“Lexy,” the voice whispered as a hand punched through my stomach. “You should have joined me.”

So that’s it huh? This is how I die, a stake through my stomach and I don’t even get to see who did it?

Wake up! Lexy, wake up!” someone yelled at me.

I shot upright in my seat, sweat streaming down my forehead. Next to me stood my girlfriend, Janea. She was tall with curly, jet-black hair, and smooth hazelnut colored skin.

“Same dream?” she asked.

“Yea. This must mean something,” I responded. “How are you holding up on... you know what?”

“I'm okay for now, I think.”

So, I'm a vampire. One of the last ones remaining. One is my girlfriend who I turned just because she asked me to, which I admit wasn’t the greatest idea. The other is the person that keeps appearing in my dreams. Being a vampire comes with a ton of benefits like enhanced speed, strength, healing, and senses. However, there's a major drawback, especially for a new vampire like Janea. The uncontrollable craving for blood.

She must feed from me because the amount she drinks would kill a normal person and thanks to my healing ability, I can replenish my blood at a fast rate. Janea has made good progress towards controlling herself though. She used to feed every hour, but now she can go up to four without needing to feed.

“It has been four hours since the last time, that’s why I'm asking.” I said worriedly.

“Lex, I said I'm fine, leave it at that.” Janea replied.

Just then the bell rang for fourth period, which was ap biology, and we were going over blood types.

If Janea sits through even one minute of this lesson, she’s going to lose it.

Janea must’ve seen the worried look on my face because she said, “I'm good, trust.”

I sighed. No arguing with her when she’s made up her mind.

I'm going to have to bail her out later because of this, why can't she just listen to me?

I’ll give credit where credit is due, she lasted longer than I thought she would, but I was still right.

When I looked over at her, she was trembling and sweating like she was suffering from withdrawals, which in a way she kind of is.

I raised my hand, “Mrs. White, can I use the restroom?”

I was out the door before she could respond and Janea wasn’t too far behind me, successfully executing a plan we’ve practiced many times.

I laughed as we walked towards the restroom, “I told you to skip biology and get this over but no, you want to be hard-headed, now look at you.”

“Shut up,” she said weakly as I pushed open the restroom door.

I barely rolled up my sleeve as Janea bared her fangs, the pointed canines pressing into her bottom lip and making an indention, her eyes becoming slivered and a glowing shade of yellow, her painted nails sharpening into claws.

She chomped down on my arm and no amount of healing or durability can take away the pain of being bitten by a hungry vampire.

“Whoa! Take it easy Janea! That actually hurt,” I exclaimed.

“sowy,” she replied jokingly.

It took her ten whole minutes before she was satisfied.

“We should skip the rest of the period,” I suggested.

“No, I need to learn how to control myself and the only way to do that is by exposing myself,” Janea said defiantly.

I shook my head and sighed again, there’s no reasoning with this girl, is there?

“Fine, have it your way and you better not cry to me if you get yourself in trouble.”

Luckily, we made it through the rest of the period with no further incidents and next was lunch and after that was gym. Pretty easy and fun, right? Wrong. So very wrong.

It started at lunch.

I was laughing with Janea and my only other friend, Allison, when I got the worst cramp of my life. I fell to the ground in the fetal position and clutched my side.

This isn’t a side stitch; this isn’t anything I've ever felt before, this isn’t normal.

I was in real pain, something that doesn’t happen often.

“Lexy what’s wrong!?” Allison yelled, her high-pitched voice causing me a splitting headache that felt like an earthquake.

Suddenly I was lifted off the ground and I felt like I was floating. Is this what an out of body experience feels like?

Janea was carrying me away from the chorus of screaming teenagers, I assumed we were heading to the nurse's office, but she took me straight out of the school. We got to the end of the street and the craziest thing happened; I was perfectly fine. The cramp, the headache, everything gone in an instant.

“Janea, something is really wrong. First, the dream of an unknown vampire killing me, and now this. Something bad is happening and I think I’m right in the middle of it.”

She didn’t respond, just looked at me with worry in her eyes.

  • fangs of fate   chapter 8: a clash of ideals

Vanessa lunged at me and tackled me to the ground. She straddled me and looked down at me, her eyes glowing dark red, almost black, with a look of pure hatred painted on her face.It was in that moment that I realized my sweet, innocent Vanessa really was gone, replaced by a monster made of twisted ideals, raw emotion, and an indomitable will to destroy humanity as we know it. She no longer saw me as her mother, but rather as an obstacle in the way of her achieving her goal. She raised her fists over her head and brought them down, aiming for my face. I leaned left, just barely dodging the blow, and rolled over, putting myself on top. I jumped backwards, allowing both of us to stand."Don't run from me!" Vanessa yelled as she sprinted at me full speed."I'm not running, trust me. Somebody's gonna die here tonight!" I said as I blocked a punch.Vanessa launched a volley of punches as she pressed forward, which kept me on the defensive. She was fighting with pure rage; her strikes were

"Vanessa, honey, Are you ok?" John asked worriedly.I didn't answer, I just stared straight ahead. I could feel a shift in the atmosphere. My mom has finally given up hope."I can't convince her anymore. My mom wants to kill me. Unfortunate really, the two of us together could've been unstoppable, but I won't let anyone get in my, not even her." I said.John looked at me with a shocked expression on his face. "You don't feel upset or sad or-or anything at all? I mean she is still your mother.""The only thing that upsets me about this is that she can no longer be an ally. I've tried to convince her to help me for years but now she's gone from potential ally to enemy. I will do what I have to do." I said without a shred of remorse."You really are cold," John said, astonished. "That's why I love you so much."I laughed, "you would love me regardless. Now," I said much more seriously, "I need to explain something very important to you.""What-""Just listen. If somehow I lose to my mom,

I knew there was no other way. I had tried time and time again to revert her back into that innocent girl who just wanted to explore the world. Now she wants so much more, too much even.I'm the only person who can stop her now. I'll have to kill my own daughter.Lexy ran up behind me and wrapped around my legs, almost causing me to fall. She had a worried look on her face as her big, red eyes welled with tears."Grandma, what's wrong?" She asked, her sweet little voice reminding me of the young innocence that my own daughter once displayed.I reached down and wiped a tear with my thumb. Then I picked her up and sat her on the kitchen counter."Nothing. Don't worry about it, you need to go to sleep, you have an important day tomorrow."It was obvious that she knew something was up. I swear she can pick up on the slightest negative feeling from someone else and somehow it affects her as well."Are you lying? You always say it's bad to lie. Where are you going?" She asked. She's so smar

  • fangs of fate   chapter 5: after school detention

I must say, walking with my two best friends did make me feel better about the recent developments I my life. Something about having them by my side makes me think it will all be okay. That was until... we got detention, as I said we would. Lilianna’s persuasion skills aren’t as good as she claims because she got detention as well. “Great job guys.” I said sarcastically. Lilianna laughed and kept walking, “Sorry, I'm a little rusty in that regard.” As we walked into Mrs. White’s class, I was blindsided by a wave of what I can only describe as pure evil intent, but only for a second. “Did either of you feel that?” I asked, puzzled. Lilianna and Janea looked at each other, “Feel what?” they both asked. What was that? How was I the only one that felt it? “Nothing, let's just get this day over.” I couldn’t get over that immense feeling of dread that hit when I stepped into Mrs. White’s class and it lingered over me all day. Lilianna finally asked me about it at lunch and I just

  • fangs of fate   chapter 4: three best friends

I woke up in my bed to Lilianna and Janea standing over me, worry painted on their faces. “I’m so sorry sis! I don’t know what came over me, I couldn’t control myself. Please forgive me.” Lilianna shouted. My head was pounding, and each word sent a ripple of pain radiating through my body. “It’s ok Lili, dad was controlling you with that stupid watch, it’s not your fault. Also stop screaming, I have the worst headache of my life right now.” Janea now had a stern look on her face. “Explain everything that happened in that house. Now.” Oh, I hate it when she gets like this. So I explained the whole story up until she burst through the door. “Wow, no offense, but your mom sounds awful. And why would your dad revive her?” Janea said. I shrugged my shoulders. At the moment, I didn’t want to think about it. My life was so much simpler yesterday, but now I have a twin sister that was separated at birth, a crazy mom that wants to end humanity as we know it, and an even crazier dad th

  • fangs of fate   chapter 3: dad lore

The three of us left school immediately and headed to Lilianna’s house. I already had a list of questions to ask dad. Is he even my dad? Lilianna stopped us before we got to the door, “Janea, I think you should stay here for now. My dad has been acting weird the last few weeks and I think it has something to do with us,” she said pointing at herself and I. Janea nodded understandably. I walked in behind Lilianna as she called out for dad. “Hmm... he usually answers, he must be busy.” She said. She flipped on the living room light, and I jumped backwards. Sitting in the dark was who I assumed was her dad. Our dad? Oh I don’t know! “Daughter, you’re home! And who is your friend?” he asked in a raspy voice. “She’s my sister. And we want to know everything you know.” Lilianna asked in a stern tone. “Ok. As you two have already learned, you are sisters. Both of you are my daughters, but I wasn’t expecting you to find each other this quickly.” So they moved here just to find me? S
