I leaned closer to the door and she stopped talking on the phone. I moved away from the door. Who was I kidding? Some werewolves actually had sharp senses and could know when someone else was around them. They could easily pick up the scent.

“What's it about the Ruby girl?” Her caller on the other end asked.

“Hold on a sec,” June murmured and walked towards the door.

I pressed my back against the wall and tried hard to steady my uneasy breathing as she opened the door and looked both ways.

The sex ended and it was good. Ruby was on the bed, shivering slightly from the effect. It was an euphoric feeling that she couldn't quite describe. Malcolm brought her closer to him and allowed her to relax in his arms.He kissed her softly on the cheeks. Ruby faced him. “Did you really mean what you said? You don't find my body offensive?”“Why would I do that? You have a gorgeous body that any man who has you is lucky. You have those curves that only some girls can dream to have.”“What about the little fat on my belly?”Malcolm frowned. “Isn't that a normal thing? Ruby, you shouldn't be concerned about all these sorts of things. Believe me when I say that you're perfect.”Ruby smiled and nestled in Malcolm's arms on his chest. He ran his hand gently and slowly through her silky hair. He didn't say anything and she didn't say anything either. She was thinking of how good it had felt. She was also thinking about her new identity as a hybrid werewolf witch. It felt so comfortable in

Ruby was discharged that night. She was given a list of medications that will help to keep her stable and sound. She got them from the hospital and walked outside with Malcolm supporting her even though she didn't really need support while walking.Malcolm drove the car, while she sat adjacent to him in the front seat.“I didn't know it was that bad.” Malcolm said as he lowered the volume of his music. “The relationship with your mum. I didn't know it was so bad.”Ruby forced an awkward smile. “It's nothing. I've finally made peace with the fact that she hates me.”“You're special. You shouldn't let anyone make you feel otherwise.”The drive home was quiet and music played from the car stereo. It was soft music that soothed Ruby's mind. She leaned her back against the chair and listened. She wasn't aware when she fell asleep.Malcolm continued driving and reduced the volume of the music playing as he didn't want to disturb her. He was sure that she was exhausted from the stay at the h

Ruby was awake. The nurse called Malcolm to tell him about it. He entered the room. She was still acting drowsy and confused. Malcolm stood by the side while the nurse adjusted the oxygen mask.Ruby placed her left palm on her forehead.“Malcolm,” she called out in a weak voice. The nurse cleared from the path, giving him space and a go ahead that he could go closer to her. He bent and held her hand.“Ruby, I'm so happy you're awake.”His hand felt warm. Ruby looked around the room like she was just realizing that she was in a hospital.“What happened? I don't feel so good.”“You fainted.” Malcolm said as he lowered his voice. “I was worried sick for you to wake up.”Ruby adjusted herself on the bed and sat upright. She still had a feeling in her head like she was spinning while she was seated in one place. She held Malcolm's hand.“Andrew came, your colleague from work. He said I should let him know when you're awake. Will you like to speak to him now?”Ruby shook her head. “Later.”

Ruby fell on the floor. Her eyes were still partly open. Andrew rushed to her side, trying to hold her to be stable.“Ruby! Ruby! What's wrong?”“I don't feel…” she said weakly before she finally closed her eyes.Andrew shook her. He was scared of what might have happened to her. Linda came over to Ruby's side, abandoning the client who was currently shopping.“I'd call the ambulance. Remain by her side.” Linda said. She stood up and grabbed the office phone then put up a call.Andrew was still squatted by Ruby's side, holding her. There were beads of sweat around his forehead. He was honestly worried about what may have happened. He turned her but she wasn't having a fever. Her body was warm like nothing wrong was going on. Only that her eyes were closed and she was now unconscious. The ambulance soon arrived. The health worker carried her in a stroller into the ambulance. Andrew followed them and explained what had happened to her, that they had just been talking when she fell down.

Ruby's POVI picked out a plain green dress for work, the one with the small pockets at the hip that made carrying my phone around easier when I didn't want to deal with a bag all day. Joey didn't comment on it this time, which I took as approval.I tied my hair back, grabbed my keys off the dresser, and headed downstairs. The driver was already waiting by the car when I came out, and the drive to the museum passed the way it usually did, quiet streets giving way to busier ones, the radio playing low.Linda caught me near the front desk the moment I walked in, my bag still over my shoulder."Everything all right?" she asked."I had a family emergency," I said. "It's handled now."She nodded like that satisfied her completely and didn't push further, which I was grateful for. I made my way to the back office, tucked my bag under the desk, and got the cataloguing log open before Andrew found me."You're back," he said, leaning against the doorframe."I'm back.""You were away for two da

Ruby's POVI worked past dinner without noticing it had passed. The base layer dried enough by then for me to start building on top of it, and once I started, time stopped mattering the way it always did when a piece finally found its shape.I'd settled on a figure standing in water, knee deep in a river that wasn't quite real and wasn't quite imagined, somewhere between the two. I built the riverbed up with the modeling paste first, working in long strokes to suggest current, then pressed thin strips of plastic wrap into the wet surface and peeled them back slowly. The texture it left behind caught the light in broken, shifting patterns, almost like real water moving. For the figure herself I used actual fabric, a scrap of sheer white cotton soaked in diluted paint and pressed into the canvas, letting it dry stiff and folded the way a dress might cling to someone standing in a current. I built her face last with a few careful strokes for the eyes and the line of a jaw, leaving the

It wasn't a college scholarship or anything like that, but it was an invite to an interview as a cleaner at a company. Their pay was quite promising—600 bucks a month, and I only had to work on Saturdays.I felt relieved, knowing that I could support Sandra around the house, now I just had to pass

I froze as I stood in the middle of the road. The car stopped just a few inches away from my knees.“Do you want to get killed?” A man shouted as he came out of the car. “Who runs into the middle of the road?”I steadied myself and crossed over to the pedestrian path. Adrenaline was still surging t

When I opened my eyes, it was pitch black. I wondered if the darkness finally took me, and I was out of existence. The sound of water dripping from the kitchen tap brought me back to the realization that I was still at home. I stood up from the floor, staggering till I reached the light switch and

I was surprised the cake hadn't fallen from my hand yet. Maybe it was because I had ‘fat hands’ that balanced it, or a better reason could be because I used almost my entire savings to buy it for my boyfriend and didn't want it to waste.Adrian sat at the table with my sister, my mother was also th
