CHAPTER 41
Chase woke up nauseous and disorientated. At first, he thought he had gone blind, everything was dim and out of focus. Then he understood his left eye was swollen shut. Holding his throbbing head, he sat up slowly. Blood had dried at the side of his head. He ran his head over the cakey mess.“What the fuck happened?” he asked the silent room. Only when he shivered did he realize he was buck naked. Chase tried to remember, but his head felt like it was stuffed full of cotton wool. Water. He needed something to drink.A bloodied and dirty shirt he recognized as his own lay next to him. He put it on with shaking hands. Where was the rest of his suit, he wondered. What was he even doing here? He was supposed to be at home with Christine. He stood, his legs shaking so much he almost toppled over and then he saw her.A scream wrenched from his parched throat at seeing the naked body of the black-haired woman, her face beaten to a bloody pulp. She lay on the stained carpet, not moving.“Oh,

CHAPTER 42
Alexander slapped his cell phone down on the desk and leaned back in his chair tugging on his tie. He had just ended the call with the DA’s office. This has created a shitstorm like no other. Fortunately, he prevented them from searching Chase’s car and apartment. That could buy them some time. His jaw hurt from clenching his teeth and he was so damn tired. There had been no sleep for him at all. Erica stayed with Christine last night and he called Raven and Ellen to come as soon as possible. The twins stayed home from school to keep them out of publicity, if word got out. He needed to safeguard them from noxious people. It was the least he could do.He needed to talk to Chase before he says or does something stupid in his current state. At least the Captain informed him in which hospital he was being detained. Knowing Christine would like to see him for herself, he thought it best not to take her with him.Family members weren’t actually allowed to visit an accused person in hospital

CHAPTER 43
On the third day, after hearing nothing further from Alexander, Christine decided to go to the office. Her mother phoned this morning wanting to get on the first flight over. She refused, saying it would be best for them not to come. The truth was she didn’t have the strength to deal with her parents right now.Waiting for the Lyft she ordered, she checked herself in the bedroom mirror. Her face looked gaunt and the light make-up she applied hardly concealed the dark rings underneath her eyes. Her nights were spent crying and having horrible dreams. She even considered going back to her therapist, but then she decided against it. There was no time for it. She had to focus on Chase. She needed to find out exactly what the charges against him was and what evidence or motive they had to keep him in the holding cells. She could get absolutely no information out of the police. They refused to let her see him. It had Alexander written all over it, of that, she was positive.A notification o

CHAPTER 44
Chase’s eyes widened with shock. His mouth dry as a bone as he tried to form words to speak. The photos were shocking, to say the least.“Where… Where did these come from?” he managed to speak at last. The look on Christine’s face made him want to scream that this wasn’t him, he would never betray her like this. But the man in the photos were unmistakably him. He could only look at them in disgust.“They were delivered to the office.” She answered without meeting his gaze.Alexander picked up the photos. He would have to enter them into evidence. It didn’t look good for Chase. The prosecutor could argue motive.“I don’t have to tell you how bad this looks, do I?” he narrowed his eyes at his son.“Dad, I… I only know there was someone else there, they injected me with something. It must have been heroin.” He remembered the sudden rush of euphoria he felt as the drug took effect. “Whoever was there must have taken these…” he couldn’t even bring himself to name them. He turned his face a

“Are you sure, Christine?” Alexander Ward asked. This was not good. The Prosecutor would have even more motive if this got out.“Yes, yes, I saw her when she came into the office. I will never forget her face.” Christine touched her hand to her chest, it felt like something heavy lay there, forcing the breath out of her. “Why didn’t he say anything?”“I will ask him about it.” Alexander said, his face grim. That boy had a lot of explaining to do, he thought to himself. Heaven help him.“I – I would like to go home now, Mr. Ward.” Christine pushed the chair back to stand. She needed space, to be alone to think all this through.“Of course, my dear.” Taking out a few Dollars to pay for their lunch, he left it on the table, and they made their way to the car.In the car they stayed silent, each with their own thoughts. Christine watched the buildings go by in a blur without registering, Chase’s face was all she saw and the last words he spoke to her repeated over and over in her mind.Al

CHAPTER 46
“I want to see the warrant.” Alexander told the officer in charge. He looked it over and handed it back reluctantly. Chase had signed the document. He sighed. Why would he do that?Christine stood shivering outside the apartment still in her nightclothes.“Mr. Ward, why would they want to search Chase’s apartment? He has nothing to hide.” Christine’s blue eyes pierced him. He couldn’t answer her.Alexander thought about the packet of drugs he destroyed. He hoped to God they don’t find anything else. He should have searched the whole place like he wanted. What the hell was his son thinking? His fears were soon realized when he heard the officer call him.“You are Mr. Ward’s attorney, am I correct?” he looked smug.“Yes?” Alexander stroked the back of his neck, his muscles ached from tension. The officer showed him the baggies he found. Alexander fought back the curses on his tongue.“We have to take the lady in for questioning. Are you her attorney too, Mr. Ward?” The man asked his fac

Alexander replayed his conversation with Chase to Christine. She sat stony-faced and listened to his words.“I felt you should know.” He said, watching her pensive expression. They were sitting in his office. “His first appearance is scheduled for this afternoon.”She nodded. “I appreciate it, Mr. Ward.” She missed him so much, how could he think she hated him. She stood up to walk out. At the door she turned around and said to Alexander: “Tell him I’ll be praying for him.”On her way to Chase’s office she met Mason in the hallway.“Christine.” Mason approached her, his hand held out to take hers. “I came back as soon as I heard. What an awful thing to have happened.” His face was a mask of concern. “Are you alright, Darlin’?”“No, Mason. I can’t believe he would do something like this.” She said, watching Mason’s face.Mason drew her to him for a hug. “I’m so sorry, Christine. You don’t deserve to be hurt like this.” He said, stroking her back. She got a whiff of his cologne, noting

Mason dropped Christine off at the Wards’ house, promising to come fetch her when she was done packing.Erica and Ellen watched Christine as she hastily packed the few things she brought with her.“Are you going back to Chase’s apartment?” Erica asked, worried. She didn’t like the idea of Christine being all alone in her condition, especially when her parents couldn’t be here now. She has become fond of the girl.Christine felt awful for doing this, but she couldn’t wait any longer. She knew they would probably hate her what she was about to do.“No, I’m going to stay with a friend.” She answered, watching Erica’s frown deepen. “I’m sorry, Erica. You’ve all been so good to me, but I just need some time alone. To get my head on straight.”Ellen, who looked so much like her mother, but had her father’s direct grey eyes, shook her head. “You sound like you want to leave my brother now that he needs you so much.”“Ellen!” Erica warned her daughter. Ellen was just like Chase; she didn’t mi

CHAPTER 49
“Call my attorney, I want to change my plea.” Chase called the warden.‘Oh, really? And what else can I do for you, Mister Ward?” the warden laughed at him, taunting him through the bars.Chase growled and smashed his fist against the door, the skin on his knuckles bursting open, and leaving a blood smear against the steel.“Keep that up and I’ll throw you in the hole, Ward!” the warden threatened, lifting his baton to drag it against the bars of Chase’s cell. He whistled a joyful tune all the way down the corridor.Chase threw himself on his bunk, silently screaming in his mind. How could she do this to him? His whole world had crumbled into nothing. His right hand throbbed but he didn’t feel it. There was nothing left to fight for now. Christine has left him. She gave up on him. Taking his child with her, his future. And where did she run to? To Mason fucking Pritchard! Why? When she knew how he felt about Mason and what he did to him. No. He couldn’t believe it. Mason was a born li

Alexander’s face tightened he was expecting this reaction to the news. There was no way he was going to let Chase do that.“No. No fucking way, Chase. You’re not going to change your plea. You’re upset. Let me speak to Christine first before you make any rash decisions.” His hand closed over Chase’s balled fist. His son pulled away from his touch.“Dad, as your attorney you have to do as I say.” Chase let out a deep breath.Alexander slapped a fist on the table, “And as your father I forbid you!” He got up from the chair, stalked away from Chase and leaned against the wall, trying to calm his breathing and the pain in his chest.“I can’t handle anymore betrayal, Dad.” Chase said, his voice sounded tired and unemotional.Alexander round on him, his grey eyes flashing with anger. “Did I raise a coward? Hmm? Did I raise a weak individual who just goes belly-up without a fight? Damn you! I have not raised you like this.” He raised his hand to slap Chase but caught himself just in time. In
