The Press Announcement

The heavy front doors of the penthouse opened at precisely seven in the morning, pushing past the sharp draft of air conditioning that blew through the entrance.

Evelyn was sitting on the edge of the dark leather sofa, holding a lukewarm mug of black coffee between her palms. Her eyes were still red-rimmed from lack of sleep, her faded jeans and oversized grey t-shirt sticking out awkwardly against the pristine white marble around her.

Mrs. Gable stood near the kitchen island, furiously polishing a crystal pitcher. Her movements were erratic, her ears turned toward the hallway as if waiting for Victoria to somehow reappear and save her position.

Instead, three women in sharp black trousers and matching blazers swept into the foyer, pushing four rolling racks filled with heavy garment bags. Behind them came two men carrying long, velvet-lined boxes and a portable steamer that sizzled softly as it heated up.

At the front of the procession stood a tall man with a silver tape measure hanging around his neck, holding an iPad in his gloved hands.

"Set the racks on the east wall," Julian’s voice echoed from behind them as he stepped out of the private study, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. "The press conference is at nine. She needs to be completely styled in forty-five minutes."

Mrs. Gable froze, her polishing towel dropping onto the granite counter. "Mr. Vance? I was under the impression we were preparing breakfast for the board members—"

"You are not preparing anything for the board, Mrs. Gable," Julian said without looking at her. He gestured toward the rolling racks, where a stylist was unzipping a heavy black garment bag to reveal a sea of Italian silk, tailored wool coats, and custom leather heels. "My wife’s clothes were destroyed yesterday afternoon. I’m replacing them."

Mrs. Gable’s face drained of color, her eyes darting nervously toward Evelyn. "Mr. Vance, I can explain about the utility room—"

"I don't recall asking for an explanation," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-thin tone. "You are to assist the styling team with the steam irons. If I see a single thread out of place on my wife’s outfit, you will hand over your keys before noon."

Mrs. Gable swallowed hard, her jaw working silently before she bowed her head. "Yes, Mr. Vance."

Evelyn watched the housekeeper hurry toward the steamer, her hands trembling as she took a silk dress off the hanger. The quiet satisfaction hit Evelyn in the center of her chest, hard and surprisingly warm. It wasn't an apology, but watching Mrs. Gable forced to steam the very clothes meant to replace the ones she helped destroy felt remarkably like justice.

The head stylist stepped toward Evelyn, bowing slightly. "Mrs. Vance. I am Antoine. We have six custom options pre-selected based on Mr. Vance’s parameters, along with three sets of pearl jewelry and four pairs of footwear."

Evelyn set her coffee mug on the table, looking at the long row of high-end dresses. There were navy wool coats, emerald silk gowns, and a striking ivory suit with gold button accents. Each item easily cost more than her father’s former car.

"Pick the navy suit," Julian instructed, stopping beside the couch. He tossed a black velvet box onto the cushion beside her. "And put these on."

Evelyn opened the box. Resting inside was a simple, breathtaking platinum ring set with a clear, emerald-cut diamond that caught the morning light. Beside it was the official state-sealed marriage certificate from the city registrar, bearing the official stamp from four o'clock that morning.

"The press is waiting downstairs at the corporate headquarters," Julian said, checking his watch. "Harrison leaked a story to the financial tabloids two hours ago claiming I was unmarried and unfit to retain the board's trust shares. We're shutting it down before the market opens."

"A press conference?" Evelyn whispered, her fingers tracing the smooth metal of the ring. "You didn't mention a public announcement."

"I don't announce my tactical moves in advance," Julian replied, looking down at her with cold precision. "You signed the contract. This is step one of the performance."

Thirty minutes later, Evelyn stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest suite.

The navy wool suit fit her perfectly, tapering at her waist and falling smoothly over her hips. The diamond ring felt heavy on her left hand, a constant, physical reminder of the five-million-dollar leash around her neck. Antoine had swept her hair up into a tight, elegant twist, hiding the dark circles beneath her eyes with a light layer of foundation and matte lipstick.

She looked like a woman who belonged in a penthouse. She looked like Mrs. Vance.

"Two minutes, Mr. Vance," Marcus called out from the hallway.

Julian walked up behind her, his reflection appearing in the mirror beside hers. He reached down, taking a small platinum brooch from his pocket, and pinned it carefully to her lapel. His fingers brushed against her collarbone—cold, quick, and completely devoid of affection.

"Remember the rules, Evelyn," he murmured near her ear. "You look at me when I speak. You smile when the flashbulbs go off. If anyone asks about your past, you tell them we reconnected six months ago in London."

"And if they ask about my father's bankruptcy?" she asked, her reflection staring back at his.

"Tell them it was settled privately," Julian said, dropping his hand. "Let's go."

The basement parking garage of Vance Enterprise headquarters was packed with black SUVs and security detail. When the private elevator opened on the ground floor, the noise hit Evelyn like a physical wall.

Over a hundred journalists, cameramen, and local news teams were crammed behind velvet ropes in the marble lobby. Bright LED floodlights blinded her the moment she stepped out behind Julian, the aggressive clicking of shutters sounding like a swarm of insects.

"Mr. Vance! Is it true the board is holding an emergency vote?"

"Julian! Look over here!"

"Who is the woman with you?"

Julian didn't slow his stride. He took Evelyn’s hand, his fingers closing around hers with a grip so tight it kept her trembling fingers steady. He led her straight up the steps to the mahogany podium, where six microphones were clustered together bearing major network logos.

The flashbulbs flared white, reflecting off the glass walls. Evelyn kept her chin up, forcing her lips into a calm, practiced smile as she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him.

Julian raised his free hand, and the roaring lobby instantly fell dead silent.

"Good morning," Julian said into the microphones, his voice carrying clearly over the speakers. "I will make this brief, as I have an executive committee meeting at nine-thirty."

He paused, letting his dark eyes scan the front row of reporters, where several financial analysts stood holding recording pads.

"There have been numerous unsubstantiated rumors circulating in the press regarding my personal life and my eligibility to retain my family's voting shares," Julian continued smoothly. "I am here to clear the record before the market opens today."

He lifted his left hand, displaying his own platinum band, then turned slightly to lay his palm flat against Evelyn’s back.

"This is my wife, Evelyn Vance," Julian announced, his tone steady and iron-clad. "We were legally married earlier today in a private ceremony. The official registry filings have already been submitted to the board of directors and the state probate office."

A collective gasp echoed through the lobby, followed by a furious wave of camera flashes that made Evelyn’s vision go entirely white for a second. Microphones thrust forward over the velvet ropes like spears.

"Mr. Vance! Was this a sudden decision?"

"Mrs. Vance! What is your background with the family?"

"Mr. Vance, how does Uncle Harrison feel about this?"

Julian ignored the shouts, turning to lead Evelyn back toward the private security door behind the podium.

Then, a voice cut through the chaos from the far left corner—a loud, sharp-featured reporter holding a microphone marked with the Vance Financial Watch logo.

"Mr. Vance!" the reporter shouted over the noise, stepping over the barrier. "Is it true Mrs. Vance was paid five hundred thousand dollars to marry you to secure your trust fund?"

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. Her blood ran completely cold inside her veins as her left foot froze mid-step on the carpeted stairs.

Julian stopped.

He slowly let go of Evelyn’s hand. He turned his head toward the reporter, his dark eyes locking onto the camera lens with a lethal, terrifying glare.

The silver Maybach pulled up to the penthouse private garage at six-thirty that evening.Evelyn was sitting on the velvet sofa in the main living room, a notebook resting on her knees. She had spent the last three hours mapping out her sister's upcoming physical therapy schedule alongside her own remote work assignments for the logistics firm. Her fever had completely cleared, leaving only a faint tiredness in her shoulders. When the front door clicked open, Evelyn stood up, closing her notebook. "Julian? I told Mrs. Gable we could set the dining—"Julian walked past the foyer without looking at her.He didn't slow his stride, nor did he drop his leather briefcase onto the entry table as he usually did. He was wearing a charcoal three-piece suit, his necktie tightened perfectly to his collar, his expression completely blank. He looked as distant and unreachable as the day she had signed the contract in his corporate office."Julian?" she called out again, stepping out into the hallway

The air in the bedroom froze as Julian’s fingers held Evelyn’s wrist in place. His eyes were completely clear, the heavy fog of sleep evaporating the exact millisecond his instincts took over. He didn't let go immediately. He stared at her, his pulse thumping steadily against the inside of his own palm where he gripped her skin."What are you doing?" Julian’s voice was rough, gravelly from disuse, but the edge in it was sharp enough to cut glass.Evelyn swallowed hard, her tongue feeling like sandpaper against the roof of her mouth. She tried to pull her wrist back, but his fingers remained locked around her tendons like iron bands."You had a hair in your eyes," Evelyn said. Her voice cracked slightly on the second word. She hated how weak she sounded, how small she felt lying under the heavy duvet with an IV tube taped to the back of her left hand. "I was just... moving it."Julian stared at her for two long seconds. Slowly, deliberately, he opened his fingers and released her wrist

The morning sun filtered pale and weak through the heavy gray drapes of the guest suite, casting a cool slant of light across the hardwood floor. Evelyn’s eyelids felt heavy, sticking together as she slowly blinked against the brightness. The burning heat behind her eyes was gone, replaced by a dull, lingering ache at the base of her neck. Her mouth tasted stale, like copper and cheap aspirin, but her lungs moved clearly for the first time in two days. She tried to turn onto her side, but a dull tug on the back of her left hand stopped her. A clear plastic tube ran from a clear bag hanging on a steel pole down to a strip of clear medical tape on her skin. Beside the bed, an empty glass of water rested on a small plastic tray next to three foil pill packets and a digital thermometer displaying 98.6 degrees. Evelyn shifted her weight slightly, and the mattress creaked under her hip. Sitting in the high-backed armchair pulled right up against the edge of the mattress was Julian. Hi

The Maybach ride back from the Metropolitan Museum passed in a gray blur. Evelyn sat huddled against the leather door, her chin resting heavy against her chest. The ten-million-dollar yellow diamond necklace felt like a fifty-pound lead weight around her collarbone. Her eyelids were burning, hot and dry, while a dull, rhythmic throb hammered behind her left temple. When Marcus opened the car door in the penthouse underground garage, Evelyn stood up too fast. The concrete floor tilted violently under her heels, forcing her to grab the edge of the car frame to steady herself. "Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, reaching out a gloved hand. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine," Evelyn muttered, her throat feeling like sand. "Just tired." Julian walked ahead, his long strides taking him toward the private elevator without looking back. He was already on his phone, snapping out orders about tomorrow’s six-o'clock European equity call. By the time Evelyn made it into the guest suite, her knees were t

The collective intake of breath across the grand ballroom sounded like a sudden wind sweeping through paper. The auctioneer stood frozen at the podium, his mouth opened wide, his wooden gavel hovering two inches above the sound block. The overhead floodlights reflected off the sweat glistening on his forehead as he stared down at the front VIP table. "Ten... ten million dollars?" the auctioneer choked out into his microphone, his voice cracking slightly on the second word. Beside him, the foundation director nearly dropped his leather ledger. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic wave from the media gallery along the east wall. The shutter clicks sounded like a frantic mechanical swarm as reporters scrambled over velvet ropes to get a clear angle of Julian Vance. Dominic Cross’s smirk vanished entirely. The color drained from his face, leaving his sharp jawline looking carved from grey chalk. His bidding paddle remained suspended in his right hand, suddenly feeling useless and

Julian stared at the broken glass at his feet for a long, silent beat. His throat moved in a hard swallow before he slowly raised his head, his dark eyes tracing the razor-sharp gold line of her neck down to the open back of her dress. He didn't mention the champagne. He didn't ask where she had gotten the fabric. "Clean that up," Julian said roughly to Mrs. Gable, his voice low and tight. He stepped over the wet floorboards, grabbed his coat from the rack, and held the front door open for Evelyn without meeting her gaze. "The Maybach is waiting." An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was packed to capacity. Dozens of high-society figures, board members, and corporate investors moved under the towering arched ceilings, their laughter mingling with the soft strumming of a live string quartet. Flashbulbs went off continuously near the entrance, where photographers fought for angles along the velvet rope line. Victoria Sterling stood near the main bar in a sle
