MARA

The face on the security monitor made every man in the room go silent.

Dante stood behind me, one hand resting on the edge of the desk. His injured shoulder was freshly bandaged, but he looked ready to tear the entire estate apart with his bare hands.

“Zoom in,” he ordered.

The technician enlarged the image.

The figure wore a Blackwood security uniform, a cap pulled low over his face, and black gloves. He entered the girls’ corridor at 11:39 p.m.

Seven minutes before the lights went out.

“He disabled the cameras from inside the security room,” Luca said, his voice strained. “Whoever this is knew the system.”

Dante's eyes hardened.

“Bring every guard on duty into the hall. Nobody leaves this estate.”

I studied the footage again.

“Stop.”

The technician froze the image.

I pointed at the figure's left hand.

“Look at his wrist.”

A silver watch glinted beneath his sleeve.

Dante glanced at me. “What about it?”

“His right shoulder is lower than his left. He's carrying a weapon under the opposite side of his jacket. And look at his feet. He's favoring his left leg.”

Luca frowned. “You got all that from a blurry video?”

“I got it from watching people who expected to kill me.”

Dante turned fully toward me.

There it was again—that strange look he sometimes gave me, as if he had married a woman expecting a porcelain doll and discovered a loaded gun instead.

“You were military,” he said.

It wasn't a question.

“Among other things.”

“How high did you rank?”

“High enough to know that asking questions at the wrong time gets people killed.”

One corner of his mouth lifted.

“God help the man who ever underestimated you.”

I looked back at the screen. “He already has.”

Dante's expression changed. Pride flickered in his eyes, dark and unmistakable.

“My wife,” he murmured, almost to himself. “A woman who can read an armed man's movements from a security recording.”

“Your wife,” I reminded him, “is about to find out why someone inside your house wants your daughters dead.”

His amusement disappeared.

“Luca. Assemble the men.”

DANTE

I had expected a beautiful woman when I finally met Mara.

The photograph attached to our marriage papers had shown a woman with a soft face, full lips, and eyes that seemed too gentle for the world I inhabited. I had assumed she would be frightened of my reputation, dependent on my money, and grateful for whatever protection my name offered.

I had been spectacularly wrong.

She stood in my security room with a bandaged arm, blood still staining the edge of her sleeve, and examined an assassination attempt as if she were planning a morning exercise.

I should have been angry that she kept taking risks.

Instead, I found myself watching her.

The way she stood. The way she listened. The way she noticed everything while everyone else stared at the screen.

She wasn't trying to impress me.

That was what impressed me most.

I had spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from me. Money. Territory. Influence. Fear.

Mara wanted answers, and she seemed perfectly willing to fight the entire Blackwood empire to get them.

A dangerous woman.

A remarkable woman.

And, to my growing astonishment, my wife.

I moved closer, lowering my voice so the others wouldn't hear.

“When this is over, you're going to tell me everything about your military career.”

“When this is over, you can ask.”

“And if I don't like your answers?”

She looked up at me, her lips curving slightly.

“Sleep on the sofa.”

I almost laughed.

I had threatened men with death for less disrespect than she showed me before breakfast. Yet when she looked at me like that, I found myself wanting to hear what she'd say next.

I was beginning to understand that marrying Mara had not brought a weak woman into my house.

It had brought me someone who could stand beside me when the bullets started flying.

And I was proud of it.

More proud than I cared to admit.

MARA

We found the first body in the west stairwell.

A guard lay facedown beside the wall, his throat cut and his uniform missing. Blood had soaked into the expensive carpet.

Luca crouched beside him.

“Thomas,” he muttered. “He's been with us for six years.”

Dante's face became unreadable.

“Check his identification. Find out who last saw him alive.”

A crash sounded from the upper floor.

I was moving before anyone else reacted.

“Mara!” Dante shouted.

I ignored him.

A man in a stolen uniform burst through the doorway ahead, raising a pistol. I dropped behind a marble column as bullets shattered a vase above me.

The guards opened fire.

The man retreated into the hallway.

I sprinted after him.

He rounded a corner and caught me with a hard blow to the ribs. We crashed into a table, sending glass and silverware flying across the floor.

He was heavier than me, but he made one mistake.

He assumed I would fight him like an ordinary woman.

I drove my knee into his stomach, trapped his gun arm, and twisted until the weapon fell. He punched me across the mouth. I tasted blood.

I answered with an elbow to his jaw.

He staggered.

I swept his legs from beneath him and slammed him onto the floor. Before he could recover, I pressed his own pistol against his cheek.

“Who sent you?”

He spat at my face.

I struck him with the weapon.

“Try again.”

He laughed through his bloody mouth.

“Your husband is already dead. He just doesn't know it yet.”

A second attacker appeared behind me.

I heard Dante shout my name.

The gunshot came first.

The attacker dropped, blood spreading across his chest.

Dante stood at the end of the corridor, his pistol smoking.

For a moment, his eyes met mine.

Then he looked at the man beneath me.

“Get him downstairs,” he ordered. “I want answers before sunrise.”

Two guards dragged the prisoner away.

Dante approached me, his gaze moving over my face.

“You're bleeding.”

“It's a scratch.”

“Your lip is split.”

“I've had worse.”

His jaw flexed.

“That doesn't make it acceptable.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Are you going to scold me or kiss me?”

The words escaped before I could reconsider them.

Silence fell between us.

Dante's gaze dropped briefly to my mouth.

When he looked back into my eyes, the air seemed to tighten.

“Careful, Mara,” he said softly. “I might choose the second option.”

For once, I had no immediate answer.

He took a clean handkerchief from his pocket and gently pressed it to my lip.

His fingers brushed my cheek.

The man who had ordered an execution without blinking was touching me as though I were something precious.

It unsettled me more than the gunfire.

“I'm not fragile, Dante.”

“I know.”

His thumb paused near my jaw.

“That's what makes it difficult to look away.”

Before I could respond, his radio crackled.

“Boss, we have a problem. The prisoner is dead.”

Dante closed his eyes briefly.

“How?”

“He bit down on something concealed in his tooth. By the time we reached the interrogation room, he was gone.”

I stepped away from Dante.

“Someone expected him to be captured.”

“Someone expected him to die before he could talk,” Dante corrected.

Then Luca's voice came through the radio again.

“Boss, we recovered a second phone. There's a message scheduled to send to every rival family in the city at six this morning.”

Dante took the device.

His expression darkened as he read.

“What does it say?” I asked.

He turned the screen toward me.

DANTE BLACKWOOD IS WEAK. HIS WIFE IS HIS NEWEST LIABILITY. THE BLACKWOOD EMPIRE IS OPEN FOR THE TAKING.

Beneath the message was a list of names—rival bosses, corrupt officials, weapons dealers, and men who had been waiting years to see Dante fall.

This wasn't simply an attack on our family.

It was a declaration of war.

Dante looked at me, his eyes burning with cold fury.

“They think you make me weak.”

I wiped the blood from my lip.

“Then let's disappoint them.”

His smile was slow, dangerous, and entirely without warmth.

He held out his hand.

I took it.

“Welcome to the Blackwood war, wife,” he said.

I tightened my grip on his fingers.

“Darling, I was in the war before you came home.”

For the first time that night, Dante looked genuinely awed.

And when he raised my hand to his lips, kissing my bloodstained knuckles in front of his men, I knew he wasn't ashamed of the woman he had married.

He was proud.

But somewhere across the city, a message was already reaching the rival families.

By sunrise, every Mafia boss in the region would know that Dante Blackwood had returned.

And every one of them would be deciding whether to kneel—or draw a gun.
