Seven Years Later

Kara stood at the front desk, trying to keep her voice from shaking.

“But… I was told to come today,” Her fingers clutched the strap of her bag like it was the only thing holding her up.

The receptionist didn’t even look up right away. When she did, it was with an annoyed sigh. Her smile was forced, eyes tired.

“The job is no longer available,” Her tone was robotic. “If we have another vacancy in the future, we’ll send an email. Do have a nice day.”

Her voice held finality with her eyes drifting to the next person behind Kara. Her posture made it clear that she was done talking.

Kara bit down on her lower lip, trying to stop the tears that were already building up.

“Please... just email me if anything comes up,” she mumbled with hope, turning around before they could see the first tear fall.

She kept walking, head down, heart sinking. As soon as she stepped past the last glass door, she stopped pretending to be strong.

The tears broke free and rolled down her cheeks. She didn’t even bother wiping them away. Her chest felt tight, and her throat ached from holding back sobs.

She managed to walk a short distance before her knees gave out. She crouched near a wall, burying her face in her hands, crying silently. People passed by, some slowing down to look, but she didn’t care.

She wasn’t embarrassed but scared and tired. Scared of hunger. Scared of being homeless, and tired of wondering if she would be sleeping on the street next week.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, stood up after a few minutes, and kept walking. Her heels pinched with every step, so she took them off and held them in one hand. The cold pavement stung her feet, but it still hurt less than everything else.

Seven years outside the orphanage, and nothing to show for it. She had spent the first three years saving every penny just to get a small apartment. And now she was about to lose that too if she didn’t come up with the rent by the end of the month. Two weeks left. No money. No job.

Thinking about it only made her cry more. Every job turned her down. She didn’t have enough work experience, and her one certificate didn’t get her far.

Her phone rang suddenly, pulling her out of her thoughts. She sniffled, brushed her messy hair aside, and dug through her bag to find it.

It was her roommate calling.

She ended the call with a hiss. Lina was the last person she wanted to talk to right now. But the call came in again. And again.

With a frustrated groan, she finally answered.

“Why the hell are you calling me?” she snapped, her voice raw.

“And you think I’m jobless like you to keep calling for fun?” Lina’s voice fired back. “I just paid my part of the rent. The landlady says we’ll be kicked out if you don’t pay…”

Kara hung up.

She didn’t have the strength for her jabs today. The girl never passed up a chance to remind her she was broke. Her words hit harder now, especially when her last hope just shattered before her.

Her eyes blurred again with fresh tears, and her mouth turned downward in frustration. She wasn’t watching where she was going anymore.

A loud screech of tires made her jump and before she could react, the car came to a sharp halt just a few inches in front of her. The shock sent her stumbling backward and falling on her butt.

For a second, she just sat there, stunned by how close it was. But then something inside her snapped. She hated how easy it was to imagine disappearing from this world.

“Just kill me,” she whispered bitterly, slowly lifted her face to the car in front of her.

“Just hit me and drive off! It’s not like anyone will bury me unless my bitch roommate suddenly grows a conscience.”

Her voice cracked as she ranted, “I’ve got no one. Dying will save me from these bills and pain so just press the damn accelerator already!”

Her head dropped.

She didn’t understand what she had done wrong to deserve a life like this. Why had her parents abandoned her at that orphanage? Why had she been left to suffer?

She didn’t notice the car door open, or the footsteps approaching, until a pair of black shoes appeared in front of her.

She looked up slowly. A man stood there, staring at her with a stunned expression. She quickly looked away and wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

“Don’t look at me like that.” Her voice was hoarse, “If you almost hit me and feel guilty, you can skip the pity. I promise my ghost won’t haunt you if you run me over right now.”

“Emilia…” the man almost cut her off.

She looked up again, confused. He had crouched in front of her now, holding her cheeks like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Her brows drew together. He was… weird.

Tall, good-looking, with a face that seemed both shocked and relieved at the same time. He smelled really nice too, like an expensive soap and sin. But there was this undeniable deadly aura about him. That moment, she forgot she was crying.

Before she could say anything, he pulled her into a hug.

She gasped. “Hey! What…”

“I found you,” he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. He was hugging her too closely as if she was a treasure. She was too stunned to move.

She stepped out of her room after taking a moment to compose herself. She had made sure not to look broken, even though her insides still felt like they were crumbling. When she got to the dining room, it was empty. For a second she thought maybe she had come down too late, but then the sound of clattering from the kitchen caught her ears. She followed the noise and found Brie cooking.Brie turned when she felt someone behind her and gave a smile. “I thought you weren’t coming out anymore. I had to start preparing for dinner.”She managed to forced a small nod and pulled out a chair, sitting quietly. “I will just watch you while you cook,” she said softly, her fingers playing with the edge of the table.Brie continued placing ingredients on the counter. Her eyes drifted to the counter, noticing that the ingredients laid out weren’t the usual ones she was used to seeing.“What are you making?” she asked before she could stop herself.“Vegan cassoulet. It’s Luci’s favorite.”She raised

His jaw tightened but still forced a nod, the word scraping past his throat. “Yeah.”It was barely a breath. His hands rubbed along her arms slowly, trying to soothe her, but it was more for him than for her. There was no warmth in her eyes. Only resolve. Cold and steady. The flowers in his hand suddenly felt heavy and useless. She didn’t reach for them, she knew this wasn’t an apology. He hadn’t brought them as a man begging for forgiveness. He had brought them because he thought she would accept them and, like a fool, melt back into him.He sighed, turning away to set the flowers on her bedside table, pretending his gift not being appreciated didn’t cut him.“I brought your phone.” he added. She watched as he placed the phone beside the flowers, relief rushed through her chest but it didn’t stop her from staring at him more intently. Why hadn’t he mentioned it yet?“When are we leaving?” she finally asked, crossing her arms. He stepped closer to hold her hands again, rubbing his thu

The moment Jairo saw her, everything inside him shifted. It was like breathing after being drowned for days. That was the peace she gave him. The sight of her sitting there, small and quiet, made his chest ache in a way he couldn’t explain. His eyes flicked around, noting the empty room. Without a second thought, his strides turned into a small run. He reached her at the dining table and cupped her face, the flowers still clutched in his other hand. Before Kara could even gasp, his lips claimed hers. The sweetness of her taste made his stomach clench with a sharp, almost painful need. She froze, startled by the suddenness of it. Her chin tilted up high under his hold, her lips trapped beneath his hunger.“Where’s your room?” he asked urgently. She blinked at him, dazed, unsure if she heard him right. He repeated himself and that made her gulped, then she whispered the direction. That was all he needed. He didn’t waste another second. He lifted her into his arms, carrying her toward he

For days, Jairo didn’t return to the house. His focus was split between handling his shipment and investigating Mateo’s sponsors. He refused to rest, even though his body was still healing. Donald had told him Kara was barely eating, that she spent most of her days locked away, her strength slipping little by little. At the news, Jairo’s heart clenched. He hated that she was hurting herself again. He knew her well enough to know that her stubbornness was only a mask. Beneath it, she was fragile, breakable in ways she would never admit out loud.He wanted to see her, to tell her to stop doing this to herself, but he stayed away. His wounds were still fresh and he didn’t want her to see him hurt. So instead, he gave instructions to Brie and Smith to watch her closely, make sure she was okay.Meanwhile, at the hospital, Luci was improving steadily. Each day she looked stronger, though her walls against Jairo remained as high as ever...At the house, Kara sat at the dining table, stari

She lay on the bed with her eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling without moving. The morning sun had already filled the room with light but she didn’t have the strength to get up. Her body was still, but her mind was anything but. Her thoughts kept spinning, circling back to last night’s news. She concluded that she wasn't safe with him, recalling how the real Emilia was kidnapped. She was afraid that something bad might happen to her as well.A knock suddenly came on the door. She didn’t answer.“It’s Brie,” She still didn’t move. The knock kept coming and she was forced to cover her ears with the pillows. She just wanted silence, peace from everything clawing at her. But the knocking didn’t stop, it only grew more insistent. Finally, not wanting to cause a panic, she dragged herself up and opened the door. “I want to be alone.” her voice came out loud, a little sharp. Brie stood there, pulling something close.“I came to give you this,” she said softly, shifting her briefcases t

Kara stepped into the house, still sniffling, wiping at her damp cheeks with the back of her hand. She stopped her in her tracks, noticing the tension that filled the air.An older woman stood in the middle of the room, her apron still on, tears running down her face. Beside her, a tall man, probably the butler, was trying his best to calm her, his hand gently patting her arms. At the sound of the door, they both turned their gazes to her. Her body stiffened under their stares. Before she could even open her mouth, a guard in dark shades appeared from behind.“Il signor Vitale la portò.” his voice clipped and commanding.[Mr. Vitale brought her.]Kara’s head turned toward him quickly, noticing his thick Italian accent. His tone was so firm that the two immediately seemed to relax a little, as if the simple statement explained everything. He left just as quickly, leaving Kara with the strangers.“Entra, signora,” the butler said, stepping closer politely. She lifted her hand awkwardl
