CHAPTER 9: THE YOUNG GENTLEMAN.

  TWO DAYS LATER***

  *

Sonia woke up with a groan, her eyes slowly moved around the room only to meet her mother at one side of the bed and John at the other side asleep.

She touched them by the hand, causing them to wake up from their sleep.

“Hey,” she said with the little strength she has.

“Hey,” Mrs Sotomayor smiled broadly at her. “How do you feel, sweetheart?” She asked.

Sonia nodded her head slowly. “ Better, I guess.” She moved her gaze to John who have been silently staring at her.

“Hey.” She whispered with a smile.

“Hey.” He returned the smile. “ I can see you’re getting better, right?” He asked.

She smiled. “What can I say? Don’t tell me you slept over here.”

“I did. Can’t stay without you.”

  She blushed. “ Aww. Thanks.”

“ Are you hungry, I can get you some thing to eat at one of the stores.” He asked.

Her stomach grumbled. “ I’m starving.”

“I’ll be back in a second, okay.” He drops a kiss on her forehead.

  “ Okay.”

  He left.

Mrs Sotomayor is supposed to be happy, but she wasn’t. She wore a worried face which told how bothered she was.

  “What’s wrong?” Sonia asked, worried.

She chuckled, sighing. “We were all bothered for your sake. We thought we’d lose you in the accident. Why would you do such a thing to yourself?”

  “ I don’t remember why.” She say.

Mrs Sotomayor furrowed her brows. “ You just decided to jam a trailer for nothing? Sonia, what you did was unfair, to yourself and to us. We all had an heart attack for your sake.”

“ I’m so sorry. Was the accident severe?”

“Yes. Like I said, we thought you wouldn’t survive the incident.”

  “ I don’t remember anything. I don’t remember what happened. . . or why? It’s just… it’s just all blank.” She said, sadly.

“ The doctors said you have a loss of memory but thankfully, it’s only temporal. As days goes by, you’ll recover. Hopefully.”

“ How long will I have stay with the. . . loss of memory? “

  “ Days? Weeks?”

“ Days? Weeks?” She repeated with a scoff. “ Why weeks? I feel like I’m totally empty right now. Like there’s some thing I should know but I don’t any more. I… I want to remember, mom, I want to remember what it is.”

“ You will, dear. You don’t have to rush it.”

She sighed softly. “ I know but. . . days and weeks are too far to recover all I have lost.”

The door open, John walked in with two strawberry pizzas in his hands. “I bought one specifically for you.” He said to Sonia who opened her hand to receive it. “And this one is for you.” He said to Mrs Sotomayor.

“You don’t expect only I to eat all this.” Mrs Sotomayor blurted.

“ I’m not hungry.” He refused.

“You better do justice to this with me.” She said playfully.

She took a quarter of the pizza, grinding it in her mouth. “ Thanks John, for this.” He look at her, “I never expected this.”

“ You don’t have to thank me, I’m here for you. You’re my duty. Whatever it is you want, just tell me, the bill is on me.”

“ Hey, I’m a business woman, okay? I can take good care of myself.” She bragged.

“ I know but yet, you still need the bill on me.”

Mrs Sotomayor smiled. “ I think you should do as he said, Sonia. Besides, he’ll be your husband very soon.” She added.

“ You don’t have to remind me of that, mom.” She picked another quarter of the pizza, biting a mouthful of it.

She exchange glance with John. They were staring at each other for long, Mrs Sotomayor didn’t want to interfere, all she did was to smile.

“I’m happy you didn’t forget about us. You know, I was scared when mother said you lost a part of your memory. “

  She smiled.

“ Or have you forgotten our past memories already?” He asked to be sure.

“ No. No, why would I ever forget about us?” She was calm for a while, then she said. “ I wouldn’t.”

  “ I’m happy.”

Mrs Sotomayor stood up, “I’ll leave you two alone.” She excused herself and left the room.

They both laughed. “She always does that whenever I’m with a guy. Most times with my ex’s. “

“ How many ex’s do you have?” He asked.

Sonia made a thoughtful face, “ Two.”

“ Two?” He repeated. “ That’s surprising, you know?”

“Yeah, I know. Then, I wasn’t much of a good dater. I was so much into my business than to men. I’m still surprise we’re standing.” She touches his hand. “ And I believe we’ll keep standing together. Forever.”

Sonia was seriously reading through the lines of the novel in her hand. It was her favourite book.

Mrs Sotomayor had brought it for her before she left with John. They had decided to take a break for the night. Sonia was left alone in the room.

It was her last day, and she will be discharged out of the hospital by tomorrow.

She flipped to the next page, still reading through the lines. The book was getting more interesting at each pages, all Sonia could do is to smile.

There came a knock on the door, interrupting Sonia from her moment. She shut the book, staring at the door.

She watched the young man enter her ward, offering a smile at her. She returned the smile, but it fades immediately.

  “Hi.” He greets.

“Hey. Who are you?” She asked.

“I am… Uhm… I’m a very good friend of your father and. . . I checked on you but they told me you were here. I’m sorry for what happened.” He said sympathetically.

“ I have never seen you before.” She said.

“ Yeah, I… I hardly show up. Though, we most times meet at his office or mine.”

“ Oh, I see. Well, thanks for coming over. I really appreciate it.”

“ It’s nothing. How are you feeling?” He asked.

“ Great. I’m feeling more better.” She didn’t seem to notice her manners, he’s been standing since he walked in. “Oh, forgive my manners. Please have a seat.” She offered.

“Thanks.” He sat comfortably on the chair.

“What’s your name if you don’t mind?” She asked.

“ It’s Nomed. My name is Nomed Sacrod.”

“Well, it’s nice meeting you, Nomed. My name is Sonia Sotomayor.”

Sonia returned back to the book she was reading, but somehow she got uncomfortable with the awkward silence.

He was sitting with her and no one was talking. She didn’t know what to say, and nothing to offer to him which wasn’t her fault.

He stands up all of a sudden. “Are you leaving?” Sonia asked.

“I forgot something in my car. I’ll be back soon.” He says, and left the room.

Sonia felt a bit embarrassed at her attitude. She was busy with her novel while she’s got a visitor who came to check on her.

She was still blaming herself for her attitude when the door opened again, he walked in with a flower in his hand.

“I brought this for you.” He presented it to her.

Sonia was so delighted at the offer. Her lips beamed with the broadest smile as she took the flower from him.

“Thank you so much.” She sniffed in the sweet scent of the flower, staring happily at it. “I really appreciate this.”

“Oh, it’s nothing.” He sat back on the chair. “ I don’t have much but I hope you can manage this. Though, it’s a little. . .”

“I don’t know who you are, and you brought me this.” She sniffs again. “ This is the greatest gift I have ever received.”
