Chapter 2

Author: Liora Z
“You’re really doing it? Caleb, I’ve waited three whole years for this day!”

On the screen, the face of Marcus, the usually stone-cold Alpha of the Blackpeak Pack, was lit up with pure joy.

“This is your seventh invitation, Marcus,” I said, leaning back in my chair. “The first six times, I turned you down. For Silvermoon Ridge. For Rowan. But this time, I’m saying yes.”

“Give me two days, tops. I’ll arrange the highest-level private transport!” Marcus slammed his hand on his desk in excitement. “I’ll be there to greet you myself! Those fools at Silvermoon Ridge have no idea. They just lost the greatest strategic mind on the continent!”

Bang!

The study door was thrown open.

It was 8 PM.

Rowan should still have been at headquarters, “handling business” with her Omega scribe, Finn.

She was home early.

She swept in wearing an expensive black coat, bringing the night’s chill with her. And something else. The faint, but unmistakable, scent of an Omega.

“Blackpeak? Who’s going to Blackpeak?”

She’d caught those two words, her blue eyes narrowing dangerously.

But I didn’t even need to answer.

In the next second, her attention had already shifted.

She brushed right past me. She crouched, yanked open the safe, and pulled out two black, gold-embossed invitations.

My blood ran cold.

The high-power banquet for the Eastern Alpha Council.

In pack tradition, it was the ultimate arena for an Alpha to display their strength. They had to attend with their strongest, most trusted mate, showing all allies and enemies that they were untouchable.

And now, she was clutching the two invitations that should have been for us.

What stung more was the date printed in the bottom right corner: Yesterday.

“Finn helped me organize the archives for the new territory this afternoon. He worked so hard.” Rowan didn’t even look at me. She was talking fast, stuffing the invitations into her handbag. “As a reward, I’m taking him to this banquet tonight so he can see how things work.”

I just stood there, watching her back, the whole thing felt like a sick joke.

She got the invitations yesterday. It was all planned.

And she was using a flimsy excuse about him “helping out this afternoon” to try and brush me off.

She was stripping me of my title as her mate, letting an Omega who couldn’t even control his own scent take my place on the most important night of power.

My heart seized. A raw, physical pain tore through our mate bond.

My eyes started to burn.

But I clenched my jaw so hard it ached, swallowing the pathetic sting down.

Cold logic took over. I didn't even have the energy to call out her lie.

“Rowan.” I stared at her back, my voice flat. “Do you remember what day it is?”

Rowan, who had been rushing out, stopped dead in her tracks.

She turned around, her brow knitted together, her blue eyes filled with irritation.

“Caleb, are you ever going to let this go?” Her voice rose. She sounded so impatient. “I already told you, the Moonstone is being prepared! Are you really starting a fight over a damn rock right now?”

I just looked at her, at that beautiful, furious face.

Today was our Bonding Anniversary.

She’d completely forgotten.

In her mind, my question was just a mate whining because he didn’t get his gift.

“I still have to change. Finn’s waiting for me in the car downstairs. It’s his first time at an event like this, he’ll be scared.”

Rowan glanced at her watch, her voice urgent.

When she talked about Finn, her eyes filled with this smug vanity, the look of an Alpha Female who loved being needed. It was practically overflowing.

She was high on it. And me? I was too strong. So strong that I was just an inconvenience.

“Fine.” I managed a smile that held no warmth. “Go.”

Rowan blinked.

She clearly hadn’t expected me to back down so easily. A flicker of guilt, of regret, crossed her face.

“You should get some rest,” she said, turning to leave.

“Rowan, wait.” I called out to her one last time.

She stopped short, turning back with a wary look in her eyes.

"Bring me some roasted venison from the east side tonight. Like we had after our first hunt." I looked her straight in the eye. "I won't be sleeping. There's something important I need to tell you. In person."

A flash of annoyance crossed her face. But to get out the door to her Omega, she agreed without a second thought.

“Got it!”

The door slammed shut.

She couldn’t stand to be here one second longer.

The huge estate fell silent.

I walked slowly back to the study and sat down at the desk.

On the screen, Marcus had already sent the arrival details for Blackpeak and a top-level security code.

I stared coldly at the blinking cursor.

Two whole months.

I had been so excited for our anniversary. I’d looked forward to the Moonstone healing my old wounds. I’d looked forward to standing by her side at that banquet as her Beta, ready to dominate.

Now, all of it was gone.

But when I put a hand on my chest, I didn't feel the soul-crushing agony I expected.

There was only the cold, hard logic that comes after your heart has finally given up.

I didn’t care anymore.

It didn’t matter how good the venison she brought back was, or what excuses she came up with. It was all meaningless.

After our talk tonight, I’d be on that plane.

I looked out the black window, a cruel smile on my lips.

From now on, Rowan and I were nothing to each other.

The Alpha potential I lost. The dignity she trampled on. The throne I handed her myself.

Once I get to Blackpeak, I’m taking back everything that’s mine.

Caleb's POVA year later, I returned to my home city as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. I was hosting the North American Werewolf Alliance summit, titled "Echoes of Self."The spotlight was on me at the podium. A sea of reporters pointed their cameras my way."Alpha Caleb, a year ago you chose to leave Silvermoon Ridge. Now you return as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. How does it feel?"I held the microphone, my voice steady. "I don't regret the chances I gave up for a mate. But if I could do it all over again, I would have learned to love myself first, a lot sooner."A murmur of approval went through the crowd. After the interviews, I made my way through the throng, heading for the lounge. At a corner, I stopped.A figure in a dark trench coat stood silently in the shadows.Rowan.She was even thinner than a year ago. Pale, with a permanent exhaustion in her eyes. She saw me and her body went rigid."It's been a long time," I said first. She looked up, meeting my eyes from a few feet away. I

Caleb's POVAfter Rowan went back to Silvermoon Ridge, she was a different person.Jax told me later that she’d had three major lapses in judgment during core pack meetings. The Alpha Female's mental instability, a direct result of the broken bond, almost tanked a major mining deal. The core warriors started talking. Whispering that their Alpha wasn't right.Someone would glance at her wrist, where the bond bracelet used to be. It was empty now.During a meal, she ordered a plate of roasted venison, but when it came, she just stared at it, not taking a single bite.If someone even mentioned the name "Blackpeak," her face would go pale and she'd make an excuse to leave the room.Jax said that after Finn was exiled, he became desperate. He cornered her outside her office and demanded to know why she was blaming him."I didn't force you to forget his anniversary! Why am I taking all the heat for this?" Finn had shouted, his voice full of resentment.Rowan was silent for a long time. Final

Caleb's POVThe lights in the conference room were blinding. The applause was loud enough to shake the building."Project Fission. The most perfect western expansion plan in history." Marcus stood up, his voice filled with undisguised pride. "The representatives from all three neutral territories signed the accords today."I stood in front of the projector screen, looking at the map covered in arrows and data.A month ago, inspired by my own suppressed past, I had written the first line of this strategy.Don't rely on anyone. Grow back from the cracks, by your own strength."The most important echo should come from within yourself." I'd said that in an interview for the Alliance's internal journal. But standing here now, I finally understood the weight of those words. The core warriors rose to their feet, raising their glasses to me.I didn't feel a shred of vanity. Just a profound, solid sense of self.It was late when the victory celebration ended.I threw on my coat and walked out o

Caleb's POVI didn't go after her.Rowan's figure disappearing into the blizzard was like the end of an old, faded movie.I went back inside and locked the door.I opened my laptop and went back to work. The phantom ache from the broken Mate Bond was still there, a ghost in my nerves. But true healing isn't about the pain stopping. It's about feeling the pain and still making the right choice. The next day, I moved into a high-level isolation sector, deeper in the core territory.Security was tight. No one got in without being a core member.I cut off every possible way for Rowan to find me.For the next week, I threw myself into integrating the territories. The Northern Silver Mine and High-Grade Crystal Sector merger. It was the first strategy I spearheaded. At the head of the conference table, I spread out the map. "Their defenses look strong," I said, my voice low. "But they have three fatal flaws. We cut off their supply lines here, here, and here. The balance of power at the nego

Caleb's POVThe plane landed in Blackpeak Territory at dawn. My phone was vibrating off the hook.Sixty-three missed calls. Over a hundred texts. All from Rowan.I stared at the screen for three seconds. Then went to my settings.Block.My finger tapped the button without a single shred of doubt.A huge man stood at the bottom of the jet stairs. Dark coat, eyes sharp as knives."Caleb." He held out a hand. His voice was a low rumble. "I'm Marcus."I shook his hand. As I started to speak, I saw a flicker of shock in his eyes.He let go, taking half a step back. His nostrils flared."That scent you had… the calm, Beta scent…" Marcus’s voice was tight. "It's gone. Replaced by something else. A possessive, Alpha scent. It's nothing like I remember."It was only then I realized. The Alpha presence I had forced down for twenty years was now pouring out of me, unchecked.Pure. Wild. A cold, territorial dominance. The kind of consuming power that only a top-tier Alpha possesses.Marcus grinned

The moment the plane broke through the clouds, the cabin shook. A jolt of turbulence as we crossed the pack border.I didn’t grab the armrest like I used to.I opened my bag. Pulled out my tablet. Opened the note I kept locked behind three passwords. The last page was a list. Dates and descriptions. Every single time Rowan had broken her promise to me in the last three months.1. March 2nd. Forgot to pick me up from work.2. March 9th. Forgot our dinner date....17. Last night. Forgot our Bonding Anniversary.I used to think keeping a list like this was pathetic. Love isn’t a business. You don’t keep a ledger.I was wrong. If I didn’t write it down, her easy “I forgot” would smooth everything over. My hurt would be dismissed. My sacrifices, ignored.Staring at the cold, hard facts on the screen was the only thing stopping me from caving. It was the only thing that forced me to see the truth.I closed the tablet.“Enough,” I whispered. As the plane pulled away from Silvermoon Ridge, a
