Chapter eleven
The sun was overhead. She felt its diverging rays on her skin like million stabs, a glimpse at her wristwatch confirmed it as it read 12:01 noon.  How time flies. A loud groan from her tummy etched a frown on her face whilst her hand rubbed it gently; Anticipation getting the best of her, She woke up as early as six for a job hunt that she hadn't had time to chew on the slightest edible thing around. Her eyes darted, making sure its loudness didn't pick awareness. Her mouth released a small puff of air in relief when no one did. Gotta ingest something, she thought. But not until I'm over this. Zaphrina was Currently standing in front of a grocery store where she mentally recited a short prayer. Hoping not to have a repetition of previous stores encounter. She clung her bag a little tighter than it already was before reaching for the glass door.  Fortunately, there wasn't a population at the cashiers. She walked straight to a

The sound of her ringtone ghosted a dizzy groan out her lips but her eyes won't open. They were still sleep coated and resulted in her hand playing the role of her eyes with the help of her ears. Zaphrina outstretched her hand to the direction of the ringtone but tapped on an empty surface and then a book, now her lamp. Damn phone! "Hello..." Her gravelly voice dawdled immediately at the phones hold. "Will you get your ass off that bed and come help me prepare for a dinner date tonight?" "Aren't you aware of the time?" Her voice was now slowly but surely diving back into sleep like her eyes did. "I am, reason why I called." Her hand sluggishly directed the phone to a pair of barely opened eyes. Nothing reported clear to them before but the blurred figures at the top left of her screen were enough to hit her eyes open.  9...wait!! Perhaps her eyes were playing tricks on her. A couple of eye blinks got the fo

"This should be enough to complete Lola and Lorna's tuition fee." Liza carefully deposited the flaxen envelope on her mother's bed. It was still very early in the morning when Liza had decided on letting her mum know about the money Zoe and Co had gifted her after six hours of mind battles on whether to let her know or not, fear of the lady inquiring on its Genesis. Her mum immediately made her way to the neatly arranged bed where Liza sat. The lady flipped open the object and her eyes came in contact with dollar bills. They widened at the immediate sight and began fluctuating from the envelope to her daughter. "How much is in here and where is this from?" The lady poured. "Three thousands." Liza said flatly, trying to wave away the latter question, but knowing her mum too well, she would insist on the question she was trying to avoid. "It's a token from friends and co workers. You know...to keep me alive while I search for a new job." She answered an

She woke up to the first two seconds into the intolerant noisiness of her alarm and stopped it without the slightest hesitation. It was only five-thirty in the morning; Enough time to tidy up and relax over a cup of hot chocolate before embarking on a long journey. She made sure to round up in quietness not wanting to disturb her mum.  She had breakfast while standing, her light brown eyes focused on nothing but the kitchen window, she gently sipped the hot brown liquid inside her favorite white mug as she watched the sunrise like a baby, painting the once black sky into a bright blue one with little to no clouds roaming it, however, some birds flew from one tree to the other chirping and chanting their mind soothing melodies. Nature was indeed wonderful. She snapped out of her reverie as she heard a door creak. Her mum must be awake already. Just a couple of hours left to report to work on time, Zaphrina hurriedly wished her mum a good d

Zaphrina had managed to embed her body into the piece of revolting black dress which was given to her by the butler--Neville--upon her arrival at the maiden's quarters. The uniform was an unpleasant baggy cotton material owning a white rounded lacy extension around the neck as the collar, It was of a despicable length; as it oddly fled a couple of meters below her knees and to crown the gruesome collection were the uneven pleats, thankfully hidden beneath a white apron worn over her waist. The combination concealed her youthfulness as it only portrayed a look from the '80s instead.Neville had led her into her work unit which got her face awe-plastered as she tried so hard to gulp in its perfection, perhaps perfect was an understatement. The chivalrous man carefully pointed out where whatever she needed could be found, she must admit he wasn't a chip off her imagination. She had pictured a miserable, scarred face individual which was immediately contradicted wit

She wasn't vulnerable, neither was she...submissive. Well, scratch the latter, for it was a requirement for a successful employer-employee relationship.  Zaphrina had exited the heated study and was headed to her unit fuming red. She needed no one to tell her her ears had detonated a fountain of vapor. Her heart felt heavy all of a sudden, must have magnetized some neighborhood hatred, ready for exhibition on just one person. Was he going to use them for his own sick pleasure? He better not, she wouldn't let him rub mud in her face nor Intimidate her. No way. Her lips quietly carved the words.  The last thing she would live to do was to let people of his caliber oppress her. They aren't born yet. "Zaphrina?"  The sudden audibility of the faintly familiar voice got her missing the last step, she swiftly attached both hands to the balustrade to prevent her face from the cold embrace of the marbles. A head snap to her left,

Zaphrina sauntered into the kitchen in her new uniform looking so happy and if she was asked 'why?' she won't have had just an answer to that but rather, answers. First off, she was early to work in contrast to the previous day: thanks to Andrew who had resurrected her old BMW from the land of the dead. And secondly, she was saved from the cruel hands of the baggy uniform.  Earlier that day, entering the change room of the maiden quarters with her uniform in hand, she had planned on questioning Anna--a brunette friend she made the previous day and who was far too petite for her liking--on what must have possibly prompted her to keep her uniform in her drawer until she was later on proved wrong when Anna told her she was innocent. Apparently, all uniforms seemed to have shrunk in less than twenty-four hours. Then came this piece of flashback, where Marley ordered a seamstress. Oh shit! Was she the cause of the change and why? Did she look ugly in the unif

He felt better, he had to admit the soup was surprisingly effective. In no time, he was standing before his dressing mirror adjusting his burgundy tie stuck in a waistcoat underneath a double-breasted jacket, his eyes still drooled a little and contained barely conspicuous bags beneath them but it didn't matter since he already had a solution to that. His once dried and sandy throat was now manageably moist. It was already ten in the morning, three hours late for work. Good thing he was his own boss. He wore his dark shades and directed himself out of home, but before doing so, he thought about rendering the kitchen a little visit. He had no idea why his mind and legs led him there but he was sure his mouth will do things once in there. Perhaps apologize to her for acting like an asshole or to thank her for the phenomenal, and delicious soup she had made some time ago. But then again, was he capable of erupting any sign of gratitude to her even though he owed her so much. No. That

Zaphrina parked her car just where she was told; an underground parking lot containing sophisticated automobiles. On her way out she sighted a coal-black Nissan in an isolated corner and she immediately knew who it referred to. She rushed out of the parking lot, walked through the large automatic swinging door with the N.T logo on either side. The air inside the tremendously huge well-lit room stunk of professionalism. Everything was just like she imagined; Pretty ladies and gentlemen in costly outfits parading from one end to another, their heels chiming songs of arrogance with each step made on the immaculate white marbles. The smiles exchanged between those carried away into discussions were priceless and professional. Those seated before their computers wore the look of loyalty. Zaphrina suddenly found herself envious. "How may I be of assistance miss?" Her head snapped to the direction of the vocalist--the receptionist--who donned a navy blue suit, her forest-green eyes,

He was again deserted, in his office like in his life. It should've been something he's used to but sadly, he wasn't. Marley was basking in misery unlike he was before Zaphrina showed up. From the moment she walked out the door, for some reason, he felt like she took along a part of him. That part of him he had never known existed before. After their hampered encounter, he acknowledged the anguish she imposed in him especially after her sad but slightly reassuring confession. For some reason, he despised to think he wasn't the cause of her tears and for some other, he was glad he hadn't really hurt her though he was eager to admit guilty of the perpetration. He uttered profanity as he slid a little deeper into his chair. She was...Yes, she was slowly worming her way in, he didn't know how she did that but she was getting successful at it and he didn't like that. Not the least. His door gently swung open exhibiting a slender blonde owning a pai
