“Minah!”
Minah looked over her shoulder as soon as she heard her younger sister, Leigh, call her name. Leigh was glancing through her classroom window.Minah was eighteen and in her senior year in middle school whereas Leigh was fourteen and is now in her sophomore year.“Minah…” Leigh hollered once again.“What?” she finally ceded, whispering. She then gestured to her to leave otherwise she'd get caught by her teacher red-handed.Minah looked away from her and glanced at Mrs. Gipitulan for a moment. It seemed like the teacher was in her glorious moment explaining today's topic in class. She looked back at Leigh and finally got the gist of distress written on her face.Couldn't bear to see her sister like that, so she finally took the courage to raise a hand.“Excuse me, Ma’am. May I go out?”Mrs. Gipitulan and a bunch of other students' eyes landed on her.“Again? Where to?”“Toilet, Ma’am.” And for the nth time, she came up with the same alibi. If she would say she is going to cut class, hell would break, they will never allow her to take a single step outside the room.“We'll have a quiz after the discussion. You better hurry,” she told her, giving her an iritated look.Minah walked out of the room, her arms crossed on her chest. At this point, she had an idea what her sister wanted from her. Chances are she must have forgotten to take her medication this morning, or she must have forgotten to bring her book, or maybe her project, or her notes. As soon as she came out, Leigh grabbed her hand almost immediately. Much to her surprise, standing behind Leigh was Beka, whose eyes were darting on the floor.Minah's brows promptly furrowed as soon as she studied her sister and Beka whose uniforms were completely scrunched up, reeking of spiced vinegar.Leigh was a premature baby and was born with a serious condition called hemolytic anemia. On top of that, she has a heart condition, too. There were times when she was suddenly down with a fever and became unconscious out of the blue—which made her anxious all the time.Leigh was her half-sister, a biological offspring of her mother, Diana, and Julian, her stepfather. Diana used to work in a private school's canteen where she met Julian. They got married a few months later right after giving birth to Leigh. The first two years of their marriage were decent, until Julian got laid off from the factory. The latter started to become a different person. He become a heavy drinker, and a compulsive gambler and even committed several marital infidelities. His problematic behavior caused him to become violent towards not only his wife but also his innocent daughter, Leigh. As far as Minah could remember, she was nine years old when she started convincing her mother to leave Julian and find a far better place where she, her mom, and Leigh can live peacefully together.Minah could not even count how frequently she would pack their things and move out away from his abusive stepfather, only to find themselves returning to his flat in less than a month. Her mother's reason was always the same. She would never leave her father just because she was clinging on a stupid vow they made in front of the altar. Through thick and thin, she will never desert her husband. That no matter what, she would always hold on to his promise which was to give her the perfect family. And that never ending belief that Leigh needs her father.Minah's mother's stupid reason rendered her speechless. What is the use of having a man who can not do his role as a husband or even as a father? Any child would be willing to disown his or her father if treated as a punching bag. However, Diana never learned her lesson. In the end, Minah got fed up, got used to it and stopped convincing Diana.“Pack up the things. We will leave this damn house right now! I can't stand your father any longer!” she remembered her mom saying this after having a huge argument with her husband. But Minah didn't budge. Her eyes remained focused on the TV, keeping herself busy eating her favorite snacks.“Minah, didn't you hear what I just said? I just told you to pack up, didn't I?”Frowning, Minah turned to her distressed mother. Diana's lips were swollen, and her neck was marked with fresh bruises.“What for? We only end up coming back here as usual. I'm so done with this moving back and forth cycle if you ask me.”Minah eventually started praying for Julian's death, wishing the demon to take the man away from them and banish him into the pit of hell so that they can escape their miserable life forever.Eventually, her prayer was finally heard. Although it took years, she could not explain how happy she was when she found out that Julia was rushed to the hospital. It was said that he was stabbed by his fellow drunkard. Then first question she asked the Doctor was:“How much time does that jerk have?”“Fifty-fifty. There's a huge chance that he'll never make it..."Fifty- fifty. Minah considered it still a high chance. She could not bear seeing Julian alive. That is why she never stopped praying. She desperately hoped for his step father to finally succumb to his death. After two days in the hospital, Julian finally breathed his last, making Minah the happiest teenager at last. When Julian died, Diana instantly carried the responsibility as the head of the family, while Minah on the other hand, functioned as Leigh's mother and guardian. It was tough and hard, but she preferred that over having Julian alive. They no longer had to live in fear living in one roof with a dangerous and evil man like her step-father.When Leigh had become more ill than ever before. Minah was forced to drop school for two years just so she could take care of her frail sister until she finally got better. It took time before the doctor allowed Leigh to finally get back to school.Even though she looked weary most of the time because of work, Minah finally took a glimpse of how beautiful Diana was without bruises all over her face. Then, their lives started to become a bit better when Diana got a job as an all-around maid in a rest house in Guimaras.Years passed, but Leigh still could not handle physical activity, that is why Minah did all the physical activities on her behalf. However, due to her being the weakest, the thinnest, and the most aloof girl in class, Leigh often got bullied. And Minah will always get into trouble in her defense.“Tell me who the hell did this?” Minah retorted. It was as though something had sparked her anger upon seeing her sister's pitiful state.Shaking in nervousness, Leigh just looked down. “Can I just go home, Minah? Beka will take me home.”“Not until you tell me what happened,” she insisted.Leigh bit her lips. They always leave home and leave school together. If Leigh was sick, Minah would not attend class just so she would be taken care of. Well, Leigh can't go to school either if Minah was sick since no one will accompany her to school. Considering the distance, too, it was not safe for Leigh to just go by herself.Minah could not help but feel worried for her sister. She was just scared for her overall well-being, especially her sister's constant illness.“I slipped on the floor. That's it.” Leigh replied finally.“You slipped on the floor then what? Swamped onto the pool of spiced vinegar? At least come up with a better lie. Just tell me who did it while I am still asking nicely.”Leigh's lips remained shut. Minah then turned to confront Beka. Just one gaze and it was enough for Beka to shudder.“D-Damon did it… He spilled stinky sauce on us when we were coming out of the toilet!”Minah could feel her head heating up in anger.“Beka!” Leigh tried to disrupt her. Too late, though.Minah shot her a glare.Leigh immediately shut her mouth.“Wait here.” She uncrossed her arms and like a dragon who spits fire, she marched towards Building 3 where the fifteen-year-old bully usually hangs out.Leigh halted in the middle of the living room. She was fidgeting back and forth. A tear of dissatisfaction on her face was evident.Minah casually placed her backpack on the ragged couch before turning on her heels to face her.“Are you mad or just very thankful?”Leigh spun around, ready to confront her at last. Minah could not help but raise a brow when she her annoyed expression.“Thankful?” Leigh responded in an incredulous tone. “Do you realize what you just did to Damon? You are way too old to—”An exasperated sigh escaped from Minah's mouth. “Excuse me, Leigh. Eighteen is definitely not too old. Do you see any wrinkles on my skin? Does my hair look gray? Do I smell like land or earth?”A thin and awkward smile formed on Leigh's dry lips. Could not she be any more cringe? “You just smack a boy who was three years younger than you... Don't you feel sorry for what you did?”“Why on earth would I feel sorry for him? Did he even feel sorry for you? What does his age have to do with
Dumangas, Iloilo PhilippinesMinah entered the famous boutique shop, completely deadpan. The man who had been standing by the watches' display was looking at her from afar.Juan Miguel Fuego. She was able to get the man's contact number right off the bat. After the confrontation Diana had with him the previous day, Diana resigned from her job in the rest house. She had been suspecting who the owner was.And her mother was right all along, the property was owned by Juan Miguel’s friend whose name is Bernardo Reyes and her mother had no idea about it. She was even over the moon when she got the job, completely clueless about what was going to happen ahead of her.Bernardo himself got Minah's call and he was the one who handed Juan Miguel's phone number to her after introducing herself briefly. Almost immediately, Minah called Juan Miguel and told him she wanted to meet him. Of course, without hesitation, the man agreed. He even sounded excited and happy.Juan Miguel canceled his flight
Catching her breath and tears swelling in her eyes, Minah's body was covered with beads of sweat. Fear and agitation were quickly creeping into her heart. It was past midnight and the fire trucks were roaring down the street, breaking their used-to-be quiet neighborhood.Diana tried to call her on her cell phone earlier but Minah deliberately ignored her. She knew herself too well, talking to Diana right now might just end up starting another argument. It was going to be hard to force herself to speak to her Mother when she was still too upset. Minah would be staying at Lara's apartment unit in the meantime to calm herself down. She would only be coming home when she feels like it's time to come back. No one could make her come home even if Diana begged her to.Lara's unit was also located on the eighth floor of the building where they lived. Lara had been living by herself since her mother, Celestine, got accepted to work in Singapore as a domestic helper. Her mother can only visit t
There were too many questions Minah wanted to ask, however, her head was aching so bad. She clutched her head, almost pulling her hair out. She wanted to know what kind of connection she had with Night. Why didn't he try to contact her relatives or close friends and let them know where she was? Friends? No, she didn't have one. But why was this man keeping her? Someone opened up the door but Minah did not bother to look who it was. Mrs. Dolor and Patricia stepped in, the former was holding a tray in hand with a pitcher and an empty glass in it. Mrs. Dolor's eyes were filled with concern as she watched Minah's state. Then, she turned to face her boss. “Dra. Rosauro is on her way now,” she informed him. “Keep an eye on her,” Night told them and turned away. Minah followed him with her gaze as soon as he left the room. She was grimacing in pain but she could not look past the deep ugly scar on his right shoulder. THREE small knocks brought Night back to his senses. He was in his li
“We have our reasons,” said Nathaniel as if he was able to read the question she had in her mind. “And if you are ready, you can get all the information you need in the envelope.” Reasons. Whatever they were, she was dying to know. If they were able to recover Leigh's body, why did they hide it from her adoptive family? More so, what does her sister have to do with them or with Night? Setting aside the newspaper and magazine, Minah picked up the other picture that was flipped over. Her forehead creased when she saw a picture of two unfamiliar men. They were both wearing slacks and long sleeves. She raised her face and glanced at Nathaniel who was looking intently at her. "Who are these people?"“Those pictures were taken two months ago. The man in a white shirt was Vincent Fuego. He's the son of the businessman, Juan Miguel Fuego."Fuego. Vincent Fuego. Minah had a bad feeling about him. So, this was Juan Miguel's son to his legal wife. The woman whom her mother failed to steal he
Three years later “That was great, Vintah!” the gay designer named Dacy Santino cheered in glee. He followed her to the dressing room after waiting for her for hours to come out of the studio. The paid photoshoot wrapped up successfully. Dacy owned the store that was getting more popular since she became the brand ambassador. Vintah was Minah’s stage name. Her agency, Bold & Beautiful suggested it. A few months after her reconstructive plastic surgery three years ago, she jumped right into catwalk training. Minah took off the shawl she used during the photoshoot and placed it right in front of the mirror. Her manager Molia, who was also her personal assistant, reached for it and carefully put it inside the bag where her other belongings were being kept.Minah glanced at her own reflection as she pulled her wig off. The surgery went so damn well that she would never forget how Juan Miguel and Margaux reacted when she called them via video call as Damara. She wanted them to be the fir
Seated inside their service van and arms crossed against her chest, Minah's face was sulky and her stares were intense. She could see Jay-Dee walking out of the building's exit where the photoshoot took place. The bitch was still carrying the flowers in her arms, sniffing them like a fool. Because she was in a hurry catching up with Jay-Dee, Minah had no choice but to pair her mid-thigh length cocktail dress with her three inches red stiletto. She still could not believe that Night was in Bangkok. He did not send a word to her, and she did not even receive a simple heads-up from Nathaniel. Now, here she was, waiting for the bastard to pick up the woman she hated the most. She had been bugging Nathaniel for months, asking about Night's plan for her. It wouldn't be such a biggie if Night wasn't taking hold of her passport. But the bastard took all her belongings which makes it harder for her to leave the country. She did everything she could do including searching every corner of Innif
“Why do you have too many names?” Angel kept throwing her innocent questions as she watched Minah opening the fridge door. “Me, I only have one name. And my name is Angel.” Minah rolled her eyes. As much as she wanted to act all nice, she was already irritated at the kid's constant yapping. Choosing what to cook that could only take a minute to serve added up to her stress. She depended on that chore to Molia since she couldn't eat whatever she wants anyway. She was always on a strict diet to maintain her body. “Have you gone to London? That’s where I was conceived.” Angel continued her story telling.Minah sighed deeply. Whether her mom gave birth to her on planet Nemic or wherever, she gave zero fuck. She had more important matters to think about. Talking with this little kid here for five minutes felt like wasting her entire life.Minah never liked kids. They were irritating and talkative. This particular one was a living legend. No matter how many times she ignored her, Angel j
