LILA CHECKED HER PHONE.Again.Only this time she had a message. Her heart throbbed in her throat. The six lines of text were going to cost her around a hundred grand a line, but when the stakes were this high that wasn't a price tag to scoff at. She was paying dearly for inside information, and it was just lucky someone behind the scenes was answering. She didn't know who was manning that sinking ship, all she knew was that shit was headed south with Josh, Scott, and her team in Denver, and she needed to know more about this Fiona woman. Who better to inform on her than the other people searching for her?"Gotcha," Lila whispered.***MARCO NEEDED TO TOUCH her. Hold her. And Fiona wasn't having any of it.She wouldn't even look at him, and it was tearing him up inside. He'd told her he loved her.And she wanted him to leave her alone. The woman who fell too fast wanted him to let her go.He couldn't do that, and yet...what right did he have to ask her for

FIONA'S HEAD HURT. HELL, everything hurt. What'd happened?Even thinking made her ache in a bad way.The last she remembered...Marco had been about to make the trade for Danny...and then...It was too jumbled in her head.Something had happened. What? She tried to lift her hand, but it was heavy. It was cold. Why was she cold?Fiona opened her eyes and shut them again. Pain radiated down her neck and spine. "Migraine" was too tame a word for the skull-splitting agony. Her shoulders throbbed in an unnatural way. What the hell was going on?She shifted, and gravity went topsy-turvy on her. Up became left and down became right. She peered through her lashes.Huh.She wasn't lying down after all. Then where was she?Something had happened. She'd...been scared. Things had spun out of control and...what? What'd happened? Whatever it was, it was bad.Fiona tried once more to lift her hand.It wasn't heavy. She was tied up.She twisted her arms. Coarse rope bi

SCOTT LEANED IN CLOSE. Brat's face was purple and her eyes bulged nearly out of her head. He'd imagined this moment dozens-hundreds-of times. It was so much better now that it was a reality.A few more seconds and she'd be done. Dead. Finally! Her movements lost some of the frantic flailing. Even in death, she was still a brat.Another moment...Her knee jerked up, ramming his balls toward his tailbone. He grunted and his hands slid to her shoulders. For a moment, he struggled to draw in air.Fuuuuck, that hurt. The bitch.Brat sucked in deep breaths, her body shuddering. Tears wetted her cheeks, and she sobbed. He was so close he could feel the caress of her breath on his cheek.Yeah, he was going to hurl. He'd almost finished the damn job.Scott pushed off her and hobbled a few steps, one hand on his groin."Help!" Brat's damaged throat made her cries too soft and broken to be heard beyond these walls. He turned, watching her wobble the chair a bit. The colo

FIONA REACHED FOR THE pillow behind her, but it was awkward only having one mobile hand."Here, let me." Marco was there, ready to help. She should be grateful. Thankful. Something other than irritated. She was alive because of him. But right now she just wanted to throw something."Thanks." She eased back into her throne of cushions.Ian said she'd only been out for a day, but it felt longer. The hotel room had that lived-in-too-long look to it, but that could be in part to the surplus of medical supplies on every available surface.Had she known Marco was also an EMT?She did now.Her arm was stitched up nicely, and he'd been the most attentive nurse she'd ever had.Didn't change the fact she wanted to bash him over the head. The commercials flipped off and the live broadcast started again. The wide shot was of the NueEnergy building she'd worked in for years. Uniformed officers and lots of people in FBI jackets went in and out.Randy must have plugged the drives

MARCO PRIED THE CAP off the beer bottle and slid into a chair at Travis' dining table. Mason, Ian, Luke and Felix were already seated and ready for the poker game. They had a couple of hours before Bliss came home from Hannah's and kicked them all out."Anyone heard from Zain?" Travis asked."Oh, he flew to Seattle early to get out before the snow settled in." Mason tipped his beer back and took a long pull."Lucky bastard," Travis muttered. He stood in front of the fridge, staring at the floor."Something wrong, man?" Marco asked. He didn't really care, but he should. It was all part of making an effort. Life had to go on. Sitting back, letting it pass him by because he'd let the most amazing woman go wasn't an excuse to stop living."Yeah, I guess I should just...say it." Travis lifted his head, staring at them. The whole table fell into silence.Travis was one of the first guys to sign on with Aegis. He was a damn hard worker and a great guy to have in the field. But s
