DAMIEN’S POV

I stood on the cool stone balcony, my eyes fixed on Ethan with dark, burning rage. My large hand was clenched tight, my knuckles turning pure white as I stared down at the simple human standing right in front of me.

"She doesn't belong to you," Ethan stated without fear of his status. He held Ava's small arm gently in his hands, pulling her further behind his back so my body could not touch her. He spoke those bold words with a flat, steady voice, looking straight into my dark eye

DAMIEN'S POVI stood by the window for a few minutes. My hands were still shaking, so I pressed them flat against the cold glass until they stopped. Then I fixed my tie, took a deep breath, and walked back down the stairs. They were still at the table. Ethan was cutting a piece of meat for Lucas. Ava sat beside him with her arms crossed. Nobody was eating. When I walked in, all three of them looked up.I did not sit down. I stood behind my chair and kept my voice calm."Ethan, I am sorry I left so fast. I had a work call." It was a lie, and everyone knew it. "I have more questions for you. I also have a few things to show you around the estate. It is too late to talk about it all tonight. I would like you to stay the night.""We are not staying," Ava said at once. She stood up from her chair. "I told you this morning, Damien. I want to leave today. I have my bags ready.""You agreed to let him stay," I said."I agreed to let him come. I did not agree to sleep here."I looked at Ethan.

DAMIEN'S POVI told the head cook to prepare a banquet. I wanted the long dining table full. I wanted roast meat, fresh bread, soup, fruit, and the best wine from my cellar. I wanted Ethan to see that I had nothing to hide. The cook looked at me like I was crazy. I never held dinners for guests, and I never held them for humans. But he bowed and ran to the kitchen.Selene found me in the hall an hour later. She wore a pale blue coat and held her purse in her hand."I heard about the dinner," she said. "I want no part of it.""Fine," I said."I have a spa date with my friends. We booked it weeks ago." She looked at me for a long moment. "Try not to start a war at the table, Damien."She walked out, and I heard her car leave the front yard. I was glad. I did not want her smile near me today. At six o'clock, the dining room was ready. The candles were lit, and the silver plates shone. I sat at the head of the table. Ethan sat on my right side. Ava came in last, with Lucas holding her han

DAMIEN'S POVImpossible. There was no way I was going to let her go like this. Not now. I had searched for her for years. I had looked in every city and asked every man who owed me a favor. Now she was standing in my own dining room with her bags at her feet, telling me goodbye like I was a stranger."This is ridiculous, Ava," I said. My voice was hard. "Take your bags and go back to your room. Now.""No," Ava said."I am not asking.""I am not going back," she said. She did not move. "You can order your guards all you want. I am done."I took a step toward her. "Ava, you are tired. You do not know what you are saying. Go upstairs and rest, and we will talk later.""I said no, Damien."Before I could speak again, Selene walked forward. She stood beside Ava like they were old friends. Her face looked soft and kind, but I knew her. This was not kindness."Let her speak, Damien," Selene said. "She

DAMIEN'S POVI woke up before the sun the next morning. I did what I always did. I took a cold shower, put on my suit, and read the reports from the night guards. Nothing looked wrong in the reports, but my chest felt tight. Ava's words from yesterday were still in my head. In three days. I told myself it was only a bluff. I told myself again and again.I walked down to the dining room. Selene was already sitting at the table. She wore a soft cream dress, and her hair was tied back neatly. She said good morning in a small voice, and I gave her a short nod. Then I sat down.A maid put a plate of eggs and toast in front of me. I picked up my fork and began to eat.Nobody spoke. The only sounds were the clink of forks and the tick of the clock on the wall. I felt something on my face, so I looked up. Selene was watching me. She did not blink. She did not smile. She just stared at me with a blank face, like she was trying to read a book written in a language she did not know."What?" I as

AVA'S POVI stood in my room and did not move. My hands were cold. Selene was looking at me with her flat eyes, and the room felt very small. She had asked me this before. It was many days ago, and now she was asking again, and this time she was not smiling."Do you like Damien?" she said once more.I took a slow breath. I made my face stay still."No," I said. "I do not like him, Selene. I have told you many times."The word came out clear and steady. But inside me, something burned.I remembered the barn. I remembered the night and the smell of hay. I remembered his big hands on my waist and how he pulled me close. I remembered his lips, and how my heart beat so fast that I could not think. It was only one kiss. But as I stood there, I felt like a liar. I felt dirty, like I was hiding a secret under my bed. I hated that I still remembered it. I hated that my cheeks felt warm.Selene did not look away. She took one step closer."If you do not like him," she said, "then why are you st

AVA'S POVI stood on the shiny floor of the mall with my hands in tight fists. My face was hot. Marcus stood in front of me with his arms crossed, and he did not move."Step out of my way, Marcus," I said."I cannot, Miss Ava," he said. His voice was flat. "Sir Damien gave me orders. You are not to talk to anyone from your old life."I laughed, but it was not a happy laugh. "Krystal is my workmate. We worked the same shifts at the bar for years. She is not a bad person.""My orders do not change.""You are not my bodyguard," I said, pointing at his chest. "You have no right to decide who I talk to. I am not a prisoner, Marcus. I am a free woman."He did not even blink. He looked at me like I was a child who was having a bad day."My loyalty is to Damien," he said. Before I could say more, Krystal stepped between us. She put her hands on her hips and lifted her chin. She looked very small next to Marcus, but she did not seem to care."Hey!" she said. "What is your problem? Why are you
