Chapter 11: Unnecessary Dangers
Argent             “Extend your fist this way to avoid hurting yourself.” I extend my fist to show Penelope what I want her to do. After a long bout of hot, sweaty sex, I pulled her from my bed and made her change into a sports bra and yoga shorts so that I could teach her how to fight and protect herself in case I need her to.              I know I’m teaching her how to fight, but all Penelope can do is gape at me. She looks like every man’s wet dream in her little shorts and top. I have to stifle a groan every time she moves.              She’s sleek and curved like a cat. I have to stop talking when she licks her lips and slides her hands down my chest and abs. “Are you listening to me?” I ask.    &nb

Chapter 12: Words said in a moment of passion are still true
Penelope              He didn’t say it back. I mean, I didn’t expect him to, and I was so exhausted that I blurted it out without a thought. However, I can’t pretend that I didn’t mean what I said. I’m in love with him. Of course, I should have chosen a better venue to say it. Or even waited a while longer, but I can’t deny that I felt it. However, in the light of day, all I feel is regret. And it’s only worse because he’s not lying next to me this morning. Over the past several weeks, he has made sure to wake up next to me or wake me up before he goes, but he didn’t this time.              Heart in my throat, I swallow down my trepidation, rise from the bed, and reach for my dress. I’m not sure that I

Chapter 13: Some decisions are not easy
Argent              I blow out a breath and watch as Penelope walks out the door. Hearing her tell me that she loves me is a painful yet exhilarating feeling. However, I meant what I said to her. I need time. She’s everything to me, but I’m not sure that I’m ready to move beyond where we are.              I can’t think about this anymore. There are far too many things running through my mind.              One of them is what I should do about Sebastian. So many questions had arisen from my search when I had no doubts before. I know, Sebastian. He and I trained together. We were closer than brothers. It makes no sense to me how he would have been so sloppy in handling his disappearance. Even the way he handled getting rid of the evidence of his

Chapter 14: Unexpected development
Penelope              Being in love is scary. Especially when you realize that you’re alone in love. It has been days since my encounter in Argent’s house. He texted me the other day to inform me he would be out of town, but that was the only communication I received. It’s killing me that he hasn’t told me anything. I don’t know if we’re over or we’re taking a break. It’s maddening.                Not wanting to waste a beautiful day indoors, I decided to go to the local bazaar. Lyria and I discovered the bazaar a couple of months ago. Like in the states, local merchants meet in the town square to sell their wares. The bazaar is alive with street performers, restaurants, and small kiosks that showcase various merchandise. Lyria and I loved it.     &n

Chapter 15: I’d follow you
Argent             The flight is uneventful, and Logan instantly meets me as soon as I get to the airport.             “It’s good to see you, Argent.” He shakes my hand stiffly.             “It’s good to see you too, Logan,” I reply firmly.             Logan turns and gestures for me to follow. “I know you’re in a hurry, so I took the liberty of making a reservation at a nearby restaurant where we can sit and talk.”             I nod my head and follow him. “Thanks, Logan. I truly appreciate you taking the time to help.”         &nb

Chapter 16: It is love
Penelope                           There’s nothing in this world that I love more than waking up in Argent’s arms. I love that the first things that I see when I wake up are his golden abs, muscular chest, and wide shoulders. I love how his golden hair looks when it’s tousled, and the way his long lashes rest snuggly against his chiseled cheeks, and I love stroking his hair when we make love. His curls are silky and thick like the softest pelt. Unfortunately, he’s out of town, and all I can do is remember and worry about him.              Thankfully, Lyria came home earlier than expected and helped distract me from my worries. I lean my arms back against the lounge chair as the sweet rays of the sun caresses my face, and the sounds of the birds chirpin

Chapter 17: Targets to eliminate
Argent               I reach for my phone, and I dial Mateo’s number. Logan signals for me to proceed as soon as he scrambles my location. From Mateo’s point of view, my location will show that I am in L.A. instead of Manaus.               “Argent?” Mateo answers quickly.               Thankfully, I never confided with Mateo about our mission to assassinate William Kazik. I’m sure that he would have told Irving and jeopardized the whole mission if he had known. The New York branch, Logan and I, agreed to keep our plan as private as possible. The only reason Jaxon’s men are involved is that they all have a personal grievance against Kazik.               “Mateo, I just received a call from a local

Chapter 18: New Venues
Penelope              “I love the knitted dress you bought. The color is perfect on you.” I tell Lyria as she rests her shopping bags on the couch. Violet slumps beside me on the couch and puffs out a couple of breaths. After her class ended, she and Violet came over.              “Yeah, and the sandals are gorgeous,” Violet says as she sorts through the sushi boxes they picked up on the way home. I like hanging out with my friends, yet, I can’t help the aching pit of anxiety that opens up in my gut when I think about what’s going on with Argent. I didn’t like seeing the cut and scrapes that he came home with last night, but it’s something that I have to accept if I want to be with him.              The men left h

Chapter 19: Old Wounds
ArgentGrim-faced, everyone steps into my office and takes a seat. Several of the men give Voodoo a wide berth as soon as he sits down. I can see why Sebastian and Phoenix say that the man is odd. There’s just something that screams warning when I look at him. He’s almost stiff and mechanical in his movements. His gaze examines the room until he found a spot that he was comfortable with, and his face remains blank.Logan and I stand in front of the desk and face the men.“I know you’re wondering why you’re here, Voodoo, but please bear with us,” Logan says.Voodoo nods.I lean on the desk and clasp my hands together as I consider how to begin. “First of all, we want to know how familiar you are with Irving?”Voodoo’s head snaps in my direction. “I don’t understand your question.” He mutters in a careful tone. I can see that I put him on alert, and that’s not what I

Chapter 20: From death’s door
Penelope              I didn’t think it was possible to miss someone when they’ve only been gone for hours, but that’s how I feel. I miss Argent. It might be that he finally confessed his love, but I feel like somehow our bond has solidified. I miss waking up next to him this morning. I miss peering down at his slumbering form as I place a gentle kiss on his jaw. The way his lashes slowly flutter open, giving me a view of his magnificent eyes. Or the way his lips arch into a sleepy smile as his hand rises to caress tendrils of my hair. It’s almost a physical ache that threatens to drown me.              I never thought that I’d fall in love with someone so deeply. I can’t complain, though, because Argent seems to be as enthralled by our newfound love as I am. He almost seemed reluctant to leave me.
