I leaned closer to the door and she stopped talking on the phone. I moved away from the door. Who was I kidding? Some werewolves actually had sharp senses and could know when someone else was around them. They could easily pick up the scent.

“What's it about the Ruby girl?” Her caller on the other end asked.

“Hold on a sec,” June murmured and walked towards the door.

I pressed my back against the wall and tried hard to steady my uneasy breathing as she opened the door and looked both ways.

“I thought I sensed something,” she mumbled, before shutting the door. I heard the lock rumble like she had locked it.

‘Dammit’ I cursed inwardly as I leaned against the locked door. It was impossible to hear anything with the barrier. What could she have been telling her caller about me? Were they talking about my weight, or was it something more sinister?

Werewolves did have heightened senses. I hadn't been able to use mine because Joey refused to be active for a long while.

A yawn was the first thing that escaped my mouth. I opened my eyes partially and stretched my arms before closing my eyes.My forehead throbbed intensely and I took my palm to touch it. It burned like I was seated near a furnace. When the veil of sleepiness cleared from my eyes, I raised my head and looked around my surroundings in utter confusion. The last place I remembered was the bar, drinking glasses of the infamous Devil's rum. How the heck did I get into this room? I was lying on a king-sized bed.I gasped as I reached for the back of my dress—the zipper was undone. I jerked and stumbled out of the bed.The portrait of Malcolm on the wall revealed to me that this was his room, but how did I get here?“Sandra?” I called out as I walked around the room. My legs wobbled as I moved. I felt like weights were attached to my legs.“Ruby, you're awake.” Malcolm's voice rang out from the far corner. It was obvious that he was coming from the bathroom because a towel was wrapped around

A tall man in a prison guard uniform walked towards us.“Coffee?” He asked, holding out a tray with two mugs while he held another which belonged to him in his other hand.“Thank you,” I muttered as I took mine. “No, thanks.” Millicent objected.“Really? This is the best black coffee you can find, and you'd need to be awake till your person is brought out.”“I'd try it then,” She shrugged and took the mug.She blew on the contents and took a sip, grimacing her face before she swallowed.“It's nice.” She smiled.I did a mental eye roll. I didn't know if she was lying, because this was the worst coffee I had ever tasted. The warden took his hat off before leaving.“How much longer do we have to wait?” I said tiredly as I set the cup of the disastrous coffee aside.“I don't know. I've never done this, but there is tons of paperwork to be done before we can be allowed access.”I was already tapping my feet restlessly on the floor. The wall clock did more to upset me as each tick that I h

I dialed Millicent's number, and almost immediately, the call ended. I stared at the phone screen to see that her line was busy.I was about to set my phone aside when her call came in.Without giving it much thought, I answered the call and clutched the phone closer to my ear.“Good morning Ruby. I wasn't expecting your call so soon. How are you doing?”“I'm doing great.” I responded, while adjusting the strap on the left side of my dress with one hand.“I'm really grateful for everything you did for me at moon walkers camp. I know it sounds like a simple act, but I've always thought about it since then.”I smiled. It was liberating to hear someone say something positive about me.“I was always happy to help a friend.”She continued with the small talks about how the camp felt and also feeding me bits of everything that had happened in her life since she left camp. From what she said, I could pick a few details that she was the chief in charge of the blue hills pack security district

********Moon walkers camp. When I was just seven, my mother who had been barely taking care of me claimed that she was tired. She wanted to pursue a career and I had to leave for that to be possible. That day, I sat in a bus, sandwiched between two adult strangers as they drove to the famous Moon walkers camp situated in the middle of the city.Moon walkers camp was like a charity home for children. Orphans stayed there and people whose parents couldn't cater for them like in my case also stayed there.I cried the first night I slept there. I didn't cry because of the almost tasteless food that was served, neither did I cry because of the oppressive rules to be followed, but I cried because I got to experience that my mother hated me.Millicent was the girl who slept on the lower side of my bunk. I remember when she pleaded with me in her soft scared voice that I should take the upper side as she is afraid of heights. The only thing I remembered doing was reporting another girl who k

I relentlessly stared at where the man sat, as though my hard stare would cause him to appear. If he was a clone creature who had disappeared into thin air, then I would be less troubled. Clone creature? Things like that only existed in comic books.I strode towards where the man sat, my face shadowed with tension and anxiety. I touched the table and darted my eyes around nervously. The soft lights reflected on the table. Most of the people seated around had their attention on me. I swallowed hard and wasn't even aware of when I began chewing my fingernails.“Miss, may I get you something?”I jerked as the voice startled me, then calmed when I saw that it was just the waiter, standing there with a notepad in his hand. He adjusted his black bowtie which had shifted to the side and smoothed out his shirt before handing the menu to me.I took it with slightly trembling hands and glanced at the top part.“Chocolate dessert.”“Just that?”“Yes.” I mumbled, before lowering myself to settle
