Chapter 10
Freja watched the sun rise above a snow bank while she waited for Zarek to finish his business. Pale pinks and blues painted the sky as the sun rose behind them, the bright orb waking everything that slept. Golden rays washed across Freja as she stood in a beam that cast through the trees, lighting up her body. She practically glowed. The sun hadn’t shown in three long days. Thanks to the storm Zarek and Freja had to extend their stay at the inn. For the rest of their stay they avoided touching again, Zarek choosing to sleep on the floor instead, much to her annoyance. Here and there was the occasional brushing of skin against skin momentarily, the small touch alone igniting sparks between the two. Freja had been on the last straw when she sun finally broke through the blizzard, the rays of light bringing her escape with it. Staying in confined spaces wasn’t

Chapter 11
Zarek wandered the streets his hood kept low while her searched for Freja. The village was busy as usual, the streets full of merchants and tradesman peddling their goods. Children ran to and fro as they chased each other with the occasional goat running along with three of them. He had left the tavern shortly after Freja to see her gone, having left the area in a rage. Telling her at least something about himself should’ve sufficed but he didn’t know who would be listening. There could’ve been enemies nearby hidden and he wouldn’t have known until it was too late. Much too late. For fuck sakes he was a King! He shouldn’t have to hide like a scared weakling, but here he was. Instead of chasing after his mate on foot he wanted to take to the sky but everyone in the village knew what he looked like in dragon form. They would know the true king was alive and it would get back to Tauric w

Chapter 12 - TW
** Triggering content within. Proceed with caution if domestic abuse is sensitive to you. ** “YOU FAILED! AGAIN!” Objects clattered as they fell to the floor with the swipe of Tauric’s arm. Glass shattered when he swept the other side of the desk. The Royal Councilman collectively took a step back, their eyes meeting one another’s with concern for the King. Tauric had spiraled further down the hole he had dug and they had just been alerted by messenger that the assassination attempt on the Slayer named Freja was a failure. Whispers had reached him and his most trusted men that the true King was within the castle walls with Freja. Time was running out. His squadron that he had sent out had failed to inform him of their arrival so he had to rely on messengers. Leaving the castle was a death sentence that he didn’t look forward to. “Your Ro

Chapter 13
Freja couldn’t help but hiss in pain as she washed the blood from her knuckles. What had been a bucket of clean water was now red from her injuries. The bastard hadn’t told her anything and she was nowhere closer to finding the Dragon King. She could still hear the sickening crack of his bones as her fists pounded his face to a pulp. Instead of using a knife to cut him to pieces like she wanted to, she had decided to exert her aggression in the best way she knew how. Pummeling the man with her fists until he blacked out. Fuck! No matter how hard she hit him he wouldn’t tell her where the true King was. Zarek had planted himself in the corner of the room with a hip against the wall while he watched. Something weird was going on that she couldn’t figure out. Throughout the interrogation the man kept gla

Chapter 14
The streets were busy with the citizens of Criker. Merchants on the sides were busy with haggling customers, their voices mingling with the wide array of others. High in the sky the sun shone brightly, casting warmth onto the frigid city. People moving around helped to warm up the streets with the occasional fire pit outside a business shop. Cressa bundled in her cloak as she made her way through the city. She had a vague idea of where to go based off of what she heard the guards gossiping about in the castle. Reports came in from scattered spies hourly. Most seemed to be fake but she hoped the one she was relying on was true. It had to be true. The King was needed and she was sick of him taking his sweet time. Zarek needed to kill Tauric so she wouldn’t have to feel his hands on her again. Wouldn’t have to smell him or hear him. If she tried to kill him herself, it would end badly. Even

Chapter 15
The MidlandsThirteen Winters Ago   The trees rustled in the cool Autumn breeze. Wind rustled the leaves together in a soothing symphony. A few slivers of sunlight poked through the tall canopies high above Freja. Often she found herself at peace when she was alone with the forest. They were her friends - her only friends. Trees were the only friends that couldn’t hurt you with words. Trees couldn’t talk, at least, like a human anyways. The trees spoke is soft whispers as they danced upon their branches in the breeze. Some leaves even took a great lap to join her in the meadow where she lay in the flowers. Flowers were good friends, too, until they made your nose run. A few winters had passed but she still felt alone, even with her tree and flower frien

Chapter 16
Freja followed Zarek closely as they walked deeper into the woods, eventually reaching the clearing they were in those many days ago. Zarek’s tall muscular frame was a glory to see. The way his muscles rippled across his back and forearms made her most intimate parts soak with lust. He was a born predator but he moved like a sensual god. A god with a cock that more than satisfied her every night. His shaggy shoulder-length black hair was shiny in the light of the sun, falling in waves to frame his handsome face. Just watching his rump was a turn on so she had to find other spots to look at as she followed him. Being non-human, he had a wicked sense of smell that led them in the right direction, his sensitive ears listening for the smallest sound. They stood waiting in the clearing for a few moments. It was quiet until Zarek took a few steps forward, his gaze zeroin

Chapter 17
Freja awoke feeling like she was in a raging fire, blazing heat surrounding her from all sides. Upon opening her eyes she was met with amber scales. It took her a few minutes to remember the events of yesterday. She had a panic attack and found her way to a lake where she built a fire and had a revelation about her relationship with Zarek. Instead of holding on to her hatred, she decided to just accept her lot in life as his mate. The only catch was that she was going to fight for her agency if he gave her none. Together they had a heart to heart under the stars. It had been wonderful and she had felt comfortable falling asleep next to him as she did. The blazing heat that had awoken her was his body. His body was hotter than the blazing sun in the Southern lands. She was covered in a slick sheen of sweat. Being careful to not wake him, she stood up stretching her muscle

Chapter 18
Tauric watched as his men trained below in the courtyard, training for the day when Zarek would commence his attack. The day was drawing nearer. He could feel it. His spies had told him that Zarek and his mate, Freja, was amassing men to fight.   Together he and his mate were plotting against him.   He felt outrage at how easily the Dragon Slayer had moved beyond her hatred of dragonkin; it was surprising. Their mating was a combination that would surely end his life. Training his men was imperative. Tauric could feel his days being numbered, each day a countdown.   Still, he felt no regret for betraying Zarek. The King had been weak, too careless in not worrying about his people first. Taking the throne had been the right thing to do. He wouldn't give it up without a fight. Even if it came to a fight to the death, which he knew it would, he would finish what his men

Chapter 19
Freja woke up in a cold sweat, shooting upright in the bed. Her breath came in rapid pants as she worked to calm down. Taking in her surroundings she remembered having been led back to the inn by Zarek. He had been there to assuage her fears and insecurities, whispering sweet nothings as she cried. Cressa offered some words of encouragement before heading to her room for the night. The castlemaid had proved to be a good ear to talk to; the female presence very much needed on Freja’s life. She could still feel the rough texture of Zarek’s hands as he soothed her in only a way that a lover could. No part of her body was left untouched. No part unexplored. He was always the passionate and kind lover. Comparing his size to how he handled himself around her was very different. The man was complex. More than she had ever thought. The guilt still weighed on her hear
