Seven Years Later

Kara stood at the front desk, trying to keep her voice from shaking.

“But… I was told to come today,” Her fingers clutched the strap of her bag like it was the only thing holding her up.

The receptionist didn’t even look up right away. When she did, it was with an annoyed sigh. Her smile was forced, eyes tired.

“The job is no longer available,” Her tone was robotic. “If we have another vacancy in the future, we’ll send an email. Do have a nice day.”

Her voice held finality with her eyes drifting to the next person behind Kara. Her posture made it clear that she was done talking.

Kara bit down on her lower lip, trying to stop the tears that were already building up.

“Please... just email me if anything comes up,” she mumbled with hope, turning around before they could see the first tear fall.

She kept walking, head down, heart sinking. As soon as she stepped past the last glass door, she stopped pretending to be strong.

The tears broke free and rolled down her cheeks. She didn’t even bother wiping them away. Her chest felt tight, and her throat ached from holding back sobs.

She managed to walk a short distance before her knees gave out. She crouched near a wall, burying her face in her hands, crying silently. People passed by, some slowing down to look, but she didn’t care.

She wasn’t embarrassed but scared and tired. Scared of hunger. Scared of being homeless, and tired of wondering if she would be sleeping on the street next week.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, stood up after a few minutes, and kept walking. Her heels pinched with every step, so she took them off and held them in one hand. The cold pavement stung her feet, but it still hurt less than everything else.

Seven years outside the orphanage, and nothing to show for it. She had spent the first three years saving every penny just to get a small apartment. And now she was about to lose that too if she didn’t come up with the rent by the end of the month. Two weeks left. No money. No job.

Thinking about it only made her cry more. Every job turned her down. She didn’t have enough work experience, and her one certificate didn’t get her far.

Her phone rang suddenly, pulling her out of her thoughts. She sniffled, brushed her messy hair aside, and dug through her bag to find it.

It was her roommate calling.

She ended the call with a hiss. Lina was the last person she wanted to talk to right now. But the call came in again. And again.

With a frustrated groan, she finally answered.

“Why the hell are you calling me?” she snapped, her voice raw.

“And you think I’m jobless like you to keep calling for fun?” Lina’s voice fired back. “I just paid my part of the rent. The landlady says we’ll be kicked out if you don’t pay…”

Kara hung up.

She didn’t have the strength for her jabs today. The girl never passed up a chance to remind her she was broke. Her words hit harder now, especially when her last hope just shattered before her.

Her eyes blurred again with fresh tears, and her mouth turned downward in frustration. She wasn’t watching where she was going anymore.

A loud screech of tires made her jump and before she could react, the car came to a sharp halt just a few inches in front of her. The shock sent her stumbling backward and falling on her butt.

For a second, she just sat there, stunned by how close it was. But then something inside her snapped. She hated how easy it was to imagine disappearing from this world.

“Just kill me,” she whispered bitterly, slowly lifted her face to the car in front of her.

“Just hit me and drive off! It’s not like anyone will bury me unless my bitch roommate suddenly grows a conscience.”

Her voice cracked as she ranted, “I’ve got no one. Dying will save me from these bills and pain so just press the damn accelerator already!”

Her head dropped.

She didn’t understand what she had done wrong to deserve a life like this. Why had her parents abandoned her at that orphanage? Why had she been left to suffer?

She didn’t notice the car door open, or the footsteps approaching, until a pair of black shoes appeared in front of her.

She looked up slowly. A man stood there, staring at her with a stunned expression. She quickly looked away and wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

“Don’t look at me like that.” Her voice was hoarse, “If you almost hit me and feel guilty, you can skip the pity. I promise my ghost won’t haunt you if you run me over right now.”

“Emilia…” the man almost cut her off.

She looked up again, confused. He had crouched in front of her now, holding her cheeks like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Her brows drew together. He was… weird.

Tall, good-looking, with a face that seemed both shocked and relieved at the same time. He smelled really nice too, like an expensive soap and sin. But there was this undeniable deadly aura about him. That moment, she forgot she was crying.

Before she could say anything, he pulled her into a hug.

She gasped. “Hey! What…”

“I found you,” he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. He was hugging her too closely as if she was a treasure. She was too stunned to move.

Alejandro drove her to school as usual. She kept looking out the window the whole time, but her mind was not on the road or the buildings they were passing. She kept thinking about the night before. Especially the way he had almost kissed her but didn’t.She didn’t understand why that moment kept replaying in her head. What annoyed her even more was his behavior this morning. He was acting completely normal, like nothing had happened. As if last night was just another normal evening. She was starting to get frustrated. How can he just act like nothing happened? she thought. Is he pretending, or did that moment mean nothing to him?The car stopped in front of the school gate.“We’re here,” he said calmly. She nodded and opened the door. “Thank you.”“Have a good day,” he offered with a smile. She looked at him for a second, like she wanted to say something, but she didn’t. She just nodded and stepped out of the car.She watched as he drove away, then she huffed, adjusting her bag on he

She arrived at the agency as usual. She greeted a few of the girls and went straight to the assessment room where they always checked their weight and measurements at the start of the week. But the moment she stepped inside, she knew something was off. Victoria and a familiar staff were usually the one in charge of assessments, but she wasn’t there. Instead, another staff stood near the scale with a clipboard in her hand, her expression cold and unreadable. She frowned slightly but didn’t say anything. She stepped onto the scale when she was told to. The staff looked at the number, then wrote something down.“You gained one kilogram over the weekend,” she said sharply.Kara blinked in surprise. “One kilogram?”The staff looked at her like she had committed a serious crime. “As if you don't know how you ate over the weekend. This is the second assessment period and you're already struggling with discipline.”She was confused. She hadn't even had breakfast yet. “I followed my diet…”“Cl

Emilia was already awake as Kara stepped out of the closet. She was sitting up in bed, her back against the headboard, hands resting in her lap. She looked tired but present, which was better than yesterday.“Hey, morning gorgeous,” Kara greeted with enthusiasm.“Morning.” she replied slowly, wanting to reach for the glance of water but Kara had immediately stepped forward and helped her with it."How do you feel?" she asked.Emilia drank the whole water before dropping the cup on the nightstand.“I feel sore.” she replied, “Mostly in my head. Like I cried for long.”"You were shaking more than crying," Kara said gently. She opened the medication, tipped the tablets into her palm, and held them out. Emilia took them without argument and washed them down with the water."Kara.""Hm?""When are we going to meet our family?” she kept her eyes on her hands. She doesn't understand where that feeling was coming from. She wishes to meet them and she can't ignore that feeling.Kara looked at

Luci sat on her desk, working on her school assignments. The house had gone quiet, and her mind kept replaying what happened downstairs with Emilia. The fear on her face, and the sound of it. It had shaken her more than she wanted to admit. She sighed, trying to focus back on her assignments when Ann called her. She answered before the second ring, standing up and going to lay on the bed. The call was about Ann leaving soon, they both expressed themselves before the call ended with Luci feeling sad. She closed her eyes briefly, her arms stretched out with the phone screen on. She kept thinking about how many things were changing around her.Just then, there was a knock on her door. She remained there for a second longer before pushing herself up sluggishly and went to open the door.Alejandro stood there. Her heart skipped. Her brows shot up in surprise, covering up her expression.“It's late. What are you…” she began, but before she could continue, he gently placed a finger on her

It was the weekend, and the training room was quieter than usual.Kara and Luci stood facing each other, both slightly out of breath after a round of practice. Sweat clung lightly to their skin, and the cool air in the room helped ease the heat.Luci tilted her head as she looked at Kara, her eyes scanning her from head to toe.“You’re getting more beautiful,” she said casually.Kara blinked, caught off guard. “What?”“I’m serious. You were already pretty, but now… it’s different.”Kara felt heat rise to her cheeks. She looked away, pretending to adjust her gloves. “You’re just saying that.”“I mean it. Something about you is different. It suits you."She felt the warmth move up her neck before she could stop it. She looked away under the pretense of adjusting her position, and Luci watched the blush with open amusement."Don't get shy. I'm complimenting you.""I know. Thank you." she cleared her throat. "Can we keep going?""In a second." Luci sat down on the grass without ceremony,

“Is he Luci's boyfriend?”He didn't know why he asked that. His neice had suddenly stopped dressing flamboyantly, and she had been mentioning that name in anything he asks her. He recalled that he was the one who helped her get information about Edward. There was a short silence on the line before Edward answered, unsure. “I don’t know. But he’s always the one telling her things… like about me. That’s how we started talking more.”He leaned back, his thoughts sharpening. Boys are distractions and he didn't want such distraction for her.“All right. Focus on your studies.” “I will,” Edward replied obediently.“I will let you know when we’re coming.”“Okay, sir.”He ended the call, lowering the phone slowly. His expression turned thoughtful again. Then he sighed, picked up his pen and returned to the papers in front of him...Marco Vescari entered the room first. He was a measured man, older than his last son by thirty years but nothing like him in temperament. He moved and Stuart fo

“We found this!” the guard’s voice cracked sharply through the tensed silence and Salvatore spun around.Luci’s heart slammed against her ribcage when she heard the voice. Even though she was relieved that Salvatore’s attention shifted away from her, fear still clawed at her stomach. The guard was

Luci stirred with a soft groan, her brows knitting together as a dull ache pulsed through her wrist. The room smelled like antiseptic and clean sheets.
