Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
I went to the break room for some water.

As soon as I turned the corner, I heard Ariel's voice from inside. "Kevin, don't you think our boss is fake as hell? All that talk about caring about us, but the second money comes up, the mask comes off."

The other voice belonged to Kevin Slater from Admin, who immediately jumped in to agree. "Tell me about it! Ariel, you've got sharp eyes. You saw right through him. We need more people like you who actually speak the truth.

"I'm behind you all the way! We can't just let this get swept under the rug. People outside need to see what this whole 'dream company' is really like on the inside!"

I carried my cup back to my office without a trace of emotion on my face.

Kevin had an easy job. His favorite pastimes were petting the office cats and slacking off. He took full advantage of the company's flexible hours, then complained about everything behind our backs.

Near the end of the day, my gaze happened to fall on Ariel's desk.

Ariel held up her phone and carefully adjusted the lighting and angle to capture a sleeping orange cat curled up beside a coworker's feet.

Then she switched on a beauty filter and leaned toward the camera.

On the screen, her eyes looked heavy with sorrow and her face drawn with exhaustion, yet she forced the corners of her mouth into a faint smile.

She began recording in a voice pitched for maximum drama and played the part of someone struggling to put on a brave face.

That night, a post exploded across every major workplace forum and racked up countless shares.

[How My "Dream Company" Boiled Me Alive for Three Years]

Ariel had written the post. She filled it with warm, cozy photos of daily life at the company: coworkers petting the cats, birthday parties, and everyone decorating the Christmas tree together. Alongside them, she listed every benefit I had announced that afternoon.

Then, in a tone that sounded objective but dripped with insinuation, she described how the company's "family atmosphere" had lulled her into forgetting that her salary had not changed in years.

In the post, she cast herself as a victim who had finally awakened to the truth.

[Every afternoon there are gorgeous little desserts. My cat lives better at this office than I do. The boss always tells us happiness matters most. I almost believed it. Then I saw a colleague's paycheck and realized how cheap my happiness really was.]

The post did far more damage than I had imagined possible.

The comment section quickly flooded with people who claimed they knew exactly how she felt.

[Oh my God. Isn't this just a new kind of workplace manipulation? Using little perks to make you forget about a raise!]

[OP, wake up! Companies like this are the worst. The second you get older, they toss you out!]

[Boycott hypocritical male bosses like this! Treat us like pets so you can pay us peanuts with a clean conscience!]

[Shared. Letting my friends know to watch out for this kind of kindness trap!]

Within hours, someone leaked my personal phone number and social media accounts, and I was inundated with accusations and abuse.

The next morning, I arrived at the office exhausted and found several news outlets and influencers already camped outside the building.

I had barely sat down at my desk when Ariel sauntered in with Kevin in tow.

Kevin put on an elaborate show of concern. "Mr. Spencer, look at the mess this has become. Ariel is just young. She spoke a little too bluntly, that's all.

"But since it's already gone this far, and the whole internet is calling us masters of empty promises, why not just go with the flow? Give everyone a raise and put this whole thing to rest."

Ariel smugly waved her phone at me. Her post's view count had already climbed into the millions.

"Mr. Spencer, everyone is on my side now. I suggest you announce an across-the-board raise immediately and issue a public apology to me personally." She leaned forward, her voice thick with menace. "Otherwise, I'm afraid the industry association's inquiry letter is already on its way."

Before she could finish, my assistant, Jimmy Carlson, rushed in. His face was drained of color. "Mr. Spencer! Something's happened! The Design Industry Association sent us an official letter.

"They said they've received a large number of complaints and are demanding that we submit three years of salary data and turnover reports for an internal investigation!

"If we don't comply, they'll put us on the industry blacklist!"

They looked like prisoners awaiting a verdict. After a month of this ordeal, none of them had any room left for false hope.I walked up to the podium and surveyed the dull, worn-down faces before me."Everyone, thank you for everything you've endured."That first line alone stopped them cold."Over the past month, this company has undergone an unprecedented reform. It was painful. It was harsh. But it also taught every one of us something."Neither comfort nor dignity comes for free. They have to be earned through loyalty, responsibility, and genuine value."The room remained silent, but something in their eyes began to shift."Now, I'm announcing that, as of today, the company is abolishing the mandatory overtime schedule and the last-place elimination policy."The announcement hit the crowd like a bombshell. No one could believe what they had just heard. Joy and confusion swept across every face in the room.I raised a hand for silence. "But we're not going back to the old d

When the news came through, a brief, subdued cheer rippled across the office. But it did not last. Everyone quickly returned to the same tense focus as before. They all knew this was only a momentary reprieve. The next quarter's KPI evaluation was already looming.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window in my office and gazed out over the city.Russell walked in and handed me a report. "This is Starlight Capital's letter of intent. Mr. Lawrence is very pleased with how you handled the crisis."I froze. "The evaluation... hasn't it not even started yet?"Russell leaned against the edge of the desk with a knowing smile. "The evaluation started the moment I walked through this company's front door. Or you could say it started the moment you saw that post online and decided to fight back."I stared at him, completely lost. "What do you mean?"Russell explained, "What Mr. Lawrence values most isn't how good a company's numbers look. It's the character, vision, and ability of the

The shadow of last-place elimination hung over everyone in the building like the sword of Damocles. To avoid being the one cut, everyone worked as if their lives depended on it.The office lights stayed on all night, every night. No one dared complain anymore. No one dared mention benefits or humane management, not even once. The only thought left in anyone's mind was survival. The bid project ended up in Heather's hands.I called her into my office. She stood before me with her head lowered, like a child who knew she had done something wrong."Mr. Spencer, I'm sorry." She apologized for the reply she had posted under the viral post. "At the time... I just thought what she said made sense. I didn't mean any harm by it..."I looked at the young woman I had once believed in so deeply."Heather, do you know why I was willing to lend you that money personally, in my own name?" I asked. She shook her head."Because I saw sincerity in you. And potential. I believed you were someone

A single idea took root in Ariel's mind and grew fast and reckless. While Heather stepped away to get some water, Ariel quickly snapped a photo of the model's code with her phone. She knew it was theft. She knew it was shameful. But under the weight of everything crushing her and her sheer refusal to lose, she stopped letting herself care. She needed this chance. She had to win.Using Heather's code as a foundation, Ariel pulled two all-nighters in a row and finally put together a flawless proposal. In the final minutes before the deadline, she sent everything she had poured into it to Russell's inbox.…The next day, the results were announced.Ariel's proposal took first place by a decisive margin. When Russell announced the results at the meeting, every eye in the room turned to Ariel, filled with equal parts shock and envy.Ariel's vanity finally got the satisfaction it had been starving for. She straightened her back and drank in the glory she had not felt in far too lon

Russel said, "For this bid, we'll be holding an internal competition. Everyone can submit a proposal. We'll choose the strongest one to represent the company at the pitch. The winner will receive a personal commission equal to 5% of the project's total profit."That single line was enough to jolt the lifeless design department awake. After all, 5% of the profit from a project this size would be an astronomical sum.Ambition flared to life in every pair of eyes around the room.Even Ariel unconsciously tightened her grip on her stylus. This was her only chance to prove herself. If she could land this project, she might be able to reclaim every ounce of dignity she had lost. But Russell's next words doused that hope with ice water. "However, to ensure efficiency, every designer who enters the competition must first complete all of their regular assigned work. Anyone who fails to meet their KPI will not be eligible to participate."The rule might as well have been written specificall

No one stepped forward to comfort Ariel.A thread of resentment had begun to creep into the way people looked at her. After all, Ariel was the one who had dragged them out of heaven and plunged them into hell.…That evening, I received Russell's first weekly work report.According to the report, efficiency had risen by 30% compared to the same period last month. But the average workday had also jumped from eight hours to ten.At the bottom of the report, Russell had added a note.[Phase one of the stress test complete. Team morale is approaching a breaking point. Some employees are already showing signs of wanting to quit.]I replied with two words.[Keep going.]I wanted them to feel it clearly and painfully. I wanted them to understand exactly what they had thrown away.…Over the weekend, the company group chat fell completely silent. No one shared cute photos of their pets anymore. No one made plans to grab a meal together. Then Heather, the programmer I had once helpe
