The snow

last update Last Updated: 2025-11-06 20:20:45

I turned my head and faced the leafless trees that used to blow healthy leaves during the rainy season. The trees were bare and looked like crazy clowns. Their branches looked unhealthy and starving like those kids of the early nineteenth century suffering from kwashiorkor.

Oh! And speaking of clowns,I would love to attend this year's evening party held downtown. The party was always full of celebration and fun. I could even get the chance to meet my friends from school.

A smile escaped from my lips and a hearty chuckle followed. I limped playfully in the snow. My boot was almost invisible.

Well, last night was soooo cold because we experienced a rather busty snow storm. My mind was occupied with how this Xmas would be like.

Busty! That's what Iyvonne calls it.

Mom always yelled at her, saying that it was bad language for a Christian home like ours. Iyvonne always protested that it was just an exclamation.

“And I don't want that exclamation in my house young lady!” I mimicked my mom and giggled at my tiny voice. My family is fun to be in.

“Who are you talking to?”

I turned around and saw Janny, my neighbor and my friend too. I smiled rather awkwardly.

“I didn't see you!”

“That's because you were immersed in whatever you were doing.”

She really stressed the ‘doing’ to emphasize on what she meant.

“When did you get here?” I asked.

She put her two hands into her yellow fluffy coat.

“I just got here. I saw you through my window when you came out and wanted to join you, but I had to do my bed and brush before anything else. You know my mom.” She replied and smiled.

Of course I knew her mom. Who doesn't know Janny's mom. A school teacher and a no nonsense woman at that. You can never survive in her home if you are the lazy type. She is also a devoted Christian. That's what brought her close to my mom.

They forged some kind of relationship that I haven't come to understand just yet. Relationships that come to existence only on Sundays and other service days.

I once questioned my mom about it and she asked me if I expected her to always sleep in her house. She said that everyone has a wonderful daily problem of their own that needs daily solutions. She also said that too much of your presence in a friend's house will make her look down on you. Somewhere from the book of proverbs written by Solomon.

I wondered whether the 'her’ she meant was Janny or her mom or rather general. Cause I remembered an occasion that happened during last holiday.I had come to Janny's house to do an assignment together but she totally snubbed me and told me to come back later. Two minutes later she was off with other kids in our neighborhood to play.

It really pained me seriously. I didn't tell my mom.

How would I have told her when she had taught me not to always frequent a friend's house and I disobeyed her.

I gently lay on the bed and became my own pastor. I tried to convince myself to forgive her. That's what God does when we  go wrong right.

I finally forgave her but I dared not go to her house ever again. I would forgive her now and in the next seconds to come I would be angered by her behavior and vow to quit the friendship. But the next few seconds I would forgive her again.

This went on for about two days when she came by to visit me. She apologized for her behavior and I accepted her apologies. But, I never went to her house again.

And I think she understood because she never asked me why.

She was kind of a friend.

She was now the one that always sought after me both at home and in school. I was now the boss but I was careful not to hurt her feelings just the way she did to me. A true Christian wouldn't pay back evil for evil.

I learnt it from my dad.

Back to present,

I reached out and  removed strands of hairs  blown to her face by the winds.

“Thanks.” She said and I nodded.

I bent down, scooped the snow with my hands and threw it up. We smiled in delight as the snow flakes fell upon us.

“Your hair looks beautifu,so darkl.”

She complimented and touched my hair. I smiled.

She always wished that her blonde hair was darker.

“ Your hair is beautiful too.” I said and she smiled awkwardly.

I dragged her with me and we playfully ran further into the street.

We rowed in the snow with our boots and laughed at our stupidity.

In no time, I saw Josh running towards our direction. He stumbled on something and fell, got up and raced towards us screaming my name happily.

He's always stumbling on things.

I stood in wonder mopping at him,my brow furrowed. I knew well enough that Josh never liked being out in the snow. Whatever kicked him out into the snowy street was worth the happiness in his voice.

He held his knee, breathing hard when he got to where I stood.

“Grandpa and the rest of the family have arrived, Zica.”

“What do you mean by that?” I asked, trying to understand what he said.

“Grandpa, Iyvonne, Pete and aunt Carolyn came home together to surprise us.”

‘Ahhhhhhhhh!’ I screamed and ran back home.

Josh was just behind me and Janny was at equals with me.

“You mean what you said Josh,I will murder you if this is a prank.” I yelled as I ran.

“No pranks, you will see them.” He yelled back.

“I think he's serious.” Janny yelled behind me.

  • Zechorah's Funniest Nine Days To New year   Christmas carol

22nd of Christmas) After breakfast on the twenty second of December which happened to be Sunday, mom insisted that everyone must go to church but aunt Caroline refused and went upstairs. Mom gave dad a long stare which I didn't understand before going back to the kitchen. Dad shrugged and went after his sister upstairs. I just sat there on a couch with grandpa swinging my legs like a kid and waiting for whatever that came next.Point of correction!I hated being called a kid so much that I rather go hungry on a bet than agree that I was a kid and that made me do things that were simply out of the ordinary for kids to do. Mom found that outrageous. She kept insisting that I should calm down and act like a kid which I was but dad was the opposite of her reasoning. He thinks that I'm growing up,duh!I was still engrossed in my little fantasy thoughts when Iyvonne walked down stairs, looking distressed. She was complaining about her outfit. She couldn't find a suitable one in all the mou

After the cashier check our stuff, she requested for payment. Mom turned to grandpa for his card because he had insisted he would pay so I don't think mom actually came with her card today. Grandpa fumbled with the pocket in his coat and gave the cashier what was supposed to be his bank card. The cashier's face distorted in confusion as she mopped at whatever was in her hand.“Excuse me Sir but this isn't a bank card.” She said and showed grandpa what he thought was a his bank card. My breath hitched as I mopped at the card in the lady's hand. I swear everyone in the line up…up to twenty people waiting to pay for their goods saw it. I just hoped my eyes weren't deceiving me.That wasn't any bank card,it was a voters card.Heavens!Mom quickly apologized and asked grandpa to bring out his card. We all waited as grandpa fought with his coat for a while. It was just as if the time suddenly stopped moving and our heartbeats resounded in our ears slowly like a warning signal. We truly praye

When morning arrived on the 21st of Christmas,we had already said our morning prayers and went off for morning ablutions. Grandpa was at his usual spot sipping a cup of coffee with his eyes glued to his morning newspaper. Well,it was only grandpa that didn't have to work or participate in morning runs because he was old.I never knew that today would be the most embarrassing day of my life as a kid. Just wait and see how it happened!Once we had taken breakfast and wanted to go upstairs to do our things, grandpa stopped us midstairs with a wave of his hands and gestured us all to come back to the living room. Iyvonne,Pete,Josh and I slowly descended the stairs and walked back to the living room with a head full of question marks.???Aunt Caroline was already in the living room chatting away on Facebook or so I thought. Mom sat on one of the couches and was focused on whatever she was writing on a paper.“Come on everyone, take a seat.” Grandpa said and kept his folded new paper on

Josh definitely laughed at that sarcastic statement Pete made. Mom just smiled. Everyone's used to these two. Iyvonne and Pete are one kind of rivals you can't separate when they are fighting. So we allow it to subsidize before intervening.Iyvonne looked provoked by Pete's dragonistic words.“Dad can cook well,Mr Marshalls can cook, uncle Gabriel can cook, old Mr Winters can cook. Pete you are the only little man I have ever seen that can't cook anything, not even hot water without pouring it on people. You rather drag food with me forgetting that it's ladies and then gentlemen.”“Absolutely!” Grandpa nodded, supporting Iyvonne.“Daaad!” Mom whispered in a bid to stop him from adding fuel to fire.Pete wanted to outsmart Iyv by eating the pasta in their grip but Iyv caught his hand midway and shoved the fork back into the plate. She glared at Pete, her long lashes flipping over like a hand fan.“Ok ok kids, please let's not start this again. This is Christmas and you both just returne

We ran with all our strength, the air blowing our hair backwards.I brushed past Janny and raced into our living room. Janny and Josh followed.I saw Iyvonne and aunt Carolyn making fun of mom in the living room. They were sitting in the couches.I screamed and fell onto aunt Carolyn. I held her tight and she laughed.Well that was a nice pretence. She was my dad's sister ok. No fun from her!I just didn't want her to feel like I didn't miss her absence. If she wasn't in a good mood, this Xmas won't particularly go well because she would devastate everyone and that was the last thing I wanted.Who I wanted to see and missed so much was Pete. I loved him so much and I know he felt the same way too. We shared some kind of deep inseparable bond between us. It was the same between Josh and Iyvonne. We were always together. I was hurt and cried for months when Pete got an admission to study law in the university. I was going to miss him so much. Not long after, Iyvonne got her admissio
