Twenty-One

Adam woke her up and told her to get dressed, so Bella is now tugging on a pair of black yoga pants and an old faded t-shirt that she has. It is one of her favorites. Bella was in the kitchen making herself a peppermint tea and Chad a glass of hot chocolate when she heard the commotion. The sound of doors slamming and stomping feet. Bella is worried but trying not to show it. Adam has her tasked with distracting Chad. She figures that it has something to do with the fact that Mr. Potter was expected home hours ago. It is running on supper time and no one has heard from her. “Bella?” When she hears Chad's little voice she looks over at him to find him standing there with tears brimming in his eyes. “Are you okay, honey?”

Adam watches Bella as he says the words. He watches as they register with her, as they sink in. But he does not see surprise in her eyes, as if she had already known what he was. What kills him is seeing the fear in her eyes. He hates that she is scared of him again when he had tried so hard to let him see the softer side of him. Adam had tried to erase the fear that he had first inspired in her. Although, he would rather see fear than repulsion. Adam had always known that Bella would have to be told what he was. Bella is sound asleep, once again lying less than five feet away. Only this time she feels so much further away. Even though she asked him to stay with them, he knows it was not because she wanted him around. It was because Chad had wanted the security of having his alpha beside him should there be another attack. As for Bella, she would not do anything to upset the child. Had Chad asked her to walk through fire for him, Adam had not a doubt in his mind that she would have done it. He might not know everything about her, but he does know that if she loves a person, there is not anything that she would not do for them.

Bella stands there in the bathroom, with her shirt half on her head as she listens to the talk in the bedroom. She did not hear all of the conversation, just bits and pieces of it as she was brushing the tangles out of her hair. She heard Chad saying that he wanted to marry her and Adam saying that he could not. She had also heard the whole exchange when Chad said that he did not want to lose her and Adam had said those words. The words that had sent the butterflies in her belly to dancing a jig. Bella had everything ready for when Mrs. Potter got to come back home four days later. She had asked Adam where the woman had been and he said that Lumi and Cole took her to a healer a couple of towns over. The woman belonged to a different pack, but Adam and their alpha had been friendly enough before. The other man agreed to help them.
