XXI. Nique the Night Soldier
''Macy.''   The little girl's name was enough to surprise the four ladies. All heads turned at the sound of the wooden doors opening at their back and in stepped a girl who had her golden hair in a bun and her fierce grey eyes roamed around the room as if ready to devour anyone--a miniature of Aegis' First Lady, though with a much childish expression.   ''M-macy? Is that...''   Aura's voice trailed off. Macy looked at her from head to toe. Macy waved her hand without a smile at their direction, making everyone look at the red feather mark burned on the back of her right palm.   ''Hello, Aegis.''   Her voice was casual but it sounded like they didn't know ea

XXII. Khenealm Contracts
When they reached the place, her friends attempted to talk her over it one more time. They were convincing her to back off and just wait for Leison's approval. But Nique shook her head. According to Macy, this was the day and time they entered the bar and so they had no better opportunity than now.   She will not fail.   Nique was the silent one in their group. It was not that she didn't want to interact with her friends. She was just content being happy for them. If they were playing games and their laughs would echo in the house, deep inside, she was also brimming with happiness even if she was by the windowsill. If they were swimming, whether at the beach or just at the river and seeing how refreshed they are, she was also glad that she came. That was her personality ever since she was a child which people around her hated. Her ac

XXIII. The Dark Sky
Though Leison and Nique asked everyone to keep the news low, word travelled faster than they could stop it from spreading. Leison got numerous calls congratulating him, some hollering in laughter, but mostly were happy. News of their contract was like a ray of sunshine amidst all the pressure from Hearth's presence. Not only was it a break in the air, but it was an ace card on their side. Now, the enemy couldn't just attack from all sides because wherever Nique and Leison was, they could detect each other. Leison didn't just have the power of the brains, which was already fearsome enough, but he was also known for his long-range telecommunication skills. That power of his and along with Nique's superb teleportation ability, they were the worst combination for the enemy's favourite tactics which was surprise attacks. Having such a powerful duo would no longer surprise them if ever Hearth would attack again. Leison said that it was just a theory but it worked. There were no more movem

XXIV. The Dead vs The Living
Ryder felt something at his back. He turned around, only to see wooden walls. Ryder was just about to let it slide, not until he heard that familiar voice--a voice that had been hunting him for a year ever since the civil war ended. "Ryder." He turned again, still finding nothing. He felt a chill in his bones. After he left the hospital, he found an inn. He knew that the old man wouldn't let him go tomorrow even if he was discharged because the old man was already making plans of calling the Triad to arrange for them to come and get him. That night, de dreamt that old man Nysou was scolding him in his dream. ''I thought you had already learned your lesson,'' he had said. ''Nothing good comes out of chasing the dead. How many days have you already searched? Surely you must have known already by now that I was not the one who sent that yellow report about seeing Fhae. I say that someone is making up the reports.'' ''Are you even sure of your theory that the ghost of that lady want

XXV. Ambush
It was chaos inside. If Raeya hadn't called for the immediate locking of the doors of the building, they would have been dead by now, assuming the outside guards were the only ones affected. No one knew how Hearth did it. They were surrounded. The controlled guards outside were making noise on the building entrances, firing guns, banging at the metal doors, and trying to electrocute and fry the security system. Ayden approached Raeya panting heavily. ''How many?'' she asked. ''Fifty of us are here. Half are able to fight and the others are just teens--young assistants.'' His voice was tight as if there was no hope left. Raeya looked outside and saw the swarm of guards. Raeya banged her fist on one of the poles of the windows. It hurt but she didn't seem to care. Hearth did it again--their very mistake that caused the war a year ago--brainwashing. If worst comes to worst, it would be twenty five versus a hundred. Hearth knew security was tight in the headquarters of the Triad

XXVI. Deathmatch
The very essence of the plan was to help as many people as possible to escape the building. Raeya didn't even have the luxury to plan big things like taking down the enemy with their small number, or burying the building along with their enemies and themselves and just die for Khenealm, or praying for a miracle that help will come. No. Her eyes were focused on one single word--survival. Everything was not hopeless. The secret helicopters were still there inside the building which no one knew except for Ayden and Raeya whom he had told to. Ayden was about to reveal that information but Raeya stopped him, skeptical that maybe somebody among them was also being controlled. For if the enemy could do such a thing to a large number of people, they would be on the right track if they were to think that someone among them is being used as a spy. Hearth has planned this all along. They even managed to take out the signal. The others had been doing nothing but dialing on their phones or try

XXVII. A Flashback
Raeya was about to dress up for the festival until she heard a familiar knock at the window glass. Raeya put down her comb and swiped the red curtains. It was already dark outside but Ryder's grinning face didn't seem to care. She sighed, opened the window latch and let Ryder in. He slid in one smooth jump and landed inside perfectly as he has been doing it a lot of times before. Raeya again closed her window immediately, making sure that no one of the busy folks outside preparing for the festival saw. ''What do you think you're doing? If they saw you there...'' Her troubled voice was silenced by his smile. She then noticed his appearance. ''You're not dressed,” she noted. ''Like you,'' he answered, as if teasing her. Raeya looked at her long dress at the bed. It was colored black with a lot of slits--too fancy for her taste and too fashionable for a seven year old. Though she knew it was an ancient clothing weaved by the talented women at their village, she just didn't feel lik

XXVIII. Opened Eyes
Ryder found the source of the voice that had been hunting him. There was a clearing. The fog was so thick he couldn’t see clearly, not until he recognized the shining form in front of him. Ryder thought that he was in heaven. Finally, after months of pain, anguish, and remorse, he was finally facing one of his regrets, rather, one of whom he regretted not saving. “Hello there, Ryder. How have you been?” Her voice was angelic and her form was wavy, a clear sign that it was just her spirit and not her actual body. “What would it take to bring you back to life?” There he said it. It was what he wished upon the stars ever since the mass funeral. Fhae smiled at that. “No one is blaming you but yourself. Heads up, leader of Aegis.” Ryder clenched his fists. “I–I’m not worthy of that title anymore.” “Why?” “I am broken. I don’t think I can ever be fixed again. I am too wounded to heal and a soldier gravely hurt is not meant for the battlefield.” All of his burden came gushing ou

XXIX. A Partner' Plea
''What do you mean.. time is five times faster?'' The conjurer laughed like a witch. It was slow at first then became louder and longer gradually until she was holding her stomach like it was so funny. ''I guess you won't answer kindly,'' Ryder said, unsheathed his sword at lightning speed, and charged at her. The conjurer's eyes twitched like she was annoyed her moment of laughter was about to be disrupted. She clapped her hands in a prayer and Ryder knew she was about to chant some nasty Hearth spell. He saw it coming except for the size. The woman produced a purple ball charged with lightning and Ryder was already too near her body to back out. So he met her attack. Ryder quickly gathered for power and he glowed in a bluish green color. Ryder faced the ball of energy head on and sliced through the middle. Electricity coursed his body and when their attacks dissipated, Ryder felt his energy go down and he had to stick his sword on the ground and lean on it for support. ''Hmph.

XXX. The Answer From Beyond the Skies
Ryder rushed in full speed with his motor. Every entrance was wrecked, slabs of metal and wood were scattered, and the building had such large holes like comets raining down on that place. It was just like what they did to Hearth which made his heart whimper. This was payback. Much to his despair, the place was full of corpses. He suddenly felt queasy, memories of the war last year flashed before him. He spotted an area where there were signs of broken battling machines used to break walls. This was not a simple ambush. It was an all-out war meant to massacre. When his motor couldn’t pass through any longer because of the debris, he got off, pulled out his sword and swung it at the dirty pile in front of him and went inside a small hallway. He had a feeling that this was where they really fought because the wreckage here was the worst. He let his aura glow, trying to find any source of life. His heart sank when he couldn’t find any. Tears were starting to form. He wouldn’t accep
