Chapter 41
Thomas darted a quick look around the hallway before silently slipping into Cara’s office. His aim was to get in and out as quickly as possible. He didn’t have the time or energy to deal with the questions that would be asked of him if he was found. He had no clue what it was he was looking for, he just knew there was no logical explanation for Cara’s heightened security. She had to be up to something and he needed the proof.  He started with the bookshelves, looking for anything out of the ordinary, then moved on to the storage cupboard that seemed to be filled with nothing but stationery and a change of clothes. He sat down at her desk, opening the drawers and rifling through their contents. Pens, sticky notes, a stapler. He leaned back in the chair,

Chapter 42
Lucas froze, his anger and fury diminishing as quickly as it came. It had now morphed into worry and concern. “Where are you?” he demanded, already running out the door. “Room five on the second floor. Thomas has gone crazy. Hurry!” Lucas raced up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He broke through the locked door to find Cara splayed on the bed frightened and crying, her shirt ripped and torn, and Thomas naked, staring at him in disbelief. “Lucas, no! It’s not what it looks like. I can explain,” said Thomas, his hands raised in surrender, pleading with his eyes. Cara sobbed loudly and scurried off the bed onto

Chapter 43
Cara had been buzzing with anticipation all day at the thought of finally being with Dane again. Lina had been trying to talk her out of it, insistent, but Cara had pushed her wolf from her mind and blocked her. She’d tried to give up Dane, but he was just as much a part of her as Lucas was now. She couldn’t be without either of them, except she didn’t need a mate-bond to tell her how important Dane was to her. The Moon Goddess got it wrong.  She’d been searching for a sign that she should stop what she was about to do, but the desire that ran through her veins like an electric current blocked all thoughts other than Dane. As she entered their old home in Cape Point, she seductively let a few drops of the mate-bond potion fall onto her tongue. Chapter 44
Cara lay under the bed covers, ignoring the knocking at her door. She didn’t want to move, she didn’t want to speak, she just wanted to be left alone in her misery.    She had messaged Lucas on her phone and told him she was feeling sick and would be staying in the guest bedroom. She’d said she didn’t want to risk passing anything on to him and he’d agreed, but it was rare for a werewolf to be unwell, so she knew the excuse wouldn’t last long.   “Luna!” called Rani from beyond the door. “I’ve got your dinner.”   “I’m not hungry. Just leave it by the door,” she replied, mustering what energy she could.   “Luna, is there anything I can do?”   “No, thank

Chapter 45
After sleeping with Cara the previous day, Dane had decided to stay at the Cape house, but the high and buzz he’d felt after their intimacy was quickly waning. He’d sent her numerous messages and tried calling, but received no response. Radio silence.  Not for the first time, Cara’s actions and intentions confused him. Their on again, off again relationship had taken another turn, and he was still unsure what it all meant.  Stig’s negativity towards Cara was at an all-time high, and Dane had to admit that even he didn’t understand his own actions. He shouldn’t have been able to forgive her, yet she was still everything he wanted. Dane put his glass in the dishwasher and answered the knock at the front door to greet Gamma Joseph.

Chapter 46
“We’re fucked,” said Lucas, pacing up and down his office. “Yep, pretty much,” agreed Dane. “This isn’t a good sign. Nobody ever gets summoned to the Alpha King for tea and biscuits.” “Plus, it’s going to take like seven hours to get there. What a massive pain in the dick that is.” “Seven hours? Pfft, if you go by car, maybe.” “How else would you get there?” “The open sea, my landlocked friend. Just over two hours in a straight line across the ocean and we’ll be there.” “Do you know any

Chapter 47
“Please, Alpha King!” pleaded Lucas. “First, tell us what this is about, and where it’s coming from?” Alpha King Julius leant forward and clasped his hands together, staring back at Lucas with a hard look and a single raised eyebrow. This was a man who would accept nothing less than the truth. “I had a call from some concerned members of your pack…” The fucking nutters, both Lucas and Dane thought to themselves at the same time. “…about the manner in which you took control of your packs, the merging of both territories, and finally their concerns for their welfare in the kind of pack you’re building.&r

Chapter 48
Lucas’ heart was racing as he and Dane ran through the packhouse doors. He noticed Dane had stopped at the bottom of the stairs and turned to face him. “Uh, I’ll let you deal with things,” said Dane, “but could you mind-link me when you’ve seen her, just so I know she’s ok? I’d appreciate it.” Lucas nodded and took off back up the stairs. It was difficult for Dane to resist the urge to check on Cara, but he knew it was the right thing to do.  Lucas burst through the door to their private lounge room and Rani scurried out, head lowered and avoiding eye contact with him.  Cara stood from the couch, and he took a good look at her. She’d tried to tell

Cara looked up as the door opened and Dane entered. She could see on his face that he was just as taken aback at her appearance as Lucas had been. He sat on the couch across from her, careful to keep his distance under Lucas’ roof. “Lucas said you had something to talk to me about. You look awful, what happened?” he asked. “I told Lucas what I did to your mate,” she replied, avoiding eye contact. “I also told him that you didn't know about it. He demanded I tell you.” “I don’t get it. Why would you even tell him about that?”  “Lina abandoned me.” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Chapter 50
Cara knocked tentatively on Lucas’ open office door. He looked up and tried to hide a grimace, then looked back at his computer. “I’m busy. Whatever it is will have to wait,” he replied, his tone clipped. “I want to take you out for the afternoon.” “I just said I’m busy,” he snapped. “Lucas, please. I’ve already asked Dane and he said he’s happy to take over for the rest of the day,” she pleaded. “I’m not taking no for an answer. You can’t avoid me forever.” He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest. Cara had been trying to make an ef
