Chapter Thirty-One
Rae dreamt of Kara again. She hated that, because then she’d think about her sister for the whole day. She avoided thinking about any of her relatives for her own well-being. She didn’t want another depressive episode. She was acclimatizing to her new reality and didn’t need any unnecessary hindrance. Thinking of home was never good for her. She tore the piece of meat she was eating in two easily with her fingers. Juice dripped down the side of her hand. She placed it in her mouth and chewed. Although there was nothing particularly wrong with the meat, she was tired of eating it day after day. She knew how ungrateful she sounded but she wished there was more variety. At home, she loved eating macaroni and cheese and jacket potatoes. Salads weren’t everyone else’s favorites but they were hers. Keegan watched her closely. “What are you thinking about?”Rae both hated and loved how he could read her so easily. She hated it because there wasn’t much that she could hide from him. She lo

Chapter Thirty-Two
“Rae,” someone was whispering her name. “Rae.”She cracked an eye open. It was dark and the door to the caravan was open. Panic kicked in but she calmed down instantly when she saw Keegan standing beside her. Her heart was racing. She sat up slowly. She felt immensely tired. “What’s the matter? Where were you?”“Gone,” he answered. “I’m back now. Were you worried?”Rae nodded. Her head hurt from doing so and she didn’t know why. He kept looking at her face and refused to look away. She was glad that he was back. She asked him, “Why did you wake me?”“I wanted to have a good look at your face,” he answered. “Is that too much to ask?”“Keegan, you know we can’t,” was her answer. He inches closer to her face. He was looking at her lips. “Why can’t we exactly?”She started shaking her head but he brushed his lips against hers. He did it softly, lovingly. She closed her eyes. She didn’t tell him to stop but her logical mind was telling her to. Her heart rate accelerated and she was breath

Chapter Thirty-Three
Rae was squatted on the ground for a long time. Unfortunately, she couldn't hear what was being said. She only heard that they were talking and laughing together and seemed to be having a good time. She was angrier than she had ever been. Her heart was hammering against her chest. She never imagined such a situation and therefore she didn't know what to think or feel beside anger. This was what he did when he disappeared? She thought there weren’t female rogues. That was what he told her. She spent hours worried about him and he was having a good time with some female in the woods? Why didn’t he tell her? Oh, she was furious. And the harder they laughed, the worse she felt. He was out having fun while she was stuck inside the caravan worrying about him. He didn’t even have the decency to be honest with her. Why did he insist on wanting to mate with her when he could ask the female he was talking to?Was it all a way to get back at Negan? Everything he told her was a lie. Keegan wasn

Chapter Thirty-Four
Rae stepped back quickly, breaking the kiss. He was breathing harshly and so was she. She became suddenly hyper aware of her nakedness and covered her breast with the palms of her hands. She was embarrassed. He stepped back quickly, looking down at their toes. She didn’t know what had come over her. There was chaos in her head before he kissed her and now there was dead silence. She became ashamed of herself. Of her unfounded anger and reckless behavior. She had risked her life out there because he chose to entertain a female. It made no sense to her now that she thought about it. She didn’t know what had come over her. “I’m sorry,” he said, breaking the awkward and tense silence. “I don’t know what came over me. I shouldn’t have.”“Yes,” she agreed halfheartedly. “You shouldn’t.”Keegan looked uncomfortable. He averted his gaze and didn’t look at her again for the rest of the night. She put on clothes and sit on her bed. He sat at the table in the kitchenette and said nothing to h

Chapter Thirty-Five
Rae waited for Keegan to return and eventually, he did. She was anxious. She waited for him to say something to her as soon as he entered the caravan but he looked at her in a manner that suggested that he didn't know what to say either. She felt discouraged by his silence but her answer didn't change when she asked herself what she would do. It was the second fastest decision that she had ever made in all her life and like the first one, which was leaving her pack and everything she knew behind, she didn't give it too much thought. Keegan leaned against the table and folded his arms. She sat anxiously in bed, hoping that he would say something to break the tense silence. He looked at her uncertainly and then looked away. She held her breath and waited for the moment that he would mention the kiss and what they had done. When he opened his mouth to speak, though, it was the opposite of what she expected. "Lunch will be served a little later. The hunting took longer than expected."

Chapter Thirty-Six
Rae stepped on a twig and Keegan turned around. She would admit that a part of her didn't want to do as he asked. She was hurt by his callousness earlier. He looked hopeful and even relieved and she no longer knew what to expect where he was concerned. He had pushed her away earlier so what was the point in what he was doing? "I'm here," she said for no reason in particular. "Thank you for coming," he said to her. "What's this about?" "There's something that I want to show you. It's a long distance from here. Are you prepared to walk?" "Of course," she told him. "Why wouldn't I?" Keegan chuckled but said nothing. She was dying of curiosity but if he wouldn't tell her where they were going, she wouldn't ask. "Follow me," he said. There weren't many words that she could use to describe the path they followed. It looked like the rest of the forest. Trees on either side of them, grass everywhere, wild roses and flowers growing on bushes, little animals scurrying past them occasiona

Chapter Thirty-Seven
Days had passed, and Rae and Keegan hadn't spoken about them. Rae was starting to think that the whole thing would soon be forgotten. She hoped it would be true but at the same time, didn’t. It was a complicated feeling that she felt was better off not described. He didn’t say anything and that was a relief but a part of her resented him for his silence. How could he not say a thing? How could he remain so inflexible? She was currently reading a new book. Keegan had gotten his hands on another suitcase and it was even fuller than the last two. Gratitude swelled in her chest for him. She had much she wanted to say to him but didn’t know where to begin. It was incredible how her feelings for him changed the whole dynamic of their relationship. There was no more harmless banter. The conversations they had over their meals stopped, too. She didn’t know what to say without reminding both of them of what had transpired between them so she said nothing. She didn’t know what his excuse was b

Chapter Thirty-Eight
“Keegan,” Rae said after a long while. Her shoulders burned from contact with the sun and she felt dehydrated from sweating so much. He lifted his head. He was still in his wolf form so he wouldn’t be able to answer her, unless it was with head gestures. She licked her dry lips and asked, “Do you think you’re ready to go back inside? I don’t want to leave you out here by yourself.”She was trying not to look at his chest because there was still a lot of crusted blood there. His fur was dark red and he was lethargic. He nodded his head, though, so she stood up and after a minute of waiting for legs to stop tingling, she marched toward the caravan. Keegan was trailing behind her. She opened the door and he walked inside. He shifted instantly. His back was toward her so she couldn’t see the wound on his chest. He lay on the bed and that was when she saw the mess. The hole was still there but there weee scabs all around it. He closed his eyes and looked like he was falling back asleep.

Chapter Thirty-Nine
Rae spent the whole morning thinking about how she would tell him how she felt. She woke up with certainty. She had never felt such certainty before in her life. It had to do with seeing him almost dying in her arms. At that moment, she realized that if he died, she would be bereft. She would never forgive herself for not giving them a chance. She knew then that she would rather be with him then not. It was a strange thought because she didn’t stop finding a lot of aspects about him irritating. Tolerable was what they became. Because despite everything, he never stopped caring for her. There was nothing that she did that ever made him change his mind about helping her. Her own family had given up on her at some point so his actions were admirable. He did the impossible for her time and time again. He did what nobody else would do, not even herself. Rae didn’t want to lose him and the thought of wandering the wild on her own didn’t fill her with excitement as it had so many weeks ago

Chapter Forty
“Tell me about you and Negan,” Rae said to him after a long moment of silence. “Tell me about your childhood.”Keegan was silent. She thought he wouldn’t answer her question. Reminding him of Negan was perhaps not the most sensible move. But ever since he talked about him earlier, she couldn’t shake the curiosity off. He surprised her by asking, “What do you wanna know?”“The best parts,” she stated. “The parts when the two of you were brothers and not rivals. The parts of your story that you think about fondly, without hate and without thinking about the present.”“That isn’t easy,” he confessed. “Everything has been tainted by his betrayal. But I’ll try to think of something. Let me see…”Rae waited patiently for him to start telling the story. He was drawing circles on her open palm with his thumb and she loved their proximity. She couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. The night was hot but his warmth didn’t suffocate her. She would choose to be beside him even in a volcano. A smi
