Chapter 3

Autor: Cutie Kitty
Liam and Victoria's baby? So the proposal hadn't been an act after all?

As if that weren't ironic enough, Liam had called Victoria his wife in front of everyone.

In the five years we'd been together, he'd never once called me that. The most affectionate he'd ever gotten was "babe."

I'd brought it up more than once, telling him I wanted us to call each other husband and wife around other people, the way some couples did.

Every time, he'd flick my forehead and laugh, teasing me for being so impatient. He always said we could call each other that once we were actually married.

I'd assumed he simply didn't believe in using "husband" and "wife" before marriage, so I'd never pushed it. But now he'd called Victoria his wife without a second thought.

So that had never been the reason. I simply wasn't the woman he wanted to call his wife.

While I stood there frozen, the doctor sighed. "Mr. Burnett, your wife is only four months along, and her pregnancy isn't very stable. We'll do everything we can to save the baby."

My ears started ringing.

Four months? I was only three months pregnant.

Then it hit me. A month before I'd gotten pregnant, Liam had gone out of town on a business trip.

No wonder he'd been acting so hot and cold ever since he came back. More than once, I'd woken up to find him secretly scrolling through old photos of him and Victoria.

And lately, whenever things got heated between us, he'd forgotten to use protection several times. Before that, he'd never once slipped up. He always said he had to be responsible when it came to me.

At the time, I'd secretly been happy about the change. I'd thought maybe he'd finally decided he wanted to marry me and wasn't so worried about being careful anymore.

Looking back, maybe he'd been thinking about Victoria whenever we were together. And that so-called business trip had probably been nothing more than an excuse to see her.

He'd been gone for an entire month. I didn't need anyone to tell me what had happened between them during that time.

A chill ran through me, and my chest tightened until I could barely breathe. I took several slow breaths before I finally managed to steady myself.

Once I'd calmed down, I was surprised to find that I mostly felt relieved. I'd already decided to leave Liam anyway. Whatever had happened between him and Victoria was no longer my problem.

Just then, a nurse called my name. "Natalie Elling? We're ready for you. Please come in for your D&C."

Liam immediately looked in my direction. But Victoria let out a soft cry of pain, and his attention snapped right back to her.

"That can't be Natalie. It must be someone else with the same name," he murmured.

If he'd bothered to walk a few steps closer, he would've seen that it really was me. But when it came down to Victoria or me, he still chose her.

I walked into the procedure room and lay down on the cold table. The procedure was easier than I'd expected. Once the anesthesia took effect, I drifted off.

When I woke up, it was already over. I stared at what remained of the pregnancy, overwhelmed by emotions I couldn't even begin to put into words.

Once I'd recovered enough to leave, I collected my paperwork and the medication the doctor had prescribed, then took a cab home.

I was going to pack my things, move out, and cut Liam out of my life for good.

When I got home, he still wasn't back. He was obviously too busy taking care of Victoria.

Surprisingly, it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I simply started packing.

I threw every photo booth strip Liam and I had taken together into the trash, along with all the matching things we'd bought over the years.

Memories that had once seemed so sweet now felt humiliating and painfully ironic.

But the most pathetic part was that after living with Liam for five years, I couldn't even fill a small suitcase with my belongings.

Looking back, maybe he'd never loved me that much. He'd just been good at saying all the right things, and I'd been stupid enough to believe him every time.

But I wasn't going to fall for it anymore.

By the time I finished packing, my back was aching. I was about to lie down on the couch and scroll through my phone when I saw a new post from Victoria.

The photo showed a huge box packed with more than five pounds of cherries. Beside it, Liam sat next to Victoria, feeding her cherries and carefully tucking the blanket around her.

Arthur said, "I heard something sweet can cheer you up. My treat. Have as much as you want."I smiled at him. "Um, thank you. For what you did back there, and for this."Arthur smiled back. "Still so polite with me, Nattie?"Nattie? The familiar nickname made me freeze. I took a closer look at him.I hadn't really gotten a good look at him before, but now that I had, something clicked. His eyes and features looked unmistakably familiar.Arthur was my childhood best friend, the boy I had grown up with before he moved abroad years ago. He had always called me "Nattie," and I had called him "Artie."We had grown up together and were practically inseparable until we finished high school. Then Arthur's family suddenly moved overseas.Everything happened so quickly that we never even got the chance to exchange contact information before he left. After that, we lost touch. Then I got together with Liam, and he became the center of my world. Little by little, Arthur faded from my thou

"You're Ms. Elling, right? I'm Arthur Floyd.""Nice to meet you."I couldn't explain why, but something about him felt oddly familiar. He handed me the menu and told me to order whatever I wanted. I had just started looking through it when someone suddenly rushed over."Natalie, you're my girlfriend. How can you go on a date with another man behind my back?"Every head in the restaurant turned, and people immediately started watching the drama unfold. Before I could react, Liam stormed over, grabbed my wrist, and tried to drag me away. "Come home with me!"I immediately yanked my hand free. "Let go. We broke up a long time ago!"Liam only tightened his grip. "I never agreed to the breakup, so it doesn't count. Natalie, I know you're still angry with me because we lost the baby, but we can have another one."Come on, stop being stubborn and come home with me."Across from me, Arthur froze. "A baby? Natalie, you were pregnant?"Liam immediately wrapped an arm around me, lookin

After that, Liam started contacting me from a new number, desperately trying to win me back."Natalie, I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please come back."Babe, I miss you so much. I'm going crazy without you!"I ignored every single message. Funny how sorry he was now, when it was already too late.I blocked the new number without hesitation. There was no chance I was ever going back to him.I thought that would finally make Liam give up. Instead, he showed up at my house. I had just gotten home from work when I spotted a familiar figure waiting outside."Liam? What are you doing here?"The moment he saw me, he hurried over and pulled a cup of hot chocolate from beneath his coat. "Here, Natalie. Your favorite. I kept it close so it would stay warm."I froze.Back when we first started dating, he used to do the exact same thing. Whenever he picked me up from work, he'd bring me hot chocolate and tuck it inside his coat to keep it warm. But somewhere along the way, he stopped. At some

Liam was about to leave with Jonah to get a paternity test.Victoria panicked and rushed to stop him. "No, you can't! Liam, Natalie's only saying all this because she's jealous of me. She's trying to come between us. Don't fall for it!"I've never lied to you. Don't you trust me? If you go through with that test, it means you never trusted me or believed in what we had!"Liam stopped, clearly wavering.I wasn't about to let Victoria talk her way out of this. I'd waited far too long to see Liam's reaction when the truth finally came out, so I decided to give her one last push."Why are you so desperate to stop him, Victoria? Got something to hide?"The crowd immediately started murmuring in agreement, and Victoria shot me a vicious glare. In the end, Liam went through with the paternity test anyway, and I tagged along to watch the show. The results came back soon enough. The second Liam read the report, his face darkened with rage. He threw it to the floor and slapped Victoria

A second later, Liam stormed over. He helped Victoria to her feet, scooped the baby up from the floor, then turned and slapped me hard across the face."Natalie, have you lost your mind? You're jealous because Victoria had my baby, so you took it out on him?" he snapped. My face hardened. Without hesitation, I slapped him right back. "I didn't drop the baby. Victoria did it herself to frame me. And I have nothing to be jealous of because that child isn't even yours!"Liam froze, disbelief written all over his face. "What did you say? He's not mine?"He turned to Victoria, a hint of suspicion creeping into his eyes.Victoria went pale and bit her lip, but she recovered almost immediately. Then she threw herself into Liam's arms and clung to him, her voice catching as she spoke."Liam, don't listen to Natalie. How could Jonah not be your son? You were there for me throughout my pregnancy and even when I gave birth! Are you really going to doubt me just because she's trying to come

Soon, all my hard work finally paid off. I passed the exams and earned my management certification, along with several related credentials. With Julian's recommendation, I landed a job as a hotel manager. And of all people to run into on my first day, it had to be Liam and Victoria. They were there to hold a one-month celebration for their baby. That was when it hit me that Victoria had already given birth. Somehow, eight months had flown by.The moment Liam saw me, he raised an eyebrow and gave me a mocking look."Well, what a coincidence, Natalie. So this is where you work now? At the front desk? If you'd just listened to me and married me back then, you could be sitting at home enjoying an easy life right now."Instead, you ended up working as a receptionist."Victoria stood beside him with the baby in her arms, looking just as pleased with herself."I really should thank you, Natalie. If you hadn't stepped aside, I never would've gotten this lucky and ended up with a husban
