CHAPTER 41

I've always wanted to ask him about the lipstick smudge on his collar, but I should rein in my desire to know everything all at once. I'd be able to use that bit of information against him...and Amber!"The house is dark," I noticed when we returned at Clayland. If not because of the sounds coming from frogs and crickets, the silence would be deafening."Most likely a power outage," he replied.“I’m sure there’s a backup, right? Solar or perhaps a generator set?”"Don't worry, the power will be restored before midnight," he assured me but I suspected he was just lying to make me feel at ease. His assurance, however, did not help when it began to rain even before we arrived at the front porch. It could be late but I wouldn’t mind getting wet under the rain. “Just go inside first,” I told him.“Why?” He inquired.“I’m going to stay here for a bit.”“You will get wet!” He exclaimed in disbelief.“That’s the main purpose,” I told him, and his mouth gaped open in shock. “If you are worried

CHAPTER 42

If there’s one thing I hate about men, it’s their domineering attitude. Stefan was like my father who loved to boss me around as if I had no common sense. I clenched my teeth after I was able to distance myself from him.“Will you please stop bossing me around, Stefan? I am not your woman!” I complained angrily and I heard him snort at my announcement.“What are you talking about, woman? Can’t I boss a maid who resides in my place?”The word ‘maid’ reminded me of my current position, and I immediately bit my bottom lip because of embarrassment. “Certainly, you can,” I replied, and without waiting for him, I walked towards the entrance, and never looked back.We slowly made our way up to the second floor, and then I stopped walking suddenly. He groaned when he almost tripped over. “I am scared of the dark,” I told him.“You have to endure it,” he replied.“Come with me inside,” I tried to use my charm on him just to test if he was gullible to any temptation. I needed to know something

CHAPTER 43

After waking up, I stretched my arms, but as soon as I remembered what I did last night, I wanted to go back to sleep. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life, and if Jacob would allow me, I’d rather go back to Claybourne. I sent him a message before going to bed that I would like to return to Claybourne since he hasn’t arrived yet, however, he told me to stay put. He said he would arrive in a few days.I took a deep breath before getting up and proceeded to the bathroom to take a shower. Then, I went downstairs to cook. Just like in Claybourne, I had to work in Clayland. However, Stefan was already in the kitchen when I got there.“Good morning, Bethany!” He smiled when he said his greetings, and I wished he didn’t show me his perfect set of teeth.“Good morning, Stefan. What are you doing here?”“Cooking,” he replied.“But it’s my job!”“Yes, but you woke up late and I’m already starving,” he answered directly.“I’m sorry for being late. I remembered setting the alarm clock b

CHAPTER 44

We argued over something insignificant and because of it, I temporarily forgot about what happened. However, as soon as realization hit me, I glowered my eyes at him, and snapped, “Are you not going to help me?” He simply stared at me and I wondered why."You're completely naked!" He exclaimed. However, I was unconcerned about my nakedness. Rather, I was concerned that I would be become disable for the rest of my life. I couldn’t become one! I had so many things to accomplish in the future, especially for my daughter!“Stefan?” I called for his name when turned his back from me, but he never listened. He went through the closet and rummaged it. Then he returned with one of my clothes.“Put this on,” he said while handing it to me.“I don’t think I can do it,” I told him the truth and he never was“You can’t? Are you sure about that or you’re just trying to seduce me,” he accused me of something so horrendous!I twitched my nose before giving him a death stare. For a moment, I was just

CHAPTER 45

I inadvertently brushed my hand against the upper part of his abdomen on occasion, and it took that long for me to notice the changes in his body. He groaned, but then he abruptly stepped on the brake."You frightened me!" I complained."We're here," he announced and when I looked around, I was impressed with the structure in front of me. It was made of stone with brown embellishments, and there were tiny and octagonal windows that were asymmetrically added to the structure. Undoubtedly, it would let in plenty of light during the day.“This is not a clinic!” I exclaimed because it was obviously someone’s home. Who knew if he brought me to another woman’s house? It would be convenient for him to visit his mistresses while being with me. It would definitely save him from the rumours of dating married women.“Nope, but the one living in this house can certainly help you, Bethany. So please stop talking, and ring the doorbell!”When I glanced at him, I thought I saw how he clenched his ja

CHAPTER 46

When he struggled to feed me, I suggested he should just use his hand, and he was taken aback. Stefan stared at me as if I have become a monster in front him. I furrowed my brows before smiling at him. "Are you sure?"I nodded in response to his question. Then, I attempted to ignore the sweetness of his action. The warmth coming from his hand while feeling me was seductive, and I believed I couldn’t stand it anymore. His intense gazes were suffocating!"I'm done," I said, turning down the food he was about to shove into my mouth. I couldn't take it anymore. Something had been triggered in me, and I didn't like it."Would you like me to accompany you to your room?"He's probably joking; he's probably not. "Are you flirting with me?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him."Yes," he replied casually, and this time, it was me, who was taken aback! “Oh no, I’m just kidding, dear. You’re pretty, but you're definitely not my type," he said harshly.I had to bite my bottom lip to keep it from qu

CHAPTER 47

When Stefan told me about Jacob’s philandering activities, I tried to be cool about it but I wasn’t that sophisticated. Deep inside, I was hurting and insulted, so I thought that Stefan’s offer to be friends with him wasn’t that bad after all. In the end, I agreed to his suggestions, and we made a deal. The first thing we did as friends were to watch a movie together. He took me to the nearest movie theatre and honestly, I appreciated it so much. I have never been to the cinema with a man. Although my father used to take me to the cinema when I was in middle school, it wasn’t counted as a date. He bought some popcorn and soda, and he even held my hand on our way inside the movie theatre.“Are you sure that Amber wouldn’t mind if she’s going to see us together?? I asked and his yes immediately glowered at me. “Did I say something wrong, Stefan? What’s gotten into you?”“Why are you bringing Amber’s name into this conversation?” He responded with an inquiry, but his eyes seemed to be so

CHAPTER 48

When Stefan insulted me, I was supposed to get mad, but then my phone rang continuously. It was my boss, Jacob, so I didn’t waste more time and took the call. “Hello?”“How are you doing, Bethany? Did my brother treat you well?”“Mmm yes, but can you tell me when are you coming here?”“Tomorrow morning. We will be there,” he said, and then I heard several voices talking behind him. If I wasn’t mistaken, I thought I also heard Dale’s voice. “Dale is with you, right?”“Yes,” Jacob responded.“Will he also come?”“I’m sorry to disappoint you, sweetheart, but Dale will be busy with something else. An old acquaintance is causing trouble in Claybourne, and Dale will deal with him.”“An old acquaintance?”“Yes! My father used to be friends with Roger Middleton but now the old fart has been a headache in Claybourne! I wish I could just kill him instantly!”When he mentioned my father’s name, I became interested in it. “Why are you mad at him?” I asked because I wanted to know the reason for h

CHAPTER 49

I was known for speaking my mind, but I should have been more careful with my words. Stefan was irritated by my remark, and his dark voice made me cower in the shadows. “Let me pass,” I told him when he suddenly blocked the door with his body.“I don’t think this is right, Bethany. Please just go back to your room. My brother will be here in the morning and I don’t want him to overthink us. Please…,” he begged but at the same time, he shoved me away from his room.“I am also begging you,” I stated, but instead of letting me in, he chose to step outside and gestured for me to get in. “Where are you going?” I inquired.“None of your business,” he replied.“Wait, Stefan!" I called his name before he abandoned me completely, and when he stopped walking, I dashed after him. As he came to a halt in his tracks, I bit my lower lip. “I don’t know how to say this without ruining my reputation but I am truly scared of the dark!”“Stop lying!”“I am not lying!”“Come on, Bethany. You only have to

CHAPTER 50

When Jacob failed to come on time, I had no choice but to stick with Stefan. I informed him that he could take me to the nearest bus station so that I could return to Claybourne, but he insisted I should stay. Unless there’s an order coming from his brother to send me back to Claybourne, I should stay put!At first, it would be so boring on the plantation but Stefan showed me around, and he truly became a friend. Because of him, I temporarily forgot about my worries…especially about my newborn daughter. Stefan would take me to places I had never been before, and I appreciated his effort to keep me company. I knew he wasn’t obligated to do so, and that’s one of the reasons why it seemed I was drawn to him. Well, who wouldn’t? While Jacob has forgotten about me, Stefan was ready to comfort me.One day, I heard him having a conversation with his mother, and the woman’s words were painful to listen to. She insulted my poor background, but as much as I wanted to hate her, she was only tell
