Chapter 12

After emerging from the school, Vivian barrelled through when saying goodbye to Edward. She did not shake his hand or even bother to look at his reaction before turning around and rushing to her own car at the side of the road. Suddenly, just as she unlocked the car, she realized that her front left tire was deflated. She could not recall when she had punctured her tire.

The tire was extremely deflated. From the looks of it, there was nothing she could do except change it with the spare tire. It had been perfectly fine when she had driven over, so how could it have deflated so quickly? Enraged, she lifted her leg and kicked the rim—hard.

Edward’s car drove towards her from a distance, stopping right behind her.

“What happened, Miss Carraway?” he asked, lowering his car window.

She instinctively jumped in fright, then turned around. “Nothing,” she replied, putting on a pleasant expression.

He cocked his head, and looked past her to focus his gaze on the deflated tire. Then, he shifted his gaze back at her and said, “Miss Carraway, where are you going? I’ll ask my driver to drop you off.”

“No need,” she rejected him without a second thought. Edward raised his brow, which made her realize that her rejection sounded too harsh, so she quickly explained, “I have some work to finish up in my class. You go ahead. I can walk.”

She was obviously lying. She had claimed that she had some urgent matters to attend to back at the office block, but he did not expose her. Instead, he chuckled and politely excused himself. “Alright. Goodbye, Miss Carraway.”

He motioned towards his chauffeur to drive off. The car soon disappeared from the school.

Vivian stood by the side of the road and watched his car disappear into the distance. Then, she rolled her sleeves up to change the tire on her own. Enthusiastic and energetic boys were aplenty in this theoretical school. Soon, a few boys who happened to be passing by approached to help her. She was not modest about it either and asked two of them to help change her tires.

She did not go to her previous school to seek out connections, but she did not go home either. Instead, she drove her car to Golden South City’s Police Department.

Officer Konstantin was surprised by her call but did not reject her invitation. He met up with her at a cafe next to the police department. “Has something happened? You asked to meet me all of a sudden.”

Vivian was not sure how to explain this to him since they were not exactly well-acquainted. Even her request to see him today was an impulsive decision. “Do you still remember me?” she asked.

Officer Konstantin smiled. “Of course.”

Of course, he remembered her. She was the victim of the crime that had been under his jurisdiction four years ago. In that case, she had encountered violent criminals and used a fruit knife to kill one of them while she was being violated. Then, she had driven her car and crushed the legs of another. After escaping, she had immediately called her boyfriend and begged him to call the police.

While there were many beautiful women, there were also plenty of beautiful and smart women. However, what about beautiful and intelligent women who could maintain such calm and rationality during such crucial moments, then commit such a cold-hearted and decisive act? Those were a rare breed, so he would always remember her even though he had not seen her in years.

Vivian was still mulling over how to explain the situation to him. This was simply outrageous. One wrong word and he might think that she was mentally unhinged. She looked into Officer Konstantin’s eyes and asked, “That case from four years ago...you caught that criminal in the end. Are you certain that he’s dead?”

“Huh?” Officer Konstantin was taken aback by her question.

“Sean Jackson. I’m referring to Sean Jackson,” she spat out that horrifying name, speaking a little faster, “I’ve recently met someone who looks a lot like him. His voice, his face, they all look very similar. No, not similar. It’s like they’re the very same person!”

Her panic drew sympathy from the middle-aged man in front of her. His eyes were filled with pity. “Vivian, it’s Vivian Carraway, right? If I remember correctly. Please calm down. I can tell you with utmost certainty that Sean Jackson is dead.”

Vivian pursed her lips and asked, “Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” Officer Konstantin nodded and continued, “That man left a deep impression on me. Not just because of his criminal acts in the underworld, but even more so because he did something very shocking before his death.”

“What was it?” she could not help but ask.

“He volunteered to donate his corneas.”

Vivian was startled. That violent criminal had suddenly been capable of a noble act just before his death. This was really unexpected. She fell silent. After a long pause, she said, “But that man really looks a lot like him.”
