I hadn't expected Ryan to react this way. He was kind of moody, only because I had told him that I would be working as a maid. Thank goodness I didn't tell him I would be working for James Robert. He would be extremely pissed off.  "Ryan, I really—" "No, no." He shook his head. He turned to me, his eyes locked to mine. "You really can't do that job. How can a whole Ryan Arthur's girlfriend be some kind of maid? That's crazy. I might not be as rich as I used to, but I am comfortable enough to take care of you and your family." "Ryan…" I shifted close to him, and took his hand as I pouted. "I understand your point. You're a big man. Your girl isn't supposed to be someone's maid. But, the pay is really good. I went for the interview yesterday, and I met all the qualifications. Besides, you seriously don't expect me to always be dependent on you, right?" He lowered his eyebrows at me, t

I was starting to wonder how someone could be this cute, yet dumb. This wasn't the right time to think about his beauty, but seriously, he was handsome. His sapphire blue eyes, pointed nose, and small lips, they all caught my attention. His full eyebrows quirked at me, which made me realize that I had been staring at him for a while.  "I asked a question." My voice held so much huskiness, anger, and a bit of shame. I was embarrassed. "Do you need something? Holding your maid's hand is crazy." "Oh. Sorry." He released my hand. Of course, his apology was filled with so much sarcasm.  I glared a little. "Thank you. So, can I take my leave now?" "So much confidence, woman." He put his hands behind him, fixing his gaze at me. "Hope you know I'm the boss? This isn't the way to speak with one's boss." I scoffed. "Sorry, sir. And, one's boss shouldn't hold his maid that way."

"We'll be scanning your dad's brain for a second time," the doctor announced over the phone.  I let out a low sigh, feeling a bit tense. They were going to scan dad's brain again? But, why? "Is there a problem now? Should I come over?" I asked.  "No, no. Not at all." Since she didn't sound tired or worried, I guessed there was no need for me to be worried. "Because of last night's treatment, we have to do another scan. It's completely fine. There's nothing to worry about." I sighed in relief. "Oh, that's good then. So, I'll be visiting the hospital tomorrow. Once I'm done working, I'll send you a call." "Good," she remarked. "Take care, okay? And ensure Vicki's good." "Thanks." "You're welcome." As soon as she hung up the call, I walked into the kitchen of James' mansion. Vicki and about two other maids were

"Will you be visiting Mom and Dad tonight?" Vicki asked, as she put some carrots into the tall and large fridge in James' kitchen.  I sighed. "Yeah, yeah. Seriously, no matter how I try not to feel bad for not always visiting them, it just doesn't work." "You shouldn't feel bad." She closed the door of the fridge, picked up a napkin, and began cleaning the counters. "At least, all we're doing is to work. If Mom and Dad were conscious, they'd completely understand this." "Uh. Guess so." I nodded. I took a napkin as well, assisting her to clean the counters. For some reason, she was staring at me so much. It felt like she was being hesitant to say something.  "What?" I raised an eyebrow at her.  She shrugged. "Donno. I just feel like something's up with you. Is there something you need to tell me?" I blinked as if I was confu

I rolled my hands in a fist, trying to stop them from shivering so much. Wait, this was really confusing. Mom needed to do a heart transplant? Still gawking, a tear left my eye. I moved my lips, but wasn't able to state a word. Shock was an understatement of the emotion that was swaying through me.  She glanced at the paper in her hands, and sighed again. "She's always had a heart issue. I guess you know that. After the accident, we've been trying so much to deal with it. For a while, we've been noticing that her heart hasn't been pumping blood properly. Only last night, it skipped beats. And, at a point, it stopped beating. We were a bit nervous, thinking she wouldn't survive. So, if she doesn't undergo the surgery, her heart might eventually stop working." I pulled my hand over my mouth, blocking the whimpers that were about to leave it. I sniffled, and just kept staring at her.  "I reall

Terror raced through me as the doctor stated the results from Dad's scan test. I clinged to my seat as if I had lost control of my movements, my feet and hands shivering. The way my heart raced fast, made it seem like I would pass out soon, or even pass on. I hadn't ever felt this terrible.  "H-How would we pay for this?" Vicki flattered. "In a month, I'll be granted five hundred thousand dollars from the government, as a result of the connection from my fiance. Five hundred is the limit they can offer for support. Now that my dad's suffering from this, what'll happen?" The doctor furrowed her eyebrows. She seemed worried and confused. "In a month? Oh, wait. Haven't I told you that this is urgent? One month is really too far." "Uh, okay." Tears left Vicki's eyes as she kept speaking. She was trying to be confident, but it just wasn't working. "I-I've asked for donations. What about two weeks? That should do, right?"

James' father stood up from the couch, and hurried to me. His eyes were broadened. He moved his lips, but he was unable to say anything. I tightened my fist, gulped, resisting the itch to cry.  "My dear, you want to… get married to my son?" he questioned.  I nodded, wearing a stern look. "Yes. I'm not just accepting the proposal. I want it to be done as soon as possible. If you want it to happen in two days, so be it," I announced.  He gaped. "Two days? Wow, that's great! I don't mind at all. I can—" "Woah, woah." James walked to us. He held his hand up, wrinkling his face as if he was irritated. "I'm the one getting married. Two days is too short for me. It doesn't even… make any sense." I turned to him. "If you prolong it, I might have no choice but to change my mind." "No, no. That won't happen." His dad stood in front of

"Mrs. Harper, please, calm down. I'm trying my best," I pleaded with my parents' doctor over the phone.  "My dear…" Her breath was shaky, and she sounded so tired. "I understand this. It's just that this is quite disturbing. Once again, she suffered a cardiac arrest. This time around, it really, really felt like it would kill her." I raked my fingers into my hair, trying to hold back my tears. "Please, I need you to understand that I'm trying my best. In forty eight hours, I'll settle the bills. She'll be fine, I promise." "Okay." She sighed again. "Hope so. Anyway, take care of yourself. Bye for now." "Bye," I added, and swiped my finger past my phone screen to hang up the call. Keeping the phone in my pocket, I turned to Vicki who had her back on me, as she stared at her reflection through the rectangular shaped mirror that was hung on the wall. "Are you really going to say nothing?" I

After spending my day at James' place, I had come home to take some time to relax. Well, probably because Vicki was very annoyed, she hadn't come home with me. I had tried calling her a couple of times, but her phone wasn't going through. She had switched it off, I guessed.   Closing the cupboards in the kitchen, I headed to the living room. Settling to sit on the couch, I threw my back against it, closed my eyes, and inhaled hard. Trying to get rid of my crazy thoughts, I tapped my feet against the floor. But, too bad for me, these thoughts were overwhelming. They weren't leaving my head.  Particularly, it was the lips. James' lips. How they had grabbed mine. How he had kissed me as if I was his; as if I didn't have a boyfriend. It hurt so much. "Ow!" I yelped and flinched when the knock on the door cut me off my thoughts.  Running my fingers into my hair, I sighed, standing up t

In less than twenty four hours, my marriage with James would be finalized. My name would change to Serene Robert. Anytime I felt bad about it, I convinced myself that things would eventually work out fine. After all, my parents would survive. They would be alive to see their grandchildren. Of course, I wasn't planning to let James touch me yet. However, I had to make some plans, whether or not they were good ones.  "Your dress will arrive by ten." Sherri pressed the tip of her pen against her lip, sucking her teeth, as she glued her eyes to the to-do list in her hand. She sighed, staring up at me. "Will go and get the cake ready. In the meantime, you can do whatever you wanna. You can take a nap or something." A weak smile formed on my lips. Smiling was all I could do for now. I was tired of crying. "Sherri," I called, my voice low and scattered. "Will you be able to take care of Ryan? How'd you help him get rid of the heartbreak? Are y
