Chapter 21
As the tray slid out of the oven and Violet managed to place it on the cooling tray while remaining burn-free, an enormous sense of pride filled her. After Violet’s last encounter with Emily, Mrs. Chaplin told her it was probably best to return to the kitchen. Violet didn’t mind, surprisingly. The duties involved in preparing the house’s meals had become familiar and the familiarities brought her a strange sense of comfort. Plus, none of the other duties had such good smells. The only drawback was her wrist.

Chapter 22
Violet scrubbed the counters with singular focus or at least she was trying to give it her complete and total attention. It seemed her mind was intent on making her painfully aware of how much her life was a state of complete and total disaster. Her parents were dead, murdered, and Violet was starting to doubt the chance they would ever get justice. Her real friends seemed to have forgotten she ever existed, and the ‘friends’ she had now would kill her as soon as they discovered what she was. Then there was her birthday. It was her birthday today and she got to celebrate it by cooking food for her parents’ murderer. She was caught between wanting to scream at everyone and throw the knives she used to prepare their food at them and curling up in a corner and sobbing as hard as she could. Much as she tried, a few tears had escaped. Thankfully, no one noticed them.

Chapter 23
Violet walked down the empty street filled with large homes. Her pace was slow, giving her time to think. The kiss with Nolan kept running through her mind. Nothing would come of it. Nolan must have been caught up in the moment or something and the kiss had been a mistake. Victoria knew that and had no plans of making a big deal about it, but still, the kiss was nice. She didn’t see the harm in enjoying the memory of it. It wasn’t like she had a lot to make her smile much anymore.Though her rational side argued they had more important things to think about, like getting into the alpha’s office. The smile fell from Violet’s face and she sighed. Sticking her hands in her pockets she looked down at her feet as she walked. The plan was to wait until Monday evening while everyone was at dinner. It seemed like the safest option. Though was any option safe?

Chapter 24
Violet walked through the Alpha’s mansion with a cup of coffee in her hands. She wasn’t much of a coffee drinker but holding the warm cup helped relaxed her nervousness. Tomorrow was the day. The day she was going to make her move. She replayed the plan over and over in her head. As soon as the servers began serving dinner she would go upstairs to the alpha’s office. She would have a good thirty minutes at best to finish her search. The room wasn’t that big, it really shouldn’t take her that long to search the office.Stopping by the staircase that led up to the second floor, Violet took in a shaky breath. Every time she thought of breaking into the office, Violet started getting this sick feeling. She leaned against the railing and took a minute to concentrate on her breathing. She stared into the caramel-colored liquid, feeling her nausea start to pass. Hearing someone, Viol

Chapter 25
Violet chewed on her lip as she moved the scrambled eggs on her plate. Thoughts of Nolan and their kiss wouldn’t leave her. She couldn’t believe that happened. Violet honestly figured the first had been a mistake, but there was no confusion on the second kiss. Nolan liked her… and she couldn’t deny it. Violet liked him too, despite that he could be a bit of a dick too. Typical bad boy. With a sigh, Violet rolled her eyes at herself. She was being lame, but still Violet did like Nolan and that was a problem. A big problem.First, liking him while lying about who she was made her feel so guilty her stomach was all twisted up which brought her to the second part. Nolan would hate her when he realized she was human. Hell, he might even be the first in line to ‘take her out.’  Her eyes stung at the idea of having him look at her with that cold look he had first given he

Chapter 26
Violet’s heart pounded in her chest as she carefully made her way towards the staircase. The sounds of people enjoying their dinner filtered through the house. That was probably the only reason Violet hadn’t fainted yet. If there is one thing she learned through all this is that she didn’t have a future in espionage. She was not, in fact, the next James Bond. As she reached the stairs, Violet paused and held her breath. She listened for anything that might hint someone was coming her way. Letting it out, Violet started up the stairs torn between running up and being careful, but slow.Every creak of the dark wood made her cringe as she went until she was finally on the second floor. Taking another deep breath, Violet she checked again for signs someone might be up there. Again, there was nothing. The only thing she heard was the soft hum of the A.C. She took one cautious step towards the

Chapter 27
“Nolan, it’s a good thing you’re here,” Emily said, turning her back to Violet. Tightening her grip on the book, Violet stood and touched her lip where Emily had hit her. She winced with the flair of pain. Her fingertips came back bloody. Emily had done more than clip her. The werewolf had busted her lip, at the very least. Violet’s jaw on that side was starting to throb with pain. Fear started to slice through Violet. This was just going to be the start. If her luck stayed the same, her death wasn’t going to be a quick one. “Yeah, I’m sure you are,” Nolan said as Violet got to her feet. “This is it, Emily. You’re out. The alpha will have your head for this.”“Will he?” Emily shot back. “I don’t know how this pathetic maid turned you against me, but you’r

Chapter 28
Violet hesitated for a moment. Part of her was sure this was a trap, but trap or not, this was her chance to get answers.  Swallowing, she followed the alpha out of the cell past Mrs. Chaplin and Nolan. Her shoulders hunched up as they fell behind her and the little hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She took a slow deep breath then let it out, as they ascended the stairs. He led her to the second floor and back to his office that she’d just been in. “Close the door, Helena,” he said, taking a seat on the edge of his desk then waved a hand for Violet to sit in one of the chairs near the front of his desk. Violet didn’t sit down. She stood, crossing her arms. A small smile appeared on the corner of the alpha’s mouth and he nodded. When the door was closed the smile dropped. “So, I suppose you have a l

Chapter 29
Violet woke suddenly, sitting up. She was still fully dressed and there was a headache threatening to turn her brain into mush. She wasn’t sure what woke her until she heard the knocking on the door. Getting up from the bed, she walked over to the door. Mrs. Chaplin had a tray in her hands and said, “Breakfast” as soon as Violet opened it. “Okay,” Violet said, not sure what else to say, and stepped aside to let the governess into the room. She felt awkward as she watched the older werewolf set the tray on a small table next to the wall ahead of Violet. Now the truth was out, she didn’t know what to expect from anyone anymore.  Closing the door, Violet sat in one of the two chairs. “So, uh, what happens now?” Mrs. Chaplin sat down across from Violet and blew out a breath. “That, I suppose, is up to you and yo

Chapter 30
Once the alpha had left, Violet paced the room, trying to assimilate everything the alpha had told her. Jeremy wasn’t really Jeremy but this Richard Morgan? She sighed and ran her hands through her hair. More than ever, Violet wished her mother was there. If only her mom had told her about all of this before, but now Violet could only guess who was telling her the truth and who was lying to her. She paced the room as her thoughts tumbled and built up in her head until she felt like it was going to explode. Needing to get out of that room, Violet left and started to go down the stairs when she stopped halfway. What if she saw Mia or someone else she knew? Would they all know who she was human? Furthermore, would they know the alpha claimed to be her father? Oddly, having the truth known made her feel more like an intruder than she felt when she was lying to everyone.
