I knew there was no other way. I had tried time and time again to revert her back into that innocent girl who just wanted to explore the world. Now she wants so much more, too much even.

I'm the only person who can stop her now. I'll have to kill my own daughter.

Lexy ran up behind me and wrapped around my legs, almost causing me to fall. She had a worried look on her face as her big, red eyes welled with tears.

"Grandma, what's wrong?" She asked, her sweet little voice reminding me of the young innocence that my own daughter once displayed.

I reached down and wiped a tear with my thumb. Then I picked her up and sat her on the kitchen counter.

"Nothing. Don't worry about it, you need to go to sleep, you have an important day tomorrow."

It was obvious that she knew something was up. I swear she can pick up on the slightest negative feeling from someone else and somehow it affects her as well.

"Are you lying? You always say it's bad to lie. Where are you going?" She asked.

She's so smart. "I'm just going to handle some business, don't you worry."

"You are lying..." she said as tears started to fall.

"You're right. I'm going to end the war before it begins." I said while smiling.

"Let me help you, please grandma!" She begged.

"Not this time Lexy. I have to do this alone, your aunt Teresa will look after you." I said.

"But-"

"I'll be back, I promise. Now go to sleep." I said firmly.

Lexy reluctantly accepted that I was serious and stormed upstairs. Tears rolled down my face as her little footsteps receded.

I made my way over to the mantle over the fireplace and stared at an old photo of my husband, vanessa, and me. It was from over twenty years ago but it felt like just the other day when I was standing in that park holding her tiny hand.

I sat down on the couch and dialed Teresa's number on the house phone. She answered almost immediately.

"Kathrine?" She answered groggily.

"Teresa, I need you."

"Is everything ok?" She asked worriedly.

"I'll explain when you get here."

"Ok I'm on my way."

I let out a deep sigh as I placed the phone on the table next to me and closed my eyes, reminiscing on the last 30 years since Vanessa was born. I couldn't help but wonder where I went wrong while raising her.

Teresa arrived 10 minutes later looking the most worried I've ever seen her.

"Kathrine, what's going on? It's eleven at night!" She yelled.

"Shhh! Lexy is upstairs but I doubt she is asleep and she doesn't need to hear this. I need you to watch her for a while, I have to take care of something."

"Ok? Are you going to give me something else to go off of?"

"I'm sorry teresa, I don't want you to worry. Just do me this favor, please?" I asked pleadingly.

She looked at me with a sad look plastered on her face, "Kathrine..."

I smiled sadly, "it's better that you don't know, trust me. Everything will work out, I promise you."

I don't know if i'm trying to convince her or myself, but I already knew how tonight would end. I let Vannessa get too strong and tonight is my last chance to stop her.

  • fangs of fate   chapter 8: a clash of ideals

Vanessa lunged at me and tackled me to the ground. She straddled me and looked down at me, her eyes glowing dark red, almost black, with a look of pure hatred painted on her face.It was in that moment that I realized my sweet, innocent Vanessa really was gone, replaced by a monster made of twisted ideals, raw emotion, and an indomitable will to destroy humanity as we know it. She no longer saw me as her mother, but rather as an obstacle in the way of her achieving her goal. She raised her fists over her head and brought them down, aiming for my face. I leaned left, just barely dodging the blow, and rolled over, putting myself on top. I jumped backwards, allowing both of us to stand."Don't run from me!" Vanessa yelled as she sprinted at me full speed."I'm not running, trust me. Somebody's gonna die here tonight!" I said as I blocked a punch.Vanessa launched a volley of punches as she pressed forward, which kept me on the defensive. She was fighting with pure rage; her strikes were

"Vanessa, honey, Are you ok?" John asked worriedly.I didn't answer, I just stared straight ahead. I could feel a shift in the atmosphere. My mom has finally given up hope."I can't convince her anymore. My mom wants to kill me. Unfortunate really, the two of us together could've been unstoppable, but I won't let anyone get in my, not even her." I said.John looked at me with a shocked expression on his face. "You don't feel upset or sad or-or anything at all? I mean she is still your mother.""The only thing that upsets me about this is that she can no longer be an ally. I've tried to convince her to help me for years but now she's gone from potential ally to enemy. I will do what I have to do." I said without a shred of remorse."You really are cold," John said, astonished. "That's why I love you so much."I laughed, "you would love me regardless. Now," I said much more seriously, "I need to explain something very important to you.""What-""Just listen. If somehow I lose to my mom,

I must say, walking with my two best friends did make me feel better about the recent developments I my life. Something about having them by my side makes me think it will all be okay. That was until... we got detention, as I said we would. Lilianna’s persuasion skills aren’t as good as she claims because she got detention as well. “Great job guys.” I said sarcastically. Lilianna laughed and kept walking, “Sorry, I'm a little rusty in that regard.” As we walked into Mrs. White’s class, I was blindsided by a wave of what I can only describe as pure evil intent, but only for a second. “Did either of you feel that?” I asked, puzzled. Lilianna and Janea looked at each other, “Feel what?” they both asked. What was that? How was I the only one that felt it? “Nothing, let's just get this day over.” I couldn’t get over that immense feeling of dread that hit when I stepped into Mrs. White’s class and it lingered over me all day. Lilianna finally asked me about it at lunch and I just

  • fangs of fate   chapter 4: three best friends

I woke up in my bed to Lilianna and Janea standing over me, worry painted on their faces. “I’m so sorry sis! I don’t know what came over me, I couldn’t control myself. Please forgive me.” Lilianna shouted. My head was pounding, and each word sent a ripple of pain radiating through my body. “It’s ok Lili, dad was controlling you with that stupid watch, it’s not your fault. Also stop screaming, I have the worst headache of my life right now.” Janea now had a stern look on her face. “Explain everything that happened in that house. Now.” Oh, I hate it when she gets like this. So I explained the whole story up until she burst through the door. “Wow, no offense, but your mom sounds awful. And why would your dad revive her?” Janea said. I shrugged my shoulders. At the moment, I didn’t want to think about it. My life was so much simpler yesterday, but now I have a twin sister that was separated at birth, a crazy mom that wants to end humanity as we know it, and an even crazier dad th

  • fangs of fate   chapter 3: dad lore

The three of us left school immediately and headed to Lilianna’s house. I already had a list of questions to ask dad. Is he even my dad? Lilianna stopped us before we got to the door, “Janea, I think you should stay here for now. My dad has been acting weird the last few weeks and I think it has something to do with us,” she said pointing at herself and I. Janea nodded understandably. I walked in behind Lilianna as she called out for dad. “Hmm... he usually answers, he must be busy.” She said. She flipped on the living room light, and I jumped backwards. Sitting in the dark was who I assumed was her dad. Our dad? Oh I don’t know! “Daughter, you’re home! And who is your friend?” he asked in a raspy voice. “She’s my sister. And we want to know everything you know.” Lilianna asked in a stern tone. “Ok. As you two have already learned, you are sisters. Both of you are my daughters, but I wasn’t expecting you to find each other this quickly.” So they moved here just to find me? S
