THERESA

A couple days later, my brother Tyce finally returned home with his mate, Gigi. “Tyce!” I screamed as he walked in the door, throwing my arms around him.

“Hey, Terr bear,” he replied, messing up my hair as he pulled back from the hug. I pushed his hand off my head and gave him a shove.

“Welcome home, Gigi!” I exclaimed to my soon-to-be sister-in-law and pulled her in for an even bigger hug.

“Thanks, Terri,” she replied, returning the hug. I didn’t know her well, but I liked Gigi so far. She was good for Tyce. Every time he’d glance her way, a smile would sneak onto his face.

As I let go of Gigi, I said, “I feel like I’ve barely had a chance to get to know you. We should hang out tonight, if you’re up for it of course. I know you just got in from a long flight.”

“I’d love that,” she replied with a big smile and no hesitation.

“Yay! How about we head down to the local pub for dinner instead of staying in?”

“Yeah, that would be great!”

“You can hold down the fort with the ‘rent

NIKOLAII had seen that look before. I knew it instantly.Tyce’s entire body went rigid. His breath caught in his throat. Something unseen, tragic, passed through him. His fists clenched into balls, and his face twisted, eyes squeezing shut as he braced against it. Then, just as quickly as it came, it was gone.He blinked a few times, then collapsed into the hotel chair like his legs had given out.“Tyce?” I approached him cautiously. For a moment, he looked lost. Like a child searching for something just out of reach, grasping for answers that wouldn’t come. Vulnerability flickered across his face. Then, his expression hardened.“Sophia’s dead,” he said in a flat voice. With a heavy sigh, he dragged a hand down his face.I stared at him. “Dead?”“Dead,” he repeated. His jaw clenched so tight a muscle twitched beneath his cheek. “Fuck.”“Fuck,” I echoed, the weight of it settling over us like a dark cloud.Tyce let out a loud exhale. “Terri’s hysteria… that must be why. It has to be.

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 107

THERESAI searched the guards’ bodies quickly, sniffing until I found a key in the pocket of the first man I’d killed. The size of it told me it had to be the gate key. There was no possible way it would fit into the cuffs around our limbs. I put it aside and continue my search. But I came up empty-pawed. The only other keys I was able to locate were very clearly house and car keys. Which did us no good. They hadn’t brought the keys to unlock our chains.I let out a frustrated sigh. It probably would have been useless anyway. It wasn’t like I had great fine motor skills in this form. I couldn’t even see an obvious way I’d be able to unlock the gate in this form. And the cuffs were still wrapped around my legs, with chain links hanging from them, preventing me from being able to shift into my human form.I locked eyes with Gigi.We were going to have to burn her chains apart too. I mindlinked her my thoughts. She gave me a nod, though I could see the exhaustion in her stance. She was s

THERESAThe sound of approaching voices sent a jolt of urgency through my body.“Gigi, stay quiet. Act normal,” I mindlinked, my body going rigid as my ears flicked toward the entrance. “I’m going to pretend I’m still chained.”I hurried back to my original location, and quickly arranged the chains and myself to appear as if I were still bound. The heavy gate creaked open, scraping against the ground. Two guards stepped inside, the scent of their sweat and stale breath clinging to the cold air around them. They weren’t cautious. Weren’t paying attention. They weren’t expecting anything. The taller one, a stocky man with a thick brown beard, carried a metal tray with more dog food and water. The other, a wiry-looking man with red stubble, muttered something under his breath as he picked up the untouched bowls in front of us.The stocky guard placed the new bowls in front of us. “Eat up, bitches.”I didn’t move, didn’t even react. I waited. They turned their backs. In one swift motion,

GINGERI was creating flames. They flickered from my eyes, heat radiated outward, melting the frost-laced ground in front of me.Terri’s mindlink came again, stronger this time. “Gigi. Your eyes. What the heck was that?”My pulse hammered.“I don’t know,” I admitted, stunned.“Do it again.”I hesitated, my heart pounding. She lifted herself slightly. Suddenly, she wasn't drowning in grief. She looked… hopeful.I squeezed my eyes shut. What had triggered it? What had caused the fire?Sophia. Her screams. The way her body crashed to the ground. The way the guards had just looked on, unaffected, amused. The heat surged again, filling every inch of my body, curling behind my eyes like an inferno ready to burst. Dread and anguish bubbled in my chest and stomach, boiling me from the inside out.Flames poured from my eyes, hotter, stronger, melting the frozen ground in front of us into mud.“Holy cannoli!” Terri’s voice rang through the link in a mix of shock and wonderment.I panted, strugg

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 104

GINGERI didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to say. I felt truly, utterly helpless. After the howls stopped, long after they’d taken Sophia away, Terri fell into a heap and hadn’t moved since. She just lay there. Her body was eerily still while her eyes stared out into nothing. Comatose.I could still hear the snap. Still picture the way Sophia’s body had hit the ground. Still hear the sound the axe made as it severed her cervical vertebrae. Still see the guards dragging her away. That moment would be forever burned in my mind. While I thought I’d gone through a lot in my life, nothing had even come close to what I’d just witnessed. My stomach twisted with a sickening realization. When Sara had tortured that man—the one she had captured and interrogated for answers—I had hesitated. I had tried to convince myself there had to be another way. That torture wasn’t necessary. But now?If I had known, if I had witnessed something like this first, I would have done it. I would have c

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 103

THERESABeside me, Gigi let out a feral growl, yanking violently at her chains. The sound of metal clanking against metal rang through the cave, but it was useless. We were trapped. Forced to watch this brutal exercise in cruelty. They hit her. Kicked her. Broke her bones. Over and over, they battered her like she was nothing. When that didn’t work, they brought out the knives. Cut into her flesh. Took pieces of her.I had witnessed torture before. My father had made sure of it, forcing me to watch from a young age, trying to desensitize me to violence. I had been exposed to it over and over again, pushed past the point of repulsion, forced to stomach it. But this? This was different.Because this was Sophia. My best friend. The person who had always been there for me, who had held me together when I was falling apart, who didn’t deserve a second of this. And I could do nothing.I retched at one point, but there was nothing left inside me. Just bile. I hadn’t eaten for days.I didn’t

THERESASophia shook violently."I think," Wes continued, rolling his shoulders, "we need to demonstrate just how much I’m not joking."A fresh wave of terror surged through me. I yanked against my chains again, putting every last bit of strength I had into trying to tear them from the wall. Blood dripped down my legs. I knew it was pointless. But I couldn't just sit there. Not while he—Wes grabbed Sophia’s arm and twisted. A sickening pop echoed through the cavern.Sophia’s screams shattered me.Her pain was visceral, piercing, raw, unbearable. My best friend, the girl who had always been my rock, the one who was always there for me, was being dragged into this thing she had nothing to do with, being tortured. And I could do nothing. Her body was convulsing, curling in on itself as she gasped through the white-hot agony.Wes watched her suffer with nothing more than mild curiosity, like he was observing an insect struggling under his boot."You see," he said, "I don’t think you unde

THERESAA dull, throbbing ache pulsed through my body as I drifted in and out of consciousness. My head felt too heavy, my limbs numb and useless. My eyes fluttered open, but my vision was blurry, distorted from the lingering effects of the tranquilizer.“She’s awake,” a voice murmured beyond the gate that kept us confined in this cave. Not that the barrier was necessary. The heavy chains ensured we weren’t going anywhere.I turned my head with effort. My muscles were stiff and achy. Gigi’s eyes were already open, staring ahead."How long were we out?" I mindlinked her."I don’t know. I don’t even know what day it is anymore.""They’re doing this on purpose. They want us to lose track of time. They want us disoriented."Gigi exhaled sharply through her nose. "Well, they can go fuck themselves."I was weak, becoming weaker by the day, starved, and breaking down bit by bit. They knew what they were doing. I just had to hope Gigi and I were both strong enough to overcome their tactics. W

NIKOLAIMy pulse pounded in my throat, but I forced my face to remain still. I couldn’t spiral. Not like Tyce. But the truth was, I was just as fucking scared.Where are you, Terri? My fingers twitched toward the switchblade at my hip—an impulsive behavior I hadn’t realized I was doing until I felt the cool metal in my palm. What was I going to do? Cut through my own helplessness?I ground my teeth. If something happened to her—if she didn’t make it out of this—NO.I exhaled sharply through my nose. Get a grip, Volkov. I couldn’t afford to panic. Not now. I forced myself to keep my breathing steady. But my wolf was restless. Prowling inside me.We waited for Joe to be coherent enough to give us something useful. But he was barely responsive. Every question we asked only got vague, agonized answers, if we got anything at all. He barely even registered the fact that we were in the room with him.She was hysterical. That’s all he could tell us.Tyce suddenly stopped mid-step. “What if—”
