Chapter 5

Since I got kicked out of my father's house, all I promised myself was that I would do anything to make them pay for what they had done to me. It was easy at first if I thought to do it in my head, but it seemed the world had a different plan because the more I tried to be successful, the more I felt something was missing in my life.

I needed to know whatever it was, but how? I was the victim. However, from other people's perspectives, I was the one who cheated on Lance, even though he had been sleeping with Brenda behind my back. I was dumb enough to trust someone like her. No, I was fucking dumb not to see she had hatred and insecurities towards me.

I treated Brenda as my sister; she was always with me, aside from my sister, Ava. The pain she had caused me was so unbearable at first that I wanted to smack her face for hurting and betraying me. If she wanted Lance, I wouldn't mind giving him to her because my friendship with her was way more important than that of a man.

"Good morning, Sir Lance." I heard the employees greet him. Applying to McWealth was the most regrettable decision I had ever made. I didn't know Lance was part of McWealth because he had his own company to manage.

Lance was the successor of his family's business, yet I never met his other relatives. We were planning to meet them after the wedding, but unfortunately, it won't happen.

He looked like Brenda had truly taken care of him, and he seemed less stressed because of her. I heard from the news that Brenda had had a miscarriage several times, but they were still trying to have a baby of their own. I watched Lance step inside the elevator, but when our eyes were about to meet, the elevator shut. Shit.

The elevator was only for the investors in the company. Lance might be one of the important people in the McWealth, and it made my mind filled with anxiety. I believed he might fire me once he got the chance to see me. I glanced at my wristwatch, and when I was about to turn around, I saw Mr. McWealth come out of the elevator.

Mr. McWealth had a powerful, domineering aura when he walked closer to me. I noticed a relief in his complexion when he fixed his tie before he sighed.

“What are you still doing here?” His sharp tone made my skin itch. He was only harsh to me. “Do you forget we have the upcoming presentation to our investors? Miss Velasquez, I'm not fucking paying you so you can go to the cafeteria whenever you want.”

“I--I'm sorry, Mr. McWealth, I---”

“I don't want to hear your gibberish excuse! If you have a stable plan to work with my company, then better do your best. I want to remind you that I don't tolerate office relationships!” He gnashed his teeth and then left me. I almost stumbled on the floor when his shoulder bumped into mine. Shit.

“Mr. McWealth, where are you going? I'm sorry if I went to the cafeteria without your notice. I'm famished, and I might pass out once I don't eat a bit.” I jogged towards him, following him like a dog to her master. He didn't say anything, but I noticed the car parked after we exited the company.

“I have a meeting. Get inside," he coldly answered. I saw a man come out of the car and then open the back seat for him. My mind was such a mess because I still couldn't understand why he wanted me to go with him. What about my food? I was starving, and it would be embarrassing if he heard how my stomach grumbled.

“Get in! What are you waiting for? Do you want me to open this freaking door for you?” He almost screamed, making the man panic. He then opened the passenger door for me. I heard him scoff and then checked the papers inside his car.

I quickly went inside, even though I was questionable as to why he brought me. Perhaps he didn't want to be late to his upcoming meetings. However, I was wrong because we halted in the luxurious restaurant. I didn't bother to ask him, but only followed him when he came inside.

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Rhyder McWealth.” I heard a man walk past me, intentionally bumping into my shoulder, making Mr. McWealth give him a death glare.

“I want a private room. You know how I hate to socialise.” He looked in my direction and held my hand before he dragged me like he owned the restaurant. My heart skipped a bit, but I tried to remove the unknown feelings from it.

We both stopped in front of the private room, and he pushed me to take a seat. I couldn't believe he didn't have a gentlemanly spot in his attitude.

“Order whatever you want, and I want you to take an order for me," he said, using his business tone before he took his phone and then typed something in his phone.

As I held the menu, I was taken aback when I saw how expensive the meals were. I felt my vision was getting fuzzy, which made me put down the menu before I gave him a look. I was surprised when I saw his eyes focusing on me, making me think about Adam.

“I don't know how to order...” I didn't know what I was going to say, especially when I heard his teeth clenched. I assumed he was annoyed at me.

“It's impossible; you don't know how to read the menu. They already stated what the ingredients of the meal are, yet you still don't know. Are you from the countryside?” he bluntly inquired. I cleared my throat to prevent myself from talking back at him. Of course! I knew these meals because I used to eat this kind of food when I was with my father and Ava.

He aggressively grabbed the menu from my hands, and he was the one who ordered our meals. My hands were shaking in fear. I remembered that this restaurant was one of Brenda’s favorites. She always asked me to accompany her when we were studying.

“Are you alright? You seem anxious,” Mr. McWealth gave me a gaze with skepticism. He arched his brow, trying to intimidate me so I could tell him the truth.

“N-Nothing, Mr. McWealth. I want to use the comfort room.” I stammered, making me lick my lips, and stopped shaking my hands. I saw Mr. McWealth drop his phone at the table before he nodded.

“Make it fast. I have a meeting.”

I didn't wait for him to tell me where the comfort room was because I was aware of this place. It took me ten minutes before I finally got my confidence. I felt something was off, and I didn't know what it was.

“Oh, Lance is with you at that time? I feel bad for him, Brenda!”

I was about to open the cubicle when I heard a group of women come inside the bathroom. I gulped in suspicion because that woman might be talking with a different Lance or Brenda.

“He used to fuck other girls behind my back. It's quits! He won't need to know about my affairs.” Brenda's loud voice made me jump in surprise. Shit.
