CHAPTER 8: COMA

As soon as he left, she returned back to coma.

The following morning, the doctors had come to check on her. They didn’t notice anything strange about her.

Her body was still the way it was yesterday, and her condition seem not to be getting either better or worst.

“Doctor, how is she?” Mrs Sotomayor asked as soon as they were done.

“Ma’am, your daughter’s condition is really above our capability but I can assure you, we will get to the bottom of this.” He reassured her.

“ Is that supposed to make me feel happy? My daughter is gonna die and all you are telling me is my daughter’s situation is above your capability?” She barked.

“ Ma’am, what I am trying to say is, what happened to your daughter is a situation of life and death. It’s unbelievable that she is able to survive the incident. I mean, no one does but she did. So, I with my colleagues are doing our possible best to make sure she is alive. But… “ He paused.

  “ But what?” She asked.

“ We have a problem here. Your daughter’s brain cells has been damaged and I’m sorry to say that her memory has been affected. “

“ What?!” She exclaimed. “ Doctor, what does that mean?” She asked, frightened.

“It means, she’ll be having a loss of memory. But the good news is, it’s temporal. So, it means we can still solve the problem.” He assured her.

Mrs Sotomayor heaved. “ How long will she have this loss of memory?” She asked.

“It depends on how fast her cells heals. Clinically, I would say weeks or months. Probably a month or two, I guess. “

  “ That isn’t convincing, doctor.”

“ A little hope, Mrs Sotomayor, it will do a lot.”

She called John who was already on his way to the hospital. “ How is she?” He asked.

“ I don’t know what to say but, the doctors said she’ll be fine.” She replied, terrified. “ Where are you now?”

“ Almost at the avenue. I’ll be there in the next few minutes.” He replied

  “ Okay. We’re waiting.”

John’s gaze were fixed at Sonia as he walked into the room. What he was seeing wasn’t exactly what they told him.

He was seeing the opposite of what he expected.

The bandages on her face and hands were much enough to tell the incident wasn’t a minor one. “Apart from getting better, what else did the doctors say?” He asked.

“ They said she’s suffering from loss of memory, but a temporal one though.”

  “ How long?”

“ Wasn’t specific. Weeks, or possibly a month or two.”

“ Jesus Christ. Did the cops tell you how it all happened?”

“ According to the trailer driver, he said she had intentionally stopped at his track. It seems like she was really prepared to die. Or maybe, she did want to die. But it’s still surprising that she could survive the ghastly incident.”

“ Has she woken up since today?”

“ Presently, she’s still in coma.” She replied.

John rubbed his forehead and eyes. “ What was she thinking?”

“ I keep asking myself that,” shook her head, “ still haven’t gotten an answer to that. Do you think someone is after her or something?”

“ You think so?” He asked back.

“ Maybe, we can’t possibly tell. Sonia is a rich business woman, her name is aiming all over the continent. Someone out there is envious of her and possibly wants her dead. Maybe she’s been threatened or close to that, which led to her attempting to commit suicide. “

That’s what they think. The only one fit enough to say the real truth behind the incident is Sonia. But how will they get the truth with her memory lost?

John was bothered about this. Even while he drove back to the motel, he didn’t stop from thinking over his conversation with Mrs Sotomayor.

He was taken aback by her word when she made mention of someone after her. He made his way into his room, but stumbled against an object on the floor.

He rolled his eyes, putting the object back on the table, he continues with his thought.

Why would someone desperately want her dead? What is it he isn’t aware of? What is so precious that she doesn’t want him to know about? What is it that she is prepared to sacrifice so much for, especially her life?

He tried recalling his past moments with her. But yet, there was nothing suspicious about any of her words.

Now who will be after her life?

Cynthia seems to know too. She didn’t want to tell anyone about it, at least not yet. Sonia must have her reasons for doing what she did.

As the evening approached, at once, she drove to the hospital. Luckily, Mrs Sotomayor wasn’t around, she had gone to meet a close friend.

Sonia’s body still laid unconscious on the bed. She touched her hand, it was cold. “Why would you do this to yourself? Did he say anything frightening to you? Master wouldn’t try to hurt his people, no, he would never.

But why would you think of having yourself killed? You’re scared, aren’t you? You’re scared you are his deal.” She scoffs. “ This… this doesn’t make any sense. Maybe I shouldn’t have told you. It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have told you so soon.”

Just then, Mrs Sotomayor entered with a flower in her hand. “ Cynthia?” She called, surprised to see her.

“Hey, mother.” She hugged her and they exchanged soft kisses on her cheek. “I came to check on sister and you too. How is she feeling?” She asked.

“ Better. Hopefully.” She replied, not really sure.

  “ And you?”

“ I’m good. What about you?” She asked back.

“Same here.” Looks at her hand. “I can see you brought her flowers?”

“ Stacy gave it to me. She couldn’t make it here so, she asked me to come over. We met at the gas station.”

Cynthia nodded. Returns her gaze back to Sonia. “ Please do take care of her for us.”

  “I will.”
