Chapter 36

Author: Flower Sock
Anathea's phone screen lit up again with a text from Evangeline inviting her to the team-building event on Friday that also doubled as a welcoming party for Anathea.

Anathea stared at the screen blankly until it dimmed and blacked out entirely. Only then did she pick up her phone, brace her weight on her knees as she stood, and reply to Evangeline. "I've got plans on Friday. Go ahead without me."

She sent the same text to the male colleague who had messaged her earlier.

In truth, Anathea had never been a fan of social gatherings like team-building events. Besides, she wanted to maximize her time to make as much money as she could.

William had told her that he'd wire the three million dollars to her account the next day to help her with Fiona's surgery bills. Anathea was grateful to him, and she knew she could count on him to support them in times of need.

However, Anathea spent the better part of the next day waiting to hear from William about the money but to no avail.

But in the end, Anathea turned her face away and calmly said, "Gregory, there's too much between us. You can't just say 'let's start over' and expect everything to go back to how it was."The truth was, she had wavered. She had once wanted to try again with him.Even though he had hurt her over and over, and her feelings for him had nearly faded, she still wavered when he said he would help her find them again.Unfortunately, even if they had both come so close to meeting in the middle, the final steps remained an unbridgeable gap between them.First, there was the Sinclair family. They were deeply tangled in schemes and as ruthless as starving beasts. The moment they caught even the slightest hint of blood, they would go wild, attacking fiercely and dragging her into an endless abyss of despair.Second, there was her father, Adam. The Castenea Bridge incident had always been riddled with suspicion. Anathea had found gaps in the so-called evidence, but she still couldn't fully pro

Just as Anathea turned to leave the room, she heard a faint rustling behind her."The couch is too hard. You won't sleep comfortably," Gregory said."It's just one night. I'll be fine—"Before she could finish, a pair of strong arms suddenly wrapped around her waist from behind. Her entire body tensed. The rest of her words caught in her throat. She could clearly feel his breath against her ear.Gregory rested his chin on her shoulder. The crisp scent of cedar mixed with the sharp tang of alcohol washed over her like a wave of heat. She froze for a moment, then instinctively tried to pull away. Yet, he only held her tighter."Annie, just let me hold you for a little while. I've missed you so much that it's driving me crazy," he murmured.A flicker of emotion passed through her eyes.Gregory's voice grew husky as he continued, "I've lived nearly 30 years without ever regretting a single decision. I always believed that every choice I made was the right one, but…"Anathea coul

Anathea paused, still holding her spoon, and gently said, "No, Grandma. I'll just slow down."Brisa looked puzzled and let out a sigh. "Why are you in such a rush to leave? Is it because I'm too naggy? Or because I lied to you? Do you not even want to spare me a glance anymore?"Her voice was tinged with sadness and disappointment."Of course not," Anathea said, shaking her head to ease Brisa's worries. "I just—""Well, that's good," Brisa smiled, cutting her off. "I'll have Dalia get your room ready for you and Greg. You should stay the night and get some rest."Before Anathea could protest, Brisa was already up and giving orders. Anathea couldn't help but feel a little helpless as she watched Brisa happily bustling about. At the same time, she glanced toward Gregory, who was resting with his eyes closed on the couch. Her mind drifted back to when he had gently rubbed her forehead earlier. She stirred her bowl of white fish chowder absentmindedly.Dalia worked fast. In no tim

Gregory didn't close his eyes again. Instead, he kept them open and helped Anathea watch the road. The car finally came to a stop outside the Sinclair residence.Anathea quickly stepped out and rushed toward the house. It was dark, and the path was hard to see. She stumbled slightly.A strong hand caught her elbow. The crisp scent of cedar surrounded her.Anathea pursed her lips and gently pushed him away. "Thank you, but I can walk on my own.""But I can't," Gregory replied, his voice slightly unsteady and weary from the alcohol.Left with no choice, Anathea allowed him to lean on her as they supported each other into the house."Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair, you're here," Dalia greeted.Anathea let go of Gregory and anxiously asked, "How is Grandma?" Dalia hesitated. "Well…" But as she reached the room, she caught a sharp, excited voice calling out, "Pair of twos! I win!"Anathea paused. Through the narrow gap in the door, she saw Brisa playing cards with Isabel and Adrian."

Gregory quickly braced himself against the seat.It turned out the car had just come out of an alley and made a turn, and Gregory hadn't quite settled into his seat."Apologies, Mr. Sinclair," Martin said."It's fine," Gregory replied, leaning slightly toward Anathea. The warmth of his presence brushed faintly across her face.He straightened up and created some distance between them before saying, "Drive more carefully."Martin nodded repeatedly, but the very next second, his phone rang."What?" he said.Anathea watched as Martin's expression instantly changed the moment he heard the voice on the other end. He took a deep breath, as if trying to suppress his emotions. "Take Mom to the hospital first. I'll head over soon," he said.Anathea caught the tremor in his tone. He was genuinely scared."Is everything okay?" she asked."My mom got into a car accident. She's being taken to the hospital," Martin said, breathing heavily. "Pull over ahead and take a cab to the hospita

Anathea noticed Jenny looking like she wanted to come over, but wasn't sure if she should. She smiled softly and stepped forward. "How's the cut on your head?"Jenny turned her head to show her. "It's fine now. No scar at all.""That's good," Anathea said, pulling two small gift boxes from her bag and handing them over. "These are for you and Bella. Please give this to her for me.""Mrs. Sinclair, aren't you coming back with us?" Jenny asked, feeling confused."No. I've got my own place now. Just take Xander home," she replied simply. Anathea bought an apartment near the company. At the mention of this, Xander's expression changed. He gripped Anathea's hand tightly. "Mommy, why aren't you coming home with me?"Anathea knew his temper too well. If she told him the truth outright, he would definitely throw a fit, so she casually made up an excuse."I still have work to finish. I won't go back for now. Go home early and get some rest. Be good in class tomorrow," she said."Okay,
