Mia's POV:It took me a few moments to understand what he was on about. I laughed. “Hop in.” I opened the back door for him.“You even have a driver.” He noted, getting in. I slid in after him. “Who exactly are you?”“Like I said,” I grinned, “I work for the Triplets.”“If you tell me that you work for some secret government organization, I'll believe it. I swear.” Zayn said. He was out of character.Maybe it was school or the adrenaline of the fight but, I liked chatty Zayn. Chatty Zayn is fun.I chuckled. “I wish,” I replied. We were closer to his house now and it was time for me to strike a deal. “If you manage to go to school for one week straight, you've got the job,” I said. Terry pulled over just before his house.“That wasn't the deal,” he said. “I'll be going back to work, first thing tomorrow morning.”“I'll pay you for the hours you spend in school.” I fished out a few notes and counted them before handing them over to Zayn.He cocked his brows and counted the notes. Then h

Mia's POV:“For now,” he added. “I think Jaxon is ready now.” He tossed me a bottle of electrolyte water and I drank from it like my life depended on it. It probably did.I let out a breath. “Do I have to continue? I don't think there's any bone or muscle in my body that hasn't been used today.”“If you think you've reached your limit, you still have much more to give,” Jackson said. He didn't herd me off immediately. He let me sit and cool down for a couple of minutes. Then, he grabbed my bag. “Before Jaxon questions why you aren't with him now, let's go.”I stood to my feet and followed Jackson. We didn't walk far. It was almost quite the next room. It was built like a dojo. There were sparring mats around the space and wooden weapons lined up by the wall. There were real weapons there as well.Jaxon walked towards us. He was dressed similarly to Jackson except he had his hand in black fingerless gloves. “I'll take it from here. Thanks, Jackson.”Jackson gave him a nod and then wink

Mia's POV:I needed Zayn to keep an eye on Ramirez for me. He was the third kid I was working on. He had agreed to go back to school and meet with me for two hours every week. I needed to make sure he was on his best behavior. While we were still talking about the details of our work, my phone began to ring. It was Genevieve of course.“Hey, what’s up?” I asked, standing and walking away from Zayn.“I need your help.” She said. I stopped moving. There was something in her voice that told me she needed my help.“Where are you?”Zayn took a taxi home while Terry drove me to Genevieve's apartment. She was standing by the door when I walked in, wrapped in her bathing robe.“Genevieve, what's wrong?” I asked. She looked fine, didn't she? Wait.Genevieve undid the bathrobe and it fell to the ground. She was wearing a matching set of underwear but that wasn't what caught my eyes. I noticed the red dots clustered around her neck, her arms, and her leg.“What the hell?” I asked, alarmed. “How'

Mia's POV:Jackson stopped moving and he looked at me. “You like this side of me? What do you mean?” He asked.“You're not cold or detached. You don't have this hard exterior you usually exhibit. You're usually giving short responses or single sentences but right now, hearing you talk for so long, it's just different.” I said. “Good different.”“Oh,” Jackson said, “I guess I'll have to be more of myself with you some more.” He opened the car door for me.I smiled, “I would like that.” I turned to face him. “Goodnight, Jackson.” I walked into his arms and hugged him.“Goodnight, Mia.”Terry drove me back home. Melanie was already asleep but she left my dinner in the oven with a sticky note so I would notice. The next morning, when it was barely 5am, the doorbell rang rapidly. I tumbled out of bed, rolling and walking sleep drunk to get to the door.On the other side was Genevieve, I unlocked it. “What the hell—” I was shoved aside. Several people followed after her, their hands occupie

Mia's POV:“So, as the older brother, you're doing everything to take care of your family? What about your mother?” I asked. I didn't know much about her except that she was a teacher.“My mother…” Zayn sighed. “My mother isn't capable of working to earn money. She's… different. It's just me doing most of the work while my father steals money to buy more booze.”“I'm sorry that you have to go through all this,” I said. I placed my hand on his shoulder. “Hopefully, with me now in your life, we'll try to fix everything that we can.”“I don't need fixing,” Zayn said, getting defensive.I lifted my hands in surrender. “I never said that. And it's not what I mean. I'm just here to help you when you need me.”That was the end of the conversation. I filed it directly into questions or phrases that get Zayn to close up towards me.Chloe stopped by a grocery store and we waited for a few minutes before I grabbed the door handle. Zayn grabbed my hand. “What are you doing?” He asked.“I'm going
