Chapter 1

I pushed open the heavy glass doors of the Silvermoon Ridge headquarters, blocking out the sight of Rowan’s careless face.

My phone buzzed in my palm. A video call from my childhood friend, Jax.

The second I answered, his sharp eyes locked onto my wrist.

“Where’s the bracelet? Caleb, did you take off your bond bracelet?” His face changed instantly. He shot upright. “You’re ending twenty years together because she forgot to bring you a rock?”

I stood on the marble steps, looking up at the gray sky. I didn't look away from his glare.

“It’s not about one rock, Jax.” My voice was quiet. Empty. “It’s about the seventeenth time.”

“What seventeenth time?” Jax was lost.

“Rowan’s been Alpha Female for exactly three months,” I said, walking slowly down the steps. “In those three months, this is the seventeenth time she’s broken a promise to me.”

Jax opened his mouth, trying to find an excuse for her. “She just took over a new territory, she’s got too much on her plate, maybe she just can’t keep up…”

“She was in the mining territory for seven days,” I cut him off. My voice was cold. “Even the patrol guards got expensive liquor. But she forgot the one thing I needed to survive. The Moonstone. Completely. Her excuse? ‘Too busy.’”

I pulled my car door open and slid into the driver’s seat, fixing the phone to its mount.

“If that was it, maybe I could lie to myself a little longer.” I stared straight into the camera. “But then I saw Finn’s social media.”

Finn. The Omega scribe she’d taken on three months ago.

“Remember March 21st?” I asked.

Jax’s brow furrowed. “Of course! You nearly burned out your Alpha instincts securing her new territory. You were in the med-bay for a whole day. You almost died!”

“Right.” I held up my right hand. The dark red scar on my palm from the feral agony was still an ugly mark. “I was freezing. The pain was blinding. I only asked her to bring back some healing elixir.”

I paused, looking right into Jax’s eyes.

“She didn’t get back until late. She reeked of alcohol. She patted my shoulder and just said, ‘Sorry, drank too much at the celebration feast. I forgot.’”

Jax clenched his jaw, his eyes darting away for a second. “Maybe she was just really drunk…”

“That same night, Finn posted an update.” I swiped open my tablet and shared the screenshot. “‘Feeling a little down today, but the most powerful Alpha Female in the world brought me the most precious elixir herself.’ And the picture? It was Rowan’s hand, passing the vial to him.”

Through the phone, I heard Jax suck in a sharp breath.

The shock in his eyes turned to pure rage.

“I’m not done.” I didn’t give him a second to breathe. I just kept ripping open the wounds.

“April 7th. I was up all night negotiating the mineral contracts with those old foxes. My stomach was cramping so bad I was in a cold sweat. I texted her, told her I was starving, asked if she could bring something back.”

My voice was terrifyingly steady.

“I waited until 3 AM. All I got was the sight of her back, fast asleep in our bed.”

“The next day, she told me she was exhausted from comforting a frightened Omega all night. She just didn’t have the energy to think about me.”

Jax’s breathing got heavy, his chest rising and falling fast. He stared at the screen. “Where was Finn that night?”

“At the city’s most exclusive steakhouse.” A cold, humorless smile touched my lips. “His caption was: ‘This is what it feels like to be the Alpha Female’s favorite. No matter how late, she’ll always take you to get the best food.’”

Thump!

A dull thud came through the speaker.

Jax had slammed his fist into his steering wheel.

“She’s lost her mind! What kind of spell did that Omega put on her? She loves you, Caleb! How could she do this to you?!” Jax’s eyes were red. His voice trembled with pain. "You crushed your own Alpha nature for her! You bled for her throne! What does she think you are?!"

“A tool,” I said, laying the bloody truth bare. “One that doesn’t need maintenance and will never leave her. In her mind, I’m too strong. Unbreakable. But that Omega… he’s the weak one who needs her Alpha protection.”

Just a little while ago, faced with that necklace made of raw Moonstone, Rowan told me she was too busy. Then she turned around and commented on Finn’s post: “You deserve it.”

In that moment, all my resentment, all my hurt, just turned to dust.

“Don’t try to change my mind, Jax.” I looked at him, my gaze clear and rational. The storm inside me was gone. “I see everything clearly now.”

Jax was silent for a long time. When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse but firm. “Okay. Whatever you decide, I’m with you, brother. What’s your next move?”

I clicked my seatbelt into place.

“I’m going to Blackpeak. Flight’s in two days.”

Jax’s head snapped up, his face a mask of shock. “You’re going to the Blackpeak Pack? Marcus invited you seven times, and you’re finally saying yes?!”

“Yes,” I confirmed.

“Does… does Rowan know you’re going to Blackpeak?” Jax’s tone turned serious.

“Not yet.” I started the engine. The car let out a low growl.

“How are you going to tell her?” he pressed, his eyes locked on me. “A text? A letter?”

I floored it, my eyes fixed on the cold road ahead.

“I’m going back to the estate tonight to wait for her.” I gripped the steering wheel, the veins on the back of my hand standing out. “I’m going to settle the score for the last three months, to her face. And then I’m ending it. For good.”

Caleb's POVA year later, I returned to my home city as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. I was hosting the North American Werewolf Alliance summit, titled "Echoes of Self."The spotlight was on me at the podium. A sea of reporters pointed their cameras my way."Alpha Caleb, a year ago you chose to leave Silvermoon Ridge. Now you return as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. How does it feel?"I held the microphone, my voice steady. "I don't regret the chances I gave up for a mate. But if I could do it all over again, I would have learned to love myself first, a lot sooner."A murmur of approval went through the crowd. After the interviews, I made my way through the throng, heading for the lounge. At a corner, I stopped.A figure in a dark trench coat stood silently in the shadows.Rowan.She was even thinner than a year ago. Pale, with a permanent exhaustion in her eyes. She saw me and her body went rigid."It's been a long time," I said first. She looked up, meeting my eyes from a few feet away. I

Caleb's POVAfter Rowan went back to Silvermoon Ridge, she was a different person.Jax told me later that she’d had three major lapses in judgment during core pack meetings. The Alpha Female's mental instability, a direct result of the broken bond, almost tanked a major mining deal. The core warriors started talking. Whispering that their Alpha wasn't right.Someone would glance at her wrist, where the bond bracelet used to be. It was empty now.During a meal, she ordered a plate of roasted venison, but when it came, she just stared at it, not taking a single bite.If someone even mentioned the name "Blackpeak," her face would go pale and she'd make an excuse to leave the room.Jax said that after Finn was exiled, he became desperate. He cornered her outside her office and demanded to know why she was blaming him."I didn't force you to forget his anniversary! Why am I taking all the heat for this?" Finn had shouted, his voice full of resentment.Rowan was silent for a long time. Final

Caleb's POVThe lights in the conference room were blinding. The applause was loud enough to shake the building."Project Fission. The most perfect western expansion plan in history." Marcus stood up, his voice filled with undisguised pride. "The representatives from all three neutral territories signed the accords today."I stood in front of the projector screen, looking at the map covered in arrows and data.A month ago, inspired by my own suppressed past, I had written the first line of this strategy.Don't rely on anyone. Grow back from the cracks, by your own strength."The most important echo should come from within yourself." I'd said that in an interview for the Alliance's internal journal. But standing here now, I finally understood the weight of those words. The core warriors rose to their feet, raising their glasses to me.I didn't feel a shred of vanity. Just a profound, solid sense of self.It was late when the victory celebration ended.I threw on my coat and walked out o

Caleb's POVI didn't go after her.Rowan's figure disappearing into the blizzard was like the end of an old, faded movie.I went back inside and locked the door.I opened my laptop and went back to work. The phantom ache from the broken Mate Bond was still there, a ghost in my nerves. But true healing isn't about the pain stopping. It's about feeling the pain and still making the right choice. The next day, I moved into a high-level isolation sector, deeper in the core territory.Security was tight. No one got in without being a core member.I cut off every possible way for Rowan to find me.For the next week, I threw myself into integrating the territories. The Northern Silver Mine and High-Grade Crystal Sector merger. It was the first strategy I spearheaded. At the head of the conference table, I spread out the map. "Their defenses look strong," I said, my voice low. "But they have three fatal flaws. We cut off their supply lines here, here, and here. The balance of power at the nego

Caleb's POVThe plane landed in Blackpeak Territory at dawn. My phone was vibrating off the hook.Sixty-three missed calls. Over a hundred texts. All from Rowan.I stared at the screen for three seconds. Then went to my settings.Block.My finger tapped the button without a single shred of doubt.A huge man stood at the bottom of the jet stairs. Dark coat, eyes sharp as knives."Caleb." He held out a hand. His voice was a low rumble. "I'm Marcus."I shook his hand. As I started to speak, I saw a flicker of shock in his eyes.He let go, taking half a step back. His nostrils flared."That scent you had… the calm, Beta scent…" Marcus’s voice was tight. "It's gone. Replaced by something else. A possessive, Alpha scent. It's nothing like I remember."It was only then I realized. The Alpha presence I had forced down for twenty years was now pouring out of me, unchecked.Pure. Wild. A cold, territorial dominance. The kind of consuming power that only a top-tier Alpha possesses.Marcus grinned

The moment the plane broke through the clouds, the cabin shook. A jolt of turbulence as we crossed the pack border.I didn’t grab the armrest like I used to.I opened my bag. Pulled out my tablet. Opened the note I kept locked behind three passwords. The last page was a list. Dates and descriptions. Every single time Rowan had broken her promise to me in the last three months.1. March 2nd. Forgot to pick me up from work.2. March 9th. Forgot our dinner date....17. Last night. Forgot our Bonding Anniversary.I used to think keeping a list like this was pathetic. Love isn’t a business. You don’t keep a ledger.I was wrong. If I didn’t write it down, her easy “I forgot” would smooth everything over. My hurt would be dismissed. My sacrifices, ignored.Staring at the cold, hard facts on the screen was the only thing stopping me from caving. It was the only thing that forced me to see the truth.I closed the tablet.“Enough,” I whispered. As the plane pulled away from Silvermoon Ridge, a
