Chapter Seventy-One
Rae was tired to the bone and lunch hadn't even been served yet. The good thing was that the potatoes were coming out of the water clean. Clean water played a big role in that. There were no complaints from the female who was cutting the potatoes so that was a relief. They talked about chores mostly and what they still had to do before the day ended. Rae was washing potatoes for lunch and dinner. And at some point, the water became filthy again so she had to change it. The sun outside was hotter than ever. She felt drained and like she didn't want to continue. There were times when she cried silent tears as she rubbed the potatoes between her hands because the unfairness of it all was hard to swallow. She didn't have to work as a slave for WoodFur. She didn't owe them a damned thing and what they were doing was cruel. How was she expected to give her best when she hadn't been fed? It was ridiculous. They were ridiculous. And who the hell was the Beta of the pack? She didn't give to

Chapter Seventy-Two
It took a while before the door opened. When it finally did, Rae was shocked. She was staring at a tall male who appeared to be a few years older than her. He had a scar on his cheek that was gruesome and made him look cruel somehow. But that wasn't what shocked her. The male standing before her looked exactly like Fred. If she hadn't heard him being ripped apart by Keegan that day in the woods, she would have thought that he was standing in front of her, that his ugly scars were from the fight with Keegan. The scar on the back of her neck tingled and she had to ignore the need to scratch it. He gave her a sour look and asked, "You're the thieving female, are you?"She gritted her teeth even though she was horrified. "I'm not a thief."He kept looking at her in the same negative way. Rae gulped. She was watching him for any sign that he might know who she was. If he did, it would mean that he was Fred, and she didn’t want him to be Fred. Not in a pack of strangers and away from Ke

Chapter Seventy-Three
Rae kept looking over her shoulder to ensure that Alfred wasn't standing behind her. She was terrified of seeing him. She didn't want to take him anywhere because, well, there was simply no place to take him. Fred had died back at the camp. She didn't know where the camp was. She had no clue whatsoever. If she did, she would have gone there to wait for Keegan. Speaking of which, she wondered if he already knew about what happened at StonePaw and her escape. She was thinking about him a lot lately. It always pained her to think of him She had been given her schedule and was pleased to find out that her work was mostly limited to the kitchen. She went from washing endless vegetables to washing and dicing them. That part took some getting used to but the quantities were so large that she didn't need extra days to learn. The two that passed were enough. Two days. Two whole days. She thought she wouldn't survive one but proved herself and the others wrong. The conversation in the kitch

Chapter Seventy-Four
Rae woke up more tired than ever. She hasn't slept well. Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw that poor female being punished for making an honest mistake. The cruelty had no limits, it seemed. Tara hadn't lied about that. She had just been lucky enough not to see anything hideous during her first few days. It was her turn to fill the tub with clean water. She stood up while Tara slept and grabbed the half-empty tub. She carried it all the way down the corridor, through the living room, and into the kitchen. She disposed of it outside and filled it with water from the well. There was never anyone around whenever she was filling her tub, so maybe that meant that they did so at night? It would sure facilitate things. She made a mental note to ask Tara about it. The day was somewhat warm, so she knew that it would be an internal one in the kitchen, which was a poorly ventilated area. And with the tension, things would get ten times heavier. And hotter. It wasn't something she was loo

Chapter Seventy-Five
Rae could barely open her mouth. "Keegan?"He smiled at her but said nothing. She blinked several times, and her vision cleared gradually. The room was very dark. The night candle hadn't been lit. She wasn't sure whether he was really there or whether she was dreaming. "Rae," he said softly in the dark.Rae shivered. The room grew cold suddenly, and she felt certain for a minute that she would wake up from her dream and be thrown right into her gruesome reality again. Tara would be sleeping beside her, and it would still be dark. She would lie staring at the ceiling with a heavy heart, hoping to fall right back asleep so she could continue her dreaming but seeing Keegan was too painful, so she'd rather stay awake than immerse herself into a fairytale that would end when the sun rose. Before the sun rose, actually, since she had to start waking up with the other cooks. Regardless of how much she blinked, he didn't disappear before her eyes. He was still sitting on the edge of her bed

Chapter Seventy-Six
Rae awoke in a much lighter place. Keegan and what happened the previous night was all that was on her mind. She wondered vaguely if it had all been a cruel dream, and prepared herself for the shattering heartbreak she would get from the reality check, but when she saw that she was in a tent of some kind and not in her room with Tara sleeping beside her, she knew it wasn't a dream. It had all happened. She was saved. It was a relief. Rae looked around the room, and saw that Keegan was nowhere to be seen. She sat up, and rubbed her eyes. She felt weak, but not lightheaded. It didn't take too long for her to remember what happened the previous night. She passed out before Keegan could explain everything that had happened while they were apart. There was still much that had to be addressed, though. She had a lot of unanswered questions in her mind. She didn’t hurry in getting out of bed because there was nothing left for her to worry about. She wouldn’t have to get to the kitchen to

Chapter Seventy-Seven
Rae was so distracted by her feelings for Keegan that she momentarily forgot where they were. When she finally looked around, she saw that the eyes of the employees were on her. Their eyes were widened in surprise and she saw that the females who worked with her in the kitchen were alive. Bound and gagged, as she had guessed, but alive. "What are you going to do with them?" she asked Keegan, and it was sad for her to notice that her question broke the spell. His features grew more serious, and he turned around to fix them a look. "I don't know," he said. "It all depends on them.""What does that mean?" she asked. It was time for her to ask him everything that was on her mind. She couldn't let a single thing slide. She had to be aware of everything that was happening, and everything that he would do. She was tired of being in the dark."They'll be given a choice," he stated. "Everyone—except the Alpha and his immediate family, of course, will be given a choice. They either accept me

Chapter Seventy-Eight
The two of them had dinner inside their tent, and Rae ate well for the first time in a long time. Everything was delicious; she ate as if her life depended on it, and perhaps it did. For the most part, Keegan watched her, and he did so with a faint smile on his lips. “Good?” he asked. She nodded. “For you, only the best,” he said, and she blushed. “The cooks here are spectacular. They had months of food kept all over the place. A cruel folk, they were. Starving all of you for their benefit. The injustice makes my blood boil.”“It’s over now,” Rae said to him after she swallowed her mouthful of wine. “You’re here to make everything right. You’ve saved them all.”Keegan smiled, then leaned in for a kiss. Rae felt delighted. She had forgotten the argument they had about StonePaw, and chose to live in the moment. There was no use in stressing about something that hadn’t happened yet. She was only shortening the beautiful moments, and tainting them with her worries and despair. She had

Rae slept for the better part of the day. She woke up feeling exhausted yet refreshed. Her muscles hurt, but it was a good like of pain, especially because she knew why they hurt so much. There was a smile plastered onto her face, and she couldn't stop smiling no matter how silly she felt. Last night was a marvelous experience, and she was thankful that he gave her a taste of what their mated life would look like. She was ready for the big commitment. It wasn't just that he made her feel good, it also had to do with the way she felt about Keegan excluding everything that they had done. To know that they could make love like that was a bonus. She hadn't expected that when she first fell in love with him. She wanted to make love with him every single day. She was excited for it to happen. And it was funny how she never craved sex before, but now that she had an idea of what it was, she wanted to do it again. Right before breakfast. It was insane, and she could hardly recognize hersel

The day of their mating finally arrived. Rae was dressed in the fine dress that Tara had remedied. It had belonged to the Luna of WoodFur, and now it was hers. The design was a little different than the usual ones—the bodice was tight-fitting, and there was a slit on the side of the skirt so she could move freely. The sleeves had been ditched because the days were getting increasingly hot, and overall, Rae was absolutely in love with it. "Thank you," she said to Tara. "I can't take you enough for making this beautiful design for me. I look...I don't think I've ever looked this beautiful.""The pleasure is all mine," she replied with a smile. "You've saved us all from a miserable end. For that, I will always be thankful. You and Alpha Keegan saved our lives."Rae blushed. "It was our pleasure."Tara took her hand in hers and they stared at each other’s faces for a full minute. Rae felt truly grateful for her help. She was the one who she and Keegan put in charge of the house’s affair
