed in touch with the police officers. After walking for a while, the officers spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle."Walk into Riverside Boulevard next, Ms. Smith. Don't worry. Our team will be there to ensure you're safe," the police officer's voice came through her headphones."They're not trying to hurt me," Macie whispered. "They're just tailing me. I can cooperate and lure them out." The police chose to surround them rather than confront them. As soon as she turned onto Riverside Boulevard—a quiet side road with minimal traffic—the men i

After hanging up on the call, Hank said, "The project's been secured. The two companies will be developing it together."After hearing that, Adrian narrowed his eyes. He tried to wrap his head around his earlier conversation with Nathan. He wondered why Edward was so furious if the collaboration had been a success. Perhaps Nathan was just feeding him nonsense. The more he thought about it, the more he leaned toward the suspicion that Nathan had lied to him. He sneered at that thought. Even an assistant seemed to think he could play him for a fool. The humiliation was almost unbearable. As their car merged into the flow of traffic on the main road, a phone silently took several pictures of their car from behind a tree on the roadside and sent them off. …Nathan had already finished his investigation in the afternoon. He laid the complete report on Edward's desk. It was confirmed that Hank was involved with Bennett, and they had lunch with Adrian. Hank had been laughing and chattin

Alice read Sean's message. She'd already suspected that Edward had done as much, and now that Sean had brought it up, it was practically confirmed. She reached out to Macie, who was checking her phone during lunch break. Macie pursed her lips when she read Alice's message. Even though she had her doubts after their encounter with the luxury boutique manager at the café, Alice's confident tone prompted her to ask for an explanation.Alice came clean and told Macie about the bag. "I swear, I didn't find out until I got home. I thought it was my brother's doing, but he said it wasn't him. So, the only other person it could be was Edward."He came to Hart Group this morning for a meeting, and when Sean asked him about it, he didn't deny it."Macie stared at her phone, recalling how she had won the "grand prize" without spending a single cent, and how the boutique manager had personally delivered it to her, fawning over her and giving her their business card. However, there was no such

The person Edward had tasked to tail Macie hadn't seen Macie and Sean meet outside of work, so the only place they could have met was at the company. Brightech Studios might be a small firm, but it had a solid reputation in software development. If Sean had collaborated with them, it would all make sense. As Edward put two and two together, his informant's response confirmed his worst fears and ignited his fury all over again. Sean had been to Brightech Studios twice, and both times, he had been tangled up with Macie. The first time, he openly flirted with her in front of all the employees there. The second time, he personally delivered a gift to her in the design department, making his interest in Macie painfully obvious to the whole team."Why didn't you tell me something this important sooner?" Edward demanded, barely holding back his anger."But you didn't ask me about it, Mr. Fowler," the person responded. "At first, you asked about Ms. Smith and her relationship with Mr. At

Edward, irritated by Nathan's chatter, looked up and snapped, "I got it." Reluctantly, he took a few bites of the oatmeal and swallowed his medication. Nathan then left with the signed documents.Silence settled back over Edward's office, but the brief distraction had shattered his focus. He leaned back in his chair, and his mind drifted once more to that morning's events. Jealousy, anger, frustration, and indignation twisted together in his chest, making it hard for him to breathe. He called the lawyer he had contacted earlier, telling them to prepare to file a lawsuit against Sean and Xavier. He wanted the trial to happen as soon as possible, with all the evidence presented so that they couldn't deny it, no matter how hard they tried.Edward felt a surge of anger as he recalled how he had been blindsided that morning. He thought that Sean was a snake to sign the contract before smugly flaunting the cufflinks Macie had given him.Even though he was still mad, his mind was clearer

At that moment, Nathan was halfway through his lunch when he received a call from Nolan in his office. Nathan listened carefully and answered all of Nolan's questions truthfully. "The gift Adrian brought was quite expensive, and Mr. Fowler did end up smashing it. The assistant who let him up has already been fired. "This also involves a senior executive at the company, and Mr. Fowler has asked me to look into it. I checked earlier; that person was supposed to work in the quality control department but was transferred to marketing instead. I was with Mr. Fowler at Hart Group for a meeting this morning, so I didn't get the chance to stop it in time."Nolan frowned as he listened. It was obvious that Adrian had already paved his way into the company headquarters. There was no need to guess who helped him. It must've been Bennett, who was a manager from one of the smaller subsidiaries under Fowler Group."Have you interacted with him much? What's your impression of him?" Nolan inquired

After hearing Edward's stern and uncompromising order, Nathan nodded in agreement and got ready to investigate. Hank had messed up this time, but they had no idea if it was because Bennett had threatened him or because he wanted to curry favor with Adrian. Those were two very different scenarios."I ordered lunch from The Green Table again, Mr. Fowler. I'll bring it to you once it arrives," Nathan said."I don't want it. You can have mine," Edward responded, flipping open a folder to start his work."But you're still on medication. If you starve yourself—" Nathan started. "I said that I don't want it." Edward's tone turned cold. Nathan immediately fell silent. He nodded respectfully before quietly leaving the room. As Edward's assistant, it was his responsibility to inform Yosef about Edward skipping his meal, especially since the latter had only recently been discharged from the hospital. Instead of passing the message himself, he had one of the bodyguards do it while he went d
