FIONA SAT ON THE bed and stared at the wall. She hadn't slept much despite how comfortable the bed was, and how good the sheets felt after a gloriously hot shower. Nothing could touch her heart. It'd been a whole day now since she'd last seen Marco and yet...it felt as though he was there with her. Just outside her line of sight. She wanted him to be there...and she hated him and she...she didn't know what she felt for him. It was too jumbled. She'd been numb with fear before. This was...a different kind of numbness. She ached deep inside of her. As many times as she'd experienced heartbreak before, this was possibly worse. Worse than even Heath. With him...she'd been pissed. Angry. She'd wanted revenge. This thing with Marco ran deeper though.Marco knew her truth. All of it. And she'd let him use her.She should have known when things started going bad, when he had a friend nearby that could solve all her problems while she took a vacation, that it wasn't right.Who did tha

FIONA STOOD IN THE kitchen, too scared to cross the living room back to her cave of a room.Scott was seriously pissed. All she'd been able to figure out was that they were somehow locked out of not only her computer, but all of the machines connected to the network they had remote access to.The phone calls had started rolling in a few minutes after Scott threw a tablet against the wall. The shards of glass and bits of the external casing had been worked into the carpet by the other two guys going back and forth. Apparently, they weren't the only ones who could no longer access their machines. If what she suspected was true, this block extended not only to their location, but whatever server system they were attached to. Thursday morning, everyone in the company would be just getting in, trying to get their email. It was a disaster.Fiona didn't know a lot about the way the federal government ran their IT departments, but she knew the kind of permissions it took to just get ac

FIONA SAT HUDDLED IN the middle seat of the SUV. They'd packed the whole team, except one, into the truck when the time came to meet up with Marco. She still hadn't figured out who or what Scott was, but she knew he wasn't a federal officer. He'd lied to her, and these other men were in on it. He hadn't said it, and she hadn't acknowledged it, but she was pretty sure they were all aware the ruse was up.Fiona was a prisoner. And she'd walked into this trap of her own, free will. She gripped the arm rests with both hands. If only this was a rescue, and not an information swap. She was goods. A commodity. And both Marco and Scott wanted her because inside her head was the organizational structure for the NueEnergy files. Who would have thought one simple administrative task from her first year working for the company would lay the groundwork for-this?She was a cipher.A tool. That was what she was to them.Scott needed her to...she didn't know. He clearly wasn't trying t

SCOTT'S HANDS SHOOK. HIS stomach churned. Sweat soaked the back of his shirt. The suburban houses passed in a blur. The soldier boy knew. How the fuck did he know?Scott had covered his tracks. Nothing should be able to connect him with his handle. He'd been careful. So how had the idiot figured it out and not Brat?It was over. This whole ruse was done for. When they got back to the condo, he'd go out for something...and never come back. He'd found Brat once, he could find her again.A phone rang and Scott started.Goon #1 answered his cell, one hand on the wheel. His side of the conversation was monosyllabic.Scott could wait until the goons were off shining their guns or something. He'd go out through the garage and hoof it to the bus stop. He had a few things stashed across town. It wouldn't take long to get there. He'd burn this identity and figure it out from there. Yeah, he didn't have cash, but with Brat out of his hands, and no doubt headed straight to the FBI

FIONA WALKED INTO ANOTHER hole-in-the-wall motel with dingy walls, the scent of pot in the air and beds that looked slept in."It's a shithole. I'm sorry." Marco closed the door behind her."It's four walls and a roof. It's great." Fiona tugged the comforter up over a pillow and sat down. It wasn't all that long ago, walls were considered optional so long as she had a roof. There'd been tough years growing up."Fiona...""What?" She was exhausted, and he kept doing this. Saying her name then staring at her, as if she could understand what he wasn't saying. But she didn't know him. Never really had."Nothing."She rolled her eyes and slid down to lay on her back.Marco circled the other bed and sat facing her."I just..."I just-what?I just screwed up?I just didn't think?I just fell crazy in love with you?I just can't help being a stupid, idiotic man?"What?" She sat up and swung her legs off the bed, facing him. "You just-what, Marco? What?""I didn't
