Kaelen’s chest gave a sudden, violence-racked heave as his breath hitched sharply—a ragged, agonizing gasp of re-entering life. Yet his storm-grey eyes remained tightly closed, his body sinking back into the profound, heavy sleep of deep soul-healing.

Sariel stepped forward, lowering his silver broadsword and exhaling a quiet, trembling breath. "His grace has anchored. The divine core is restored, but his vessel requires absolute rest to absorb the Highborn energy."

Elior sheathed his twin daggers, turning to look at Sera with a solemnity that belied his usual mischievous nature. "You need to go to the Citadel, Sera. The entire High Council and the higher entities felt your awakening. They are waiting for you."

Leaving Kaelen resting peacefully under the guard of the estate's wards, Sera made her way to the Citadel.

When she stepped through the grand archways of the High Sanctum, the sheer magnitude of her presence echoed through the vast marble halls. Hundreds of angels, winged sentinels, and high commanders lined the soaring corridors. As one, every single celestial warrior dropped to their knees, bowing their heads in absolute, instinctual reverence to the Highborn of the Aether.

At the center of the vast, starlit hall stood the Seraphim—numerous towering, multi-winged beings of pure divine radiance.

Sera stopped at the center of the polished floor. One of the central Seraphim stepped forward, its majestic form radiating an ethereal glow. Without uttering a vocal sound, the Seraphim projected its consciousness directly into Sera’s mind.

Receive that which was veiled, Highborn.

A sudden, blinding wave of flashing white light surged through Sera’s consciousness. A violent torrent of forgotten centuries rushed backward into her mind, shattering the final lingering barriers of her mortal perception.

She saw herself as she truly was before the foundation of the mortal world—the Highborn of the Aether, a primordial entity of absolute authority. Beside her in the ancient memories stood Celi, who had also been a Highborn, her sister in primordial light.

The memory shifted to the Great Rift. Celi had grown enamored with Malachyros, a powerful fallen commander of the deep trench. Driven by a desire for dark sovereignty, Celi and Malachyros raised a rebellion against the Aether, seeking to overthrow the divine order. When the uprising failed, Celi and Malachyros were cast out into the Underworld, where they became the supreme rulers of the dark forces.

Sera had tried desperately to intervene and save her sister from corruption, but the rift was too vast. To prevent total cosmic imbalance, the High Council and the primordial order bound Sera and Celi into mortal shells on Earth, stripping them of their memories so their destructive power would remain sealed.

Yet Celi’s dark tether could not be permanently erased. Walking through the dark alleyways of the mortal realm years later, Celi crossed paths with a disguised Malachyros. The fallen prince manipulated her, breaking her mortal seal and restoring her ancient memories. Remembering her true dark heritage and her love for Malachyros, Celi willingly returned to his side as the Princess of Hell, leaving behind the fake scorched mark to fake her death.

Then another wave of light washed over Sera’s mind, bringing a breathless, overwhelming warmth.

Before the civil war, before the galaxies were spoken into existence, Sera and Kaelen were lovers. Their bond was an ancient, sacred union forged in the dawn of creation. But when the war broke out and they were cast into mortal and bound celestial roles, their memories of each other were wiped away to protect the cosmic balance. Yet, despite the vastness of time and lost memories, their souls had gravitated toward each other once again.

The light faded. Sera stood in the center of the quiet hall, her starlit eyes wide as she took a shaky breath. She remembered. She remembered everything—every millennium, every war, every kiss shared beneath forgotten stars.

"Do you remember now, Sera?"

Sera turned sharply at the sound of Sariel’s measured voice behind her. Elior stood beside him, both archangels looking at her with quiet, knowing expressions.

A wave of utter confusion and shock washed over Sera. "Sariel...? Elior...? You... you knew?"

Elior nodded gently, his voice devoid of teasing. "We knew who you were. And Kaelen knew as well."

"He knew?" Sera whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "How? Why didn't anyone tell me?!"

"Kaelen strictly forbade us from speaking a word," Elior explained softly. "He knew that forcing your memories back before your soul was strong enough would shatter your human mind."

"When did he find out?" Sera demanded, her voice trembling.

"When he was imprisoned in the lower vaults," a low, raspy, deeply familiar voice echoed from the archway.

Sera’s breath caught in her throat. She spun around.

Standing at the entrance of the hall was Kaelen. Though still pale from the brink of death, he stood tall, his storm-grey eyes burning with a deep, infinite love that predated time itself.

Sera stood frozen, her chest heaving as a rush of ancient emotions—a love formed before the earth was made, before the stars were flung into the void—flooded her soul.

"Kaelen..." Sera breathed, taking a slow step toward him. "Why didn't you tell me when you remembered?"

Kaelen walked toward her, every heavy footstep echoing through the silent hall until he stood inches away from her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing the curve of her face with absolute tenderness.

"Because I saw how much pain you were carrying as a mortal," Kaelen murmured softly, his voice thick with raw devotion. "I saw you grieving a sister who had already abandoned you, fighting a war you didn't ask for. If I had dropped the weight of eternity onto your shoulders, it would have destroyed you. I wanted to protect you for as long as I could, Seraphina."

Sera looked deep into his storm-grey eyes, seeing the agonizing restraint he had carried every single day—watching the woman he loved since the dawn of creation struggle in ignorance, unable to fully hold her as his own.

Suddenly, everything from the night before made sense—the raw vulnerability in his eyes, the heavy silence before he kissed her, and the absolute disregard he had shown for the Council's laws. He hadn't just given in to temptation; he had surrendered to the timeless pull of the soul that belonged to him. He had dropped his guard and taken her into his arms because he couldn't bear to spend another second pretending she was a stranger.

Sera closed her eyes, leaning her face deeply into his palm, letting her tears fall against his skin as she wrapped her arms around his waist, holding the love of her life tight against her heart.

The hiss of the espresso machine was the heartbeat of The Grind & Grain. Outside, the fog rolled off the coastal waters of Blackwood Bay, thick and silver-gray, pressing against the glass windows like a curious ghost. Inside, the air smelled of freshly ground Arabica, toasted hazelnut, and warm cinnamon rolls.Seraphina wiped down the mahogany counter with a damp rag, a soft, comfortable rhythm guiding her hands. She paused to catch her reflection in the glass display case apron slightly dusted with flour, brown hair tied up in a messy bun, and a faint, contented smile on her face. Life wasn't lavish, but it was hers. It was quiet, safe, and above all, shared with Celeste. That was more than enough."One oat milk latte with extra caramel drizzle, coming right up!" Sera called out, setting the steaming mug onto the pass."Bless you, Sera. You're the only reason I survive these eight-a.m. faculty meetings," Mr. Henderson said, sliding a crisp bill across the counter. The old colle

Hours bled into one another, but time had lost all meaning inside the freezing bedroom. Sera didn't move. She sat on the floor with her back pressed against the frame of the bed, rocking Celi’s cold, lifeless body against her chest. Her arms were wrapped so tightly around her sister that her knuckles had turned stark white, her chin resting on top of Celi’s still hair. Her tears had dried into stiff, itchy tracks on her cheeks, leaving behind an empty, hollow ache that swallowed her whole. Every single memory of Celi crashed over Sera in relentless, agonizing waves. Celi at ten years old, crying because she dropped her ice cream on the pavement, and Sera giving up her own cone to make her smile again. Celi at fifteen, terrified and clinging to Sera’s hand in the drafty courtroom as a judge signed away their late parents' estate, declaring twenty-three-year-old Sera as her official guardian. Celi just yesterday, laughing till her cheeks turned pink over a plate of hot lasagna, w

Sera hurried back to her apartment, her mind racing faster than her steps. Mr. Henderson had given her a name Lila and the name of a town, though he couldn't provide an exact address. I'll just have to ask around when I get there, Sera thought, her resolve unwavering. She began packing with frantic urgency, shoving items into her bag as if she had no intention of ever coming back. Almost everything she packed belonged to Celi: a few of her favorite clothes, her softest sweaters, and her secret diary held close to Sera's chest. She didn't say goodbye to Mark or Maya. She couldn't risk them talking her out of it or calling the police to stop her. Slipping out in silence, she headed straight for the airport and boarded a flight bound for Europe. After long, grueling hours of travel, Sera finally arrived at the foot of the misty mountains, stepping into the quiet, secluded town of Ravenspire. A Strange New World Ravenspire felt frozen in time. The cobblestone streets were lined with

  • Wings and Wicked Things   Chapter Four

The daylight faded into a dismal, heavy grey outside Lila’s windows as hours bled into one another. The apartment was practically buried in mountain ranges of old parchment, leather-bound grimoires, and brittle manuscripts. Sera sank back onto the worn velvet sofa, pressing the heels of her palms against her temples to massage away a thumping headache. Her eyes burned from reading Latin passages, obscure dialects, and terrifying medieval illustrations. Beside her, Lila was still glued to her desk, turning yellowed pages with a sharp, disciplined focus that never seemed to waver. Closing her eyes, Sera took a long, quiet breath, letting the steady hum of the rain outside ground her. After a few minutes, she forced herself to stand up. She walked over to Lila’s small kitchen nook and made two mugs of rich, hot chocolate, letting the sweet aroma cut through the thick smell of old paper and dried herbs. Sera set one mug near Lila’s elbow and took a seat across from her, wrapping her c

Sera collapsed into the worn leather seat at the very back of the bus, clutching her backpack to her chest as her heavy breaths slowly evened out. She had made it with seconds to spare. Aside from the tired driver, there were only five other passengers scattered throughout the dimly lit aisle—a weary night-shift worker, an elderly couple wrapped in wool coats, and two teenagers plugged into headphones. Sera leaned her temple against the cool glass window, watching Ravenspire slip away into the dark. Despite the looming shadow of the cult, the town was painfully beautiful at night. The soft glow of iron lanterns illuminated the cobblestone streets, and the steep timber roofs stood silent against the backdrop of fog-drenched pine trees. It looked so peaceful. So safe. It was hard to believe an ancient evil was quietly harvesting the souls of young women right beneath its cobblestones. Forty-five minutes later, the bus hissed to a halt at the desolate edge of the neighboring tow

  • Wings and Wicked Things   Chapter Six

The trek back through the Oakhaven forest felt entirely different with Kaelen walking beside her. Where Sera had stumbled over roots and flinched at every snapping twig an hour ago, Kaelen moved like a phantom. His long, silent strides effortlessly cut through the dense underbrush. Even in his human disguise—the heavy charcoal trench coat and dark tunic—an aura of absolute power radiated from him, forcing the freezing mountain wind to yield around his broad shoulders. Sera practically had to power-walk to keep up with him, her lungs burning in the crisp night air. "So..." Sera rasped out, breaking the heavy silence between them. "Kaelen." The angel didn't turn his head. His storm-grey eyes remained locked on the dark treeline ahead, sharp and vigilant. "Speak, mortal." "How long are you bound to me?" she asked, clutching her backpack straps tightly. "If we stop the cult... if we save those other eleven girls... do you just vanish back up to Heaven?" Kaelen paused briefly
