Chapter 2

Author: Fox
Nick froze mid-drag on his cigarette.

The whole room went dead silent.

One of Nick's friends was the first to react, forcing out an awkward laugh. "Ella, Nick's just messing with you. Don't take it seriously."

"A bet's a bet." My voice was flat, without a ripple of emotion.

Nick took a deep pull on his cigarette, then strode over to me, shrugging with forced casualness. "You're right, Ella. A bet's a bet."

He glanced at the man beside me, reached over and clapped him on the shoulder, his tone flippant. "Take good care of her."

I turned and walked out on the man's arm. Behind me, the room erupted.

"Nick, Ella's not going to actually go through with it, is she?"

"Shouldn't you go after her? If something actually happens, you'll regret it!"

No matter what his friends said, Nick's lips stayed curved in that same unshakable smirk. "Relax. She's just trying to get a rise out of me. I'll bet you anything she'll send him away the second she's out the door."

I had no idea where Nick's confidence came from.

Maybe it was my five years of unwavering devotion. Or maybe he was that certain about my supposed obsession with fidelity.

None of it mattered to me anymore.

Because not only did I not send the man away, I took him straight to a hotel.

"What's your name?" I let go of his arm and turned to face him.

"Ethan Taylor."

I took a closer look at Ethan.

He didn't look very old, probably mid-twenties. He wore a simple black T-shirt that couldn't hide the solid, well-defined muscles underneath.

His features were strikingly sculpted, and his light-brown eyes were so clean they reminded me of early morning sunlight, carrying a touch of youthful innocence.

"You're young. Why sell yourself for money?"

Ethan didn't answer. He just lowered his gaze, his lashes casting a faint shadow beneath his eyes.

I didn't push it. I was about to say something when my phone buzzed. It was my father.

"Ella, when are you bringing your husband home to meet us?"

My grip tightened on the phone.

For five years, I'd tried countless times to bring Nick home to meet my parents, but he always had some excuse. Too busy with work, social obligations, bad timing...

Only then did it hit me that perhaps he'd never intended to meet my parents or become part of my family.

When I didn't respond, my father's tone turned cold. "Did you make the whole thing up just to avoid the arranged marriage? I'm warning you: if you're not really married, you're coming home to marry whoever I choose. Otherwise, you won't see one cent of the Gomez family's multibillion-dollar fortune!"

I didn't want an arranged marriage, but now Nick and I were getting divorced...

My gaze drifted to Ethan, and an idea suddenly took shape.

"I'll bring my husband home in three days."

I hung up and turned to Ethan, getting straight to the point. "Marry me."

Ethan's head snapped up, a flash of surprise in his light-brown eyes. "What did you say?"

"Don't worry. I'll pay you. I'm not asking you to do this for free."

I expected him to refuse. The idea was absurd, after all.

But the next second, Ethan nodded. "Okay."

Married life was a sweet dream that never ended.Ethan and I settled into a blissfully shameless life together, spending our days wrapped up in each other and finding new ways to have fun.Until two years later, when the butler handed me a letter from prison.I didn't even glance at it. I walked to the fireplace and tossed it into the flames.Ethan came over with a coffee, wrapping his arms around me from behind. "Not going to read it?""Why bother? It's nothing but remorse that came too late. Love that arrives after the damage is done isn't worth a damn. I won't waste my time on it."Ethan chuckled, the sound vibrating through his chest against my back.He turned me around, cupped my face, and kissed me, tender and fierce all at once.I gagged. The instant he leaned in, nausea surged through me.I shoved him away and clapped a hand over my mouth, gagging. The laughter vanished from Ethan's face. He steadied me, his eyes sharp with worry. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"He called t

Nick had not even made it through the front gate when a line of bodyguards in black closed in around him."Sir, Mrs. Taylor is having breakfast with Mr. Taylor. She has instructed us that she will not be seeing any uninvited guests today. Please leave immediately, or we will have to remove you by force."Nick snarled, "I'm Ella's ex-husband! Let me see her! She must be angry with me. I need to see her!"He wrenched himself free with all his strength and stumbled toward the window.Through the glass, he saw me."Ella, come out and talk to me! Let's remarry, right now!""Open up." Ethan held a peeled grape to my lips, his voice soft.I smiled and opened my mouth, then glanced out the window at Nick. His face was chalk-white.He kept shouting. "Ella, I was wrong! Come out and talk to me. Can't we just talk?""Ella, I love you! I can't lose you!""...""So noisy." I raised my hand and drew the heavy blackout curtain shut. Then I dangled the key in front of Ethan. "Go take out the trash. Do

(Ella’s POV)The morning after the wedding, I tried to move, but my whole body felt as if it had been run over repeatedly by a truck. I hissed at the soreness."Good morning, baby."A warm, gentle kiss landed on my forehead.I looked at Ethan beside me, huffed, and turned my face away."Still mad?" Ethan wrapped his arms around me from behind, his warm breath brushing my neck. "I was wrong. I've learned my lesson, okay?""What exactly did you do wrong?" I asked coldly. My voice came out raspy, still wrecked from the night before."I shouldn't have been so insatiable. My baby can't even get out of bed because of me." He nuzzled the back of my neck, indulgent amusement warming his voice.I reached back and swatted his wandering hand away. "You're a jerk. Don't touch me."Ethan didn't get mad. He just chuckled, caught my hand, and pressed a kiss to my fingers. His tone turned slightly sheepish. "Alright, fine. I shouldn't have hidden who I really am."That did it. I rolled over and grabbe

"Bride? What bride? I'm Ella's husband!"Nick roared into the phone, his voice twisted with shock and fury.A beat of silence followed. Then a voice thick with disgust said, "Are you insane?"The line went dead.Nick stood frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear even though the call had already ended. When he finally snapped out of it, he bolted for the door.Selena rushed to block him. "Nick, where are you going?""My funds need Ella's authorization, but she's getting married! I have to find her!""Nick!" Selena shrieked, grabbing his arm with both hands. "Calm down! You know what kind of person Ella is. She's obsessed with you. There's no way she'd just up and marry someone else. This is obviously a trick!"Nick stopped dead in his tracks. She was right. Ella loved him enough to die for him. There was no way she'd marry another man just days after their divorce. It didn't make sense."She's waiting for me." The panic in Nick's eyes faded, replaced by that unshakable self-assurance

(Third person’s POV)Over the next few days, Ella seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. Not even a single text.Nick sat in his oversized leather office chair, fingers tapping the desk in agitation. This was completely outside his expectations. In the past five years, Ella had never gone more than six hours without reaching out to him.Whenever he gave her the slightest cold shoulder, she would come running, desperate to win him back and trying every trick she knew. She's giving me the silent treatment. She's trying to make me give in first. He knew Ella too well. This push-and-pull act was nothing but a woman's ploy for more attention."Nick."Just then, Selena walked in wearing a low-cut bodycon dress and heels, her hips swaying with every step."This is the new energy project proposal I mentioned the other day."She set the folder on his desk and leaned closer. "I hear the Gomez family is investing in this project too. If you get in on it, you'll make a fortune."At the

I stared at the screen and scoffed, then blocked his number.Minutes later, Nick stormed back in, his face thunderous. His eyes, burning with anger, locked onto me. "Ella..."He said my name, but before he could finish, Selena suddenly clutched her chest. "Nick, I'm not feeling well. I want to go home and rest."Nick swallowed whatever he had been about to say and wrapped an arm around Selena. "What's wrong? Why do you suddenly feel sick? Come on, let's go to the hospital."He didn't so much as glance at me before rushing out with her.I watched them disappear and felt nothing but calm.At the same time, the airline sent me a reminder about my flight in two days. That's when I remembered my passport was still at the house."Ethan, I need to go home for my passport. You should head back and pack too. You're coming with me in two days.""Okay."Ethan dropped me off at home and left.I packed a bag, grabbed my passport, and was heading out when Nick came back with Selena. When he saw me,
