Chapter 1

Penulis: Linda Not Lina
As I was packing up and preparing to move, my boyfriend, Eric Eland, walked in, ushering his assistant, Kayla Poe, with him.

"Penny, hurry up and make some mushroom soup. Kayla just passed out from low blood sugar," Eric said, his eyes fixed on Kayla, his face full of concern. Without even lifting his head, he gave me a command.

I glanced up, but instead of rushing to greet him as I used to, I continued what I was doing.

When Eric noticed I didn't respond, he furrowed his brow and looked up at me. "Penny, do you not understand what—"

His gaze fell on my movements, and he froze for a moment. With a darkened expression, he quickly walked over to me. "Penny, you're packing your bags? Are you seriously planning to break up with me?"

I didn't stop what I was doing, speaking lazily, "Why would I pretend to break up with you?"

"What…" Eric was caught off guard by my indifferent tone, his cold eyes locking onto mine.

"What's wrong?" I curled my lips into a half-smile and quickly glanced at Kayla before sarcastically adding, "See, you brought your wife home. It's only natural that I make room for her."

"P-Penny, what are you talking about? I don't understand!" Eric's anxiety became visible, and his gaze began to shift uncomfortably.

I scoffed and threw the marriage certificate in his face. "Eric, are you serious? You can do things but not own up to them?"

His eyes widened in panic when he saw the marriage certificate. He growled, his voice full of anger, "Penny, what trick are you playing? Where did you get this?"

I stared at him, a hollow smile on my face, and said nothing.

In the awkward silence, Kayla's voice cracked with tears. "Eric, I sent it to the wrong address… I didn't mean for you and Penny to fight over it. It's all my fault." She started to sob.

"Kayla, you didn't do anything wrong." Eric's demeanor shifted instantly, and he walked toward her with overwhelming tenderness, guiding her carefully into the room.

He looked back at me. "Since you know now, I won't hide it from you. Kayla was recently diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. She doesn't have much time left, and her last wish is to marry me. You know, Kayla has been by my side since graduation, always helping me out. She's not just my assistant—she's my friend. I can't just stand by and do nothing when she's in need. When Kayla… We'll go get our marriage certificate later. Penny, you understand, right?"

Eric's eyes were full of hope as he looked at me.

I turned away, uninterested, and replied coldly, "She's your assistant and friend, but she's also your wife now. You should be discussing things with her, not me. I don't have anything to offer in this situation."

Seeing my firm attitude, Eric's brows furrowed again. "Penny, is this really how you're going to be? Do you have no compassion? I've told you I'll marry you—what's the difference if it's sooner or later? Kayla's sick, and you're going to treat her like this?"

Kayla lowered her head, fake tears rolling down her cheeks.

I stopped what I was doing, lifting my gaze to the pair standing side by side. Their synchronized act was almost comical. I suddenly burst into laughter.

It would be a lie if I said it didn't sting when I saw the former love of my life being so tender and caring toward another woman.

But our relationship was already tainted. I didn't want to be involved any longer.

"Fine, I'm coldhearted. I'll leave right now so I won't be in your way."

I nodded and quickly grabbed my suitcase, heading for the door.

As I passed by Eric, he suddenly grabbed my arm, his tone as sharp as ever.

"Penny, you've crossed a line. Go apologize to Kayla now, and I'll pretend this didn't happen. Otherwise—"

I interrupted him, my voice dripping with mockery, "Otherwise what? You won't forgive me even if I beg? Why should I apologize to her?"

Eric's face went completely dark, his voice full of warning, "Penny, enough! I'll give you one last chance—apologize to Kayla! Or don't come back to me!"

In the tense silence, Kayla tugged at Eric's wrist, pretending to be understanding.

"Eric, don't be mad at Penny. It's not her fault. It's all my fault. I should leave…"

Eric immediately shrugged me off and rushed to comfort her. Taking advantage of this moment, I grabbed my suitcase and left without looking back.

Before I stepped out the door, Eric's cold voice rang out one last time. "Penny, once you leave through that door, don't even think about coming back. I can't wait to see how 'great' your life will be without me!"

"Eric, it's one thing for others to not know what's going on between us, but don't you know full well?" "Penny..." Eric bit his lower lip, looking at me with pleading eyes.I ignored him and turned to face everyone. "Eric and I broke up a long time ago because he secretly married another woman behind my back." There were shocked gasps, and I continued, "Sorry. I've had a bit too much to drink, so I'm leaving now."I couldn't stay in that suffocating space any longer. I pushed open the door and rushed out.I never expected Eric to become so difficult to deal with. I started to miss the old him—the one who once arrogantly looked down on everything."Eric, how much longer are you going to follow me?" I stopped walking and snapped, "Chasing after me like this will only make me hate you more!" Tears kept falling from his eyes as he quietly spoke, "Penny, I know you're leaving for good now, and I know I can't keep you, but I just wanted to see you one last time... Just a few more

After that day, I completely cut off contact with Eric. I didn't keep up with the latest news on Eland Enterprise, but it wasn't hard to catch a glimpse of their struggles on TV. To appease the angry Cannon Group, Eland Enterprise had to pay a hefty fine, which led to massive layoffs to save costs. The public outcry from Cannon Group was deafening, and negative news about Eland Enterprise flooded in like a tidal wave. If Eland didn't have its established roots, it might have collapsed during this crisis. I didn't care much. It was all Eric's doing, and he had to face the consequences. Just as I was ready to pack up and go abroad for further studies, Cannon Group somehow got hold of my number. Their top executives personally called me, offering a tempting opportunity. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted. But, considering that joining Cannon Group might mean dealing with Eric again, I politely declined their offer. I reached out to my old professor from college to get ad

That night, the fiasco at Eland Enterprise's banquet made its way to the top of the trending list.Somehow, my phone number had been leaked, and by the time evening came, reporters eager for gossip had crashed my phone, causing it to freeze repeatedly. I blocked one batch of numbers, but another batch quickly took their place.Out of options, I had no choice but to visit the service center the next morning to cancel the couple's phone plan Eric and I had shared. Finally, peace returned to my world.Just when I thought I could enjoy some quiet, Eric pulled the same trick again. He showed up with three cars, blocking the entrance to my apartment building so that no one could get through. He threatened to stay in his car permanently unless I agreed to go with him.At this point, I no longer feared the neighbors' gossip; what concerned me more was the possibility of reporters setting up camp outside. If that happened, my peaceful days would be over for good.I climbed into his car

I didn't expect Eric to follow me.His shoes had come off, leaving a trail of blood behind him as he ran.I quietly retracted my gaze and waited for my ride to arrive. When he saw me, he reached out, trying to pull me into his arms. But when he saw the coldness in my eyes, he stopped, his steps faltering."Penny, I've thought about it, and nothing matters more than you. Eland Enterprise is fine; my dad will take care of everything."His words were sincere, but I understood the unspoken message. When I didn't respond, he cautiously stepped closer and grabbed my hand. Tears filled his eyes as he looked up at me, his voice wavering. "Penny, my feet hurt so much."I didn't reply, my eyes drifting past him to look behind him."You should be telling your legitimate wife about your pain, not dragging me, your ex, into this."At my words, Eric's emotions flared, but he quickly calmed himself. He took another step forward, wrapping his arm around my waist. "Penny, stop being sarcastic

I was stopped again by security and had no choice but to turn around and face him.Eric, pulling me toward him, said in a hurt tone, "Penny, how could you do this to me? Didn't we agree on this?"At that moment, Kayla appeared. She looked at us, hesitant, and spoke softly, "Eric, I'm not feeling well. Could you stay with me for a while?"Eric didn't even glance at her. Instead, he looked at me with a hopeful expression. "Penny, stop messing around. Please don't be mad at me anymore, okay?"The atmosphere grew tense as everyone around us filmed the scene, holding their phones up.I tried to remind him, but he ignored it, still holding onto me tightly. That was when my temper flared. "Eric, you have no shame, but I still do. You kicked me aside to marry someone else, then when I give you my blessings, you won't stop dragging me back. What do you want from me?""No, Penny, I've always loved you. I'm going to divorce Kayla, and we'll get our marriage certificate immediately."By no

The car pulled up to a hotel owned by Eland Enterprise.Eric, still fuming, got out and stormed off the moment the car came to a stop. His bodyguard stayed close, not concerned that I might try to run.I took my time getting out of the car, and Kayla, no longer hiding her smug expression, blocked my way.Gone was the timid girl I once knew; now, she had an air of arrogance as she faced me."Penny, don't get too smug. Eric is my husband now, and you're just a small-time mistress. You wait—by the end, I'll be the one standing proudly beside him!"I smiled mockingly and clapped my hands. "Congratulations, Ms. Poe. Looks like you've finally transformed from a nobody to a somebody."I walked past her with disdain, heading toward the building. The truth was, I knew why Eric insisted I attend the signing ceremony today—it wasn't because he cared about me.It was because the big shot company signing with Eland Enterprise today was one I had secured. The company's leadership only trus
