CARTER“But why haven’t they called me?” Spencer asks for what has to be the seventh time since my arrival. “They should have called, right?”It’s obvious he’s been trying to present a calm front to everyone in the room and that front is beginning to wear off. Saying that I’d been surprised when I’d walked in and seen everyone sitting calmly, wearing long faces instead of running around screaming their heads off has to be the understatement of the fucking century. The man loves his daughter more than he loves himself. It’s not in question at all and if I need a proof of that fact, I’ll remember the night he threw himself in front of a gun for her.The explanation to them being here, which they’ve filled me on, is simple. CARTER Avery blinks, peeking through the window. “Who now?” “Adam,” I answer absentmindedly. “He’s a friend of mine.” I’m still wondering what the hell he’s doing here and how on earth he found his way here. Earlier, I’d merely told him where I was going but I didn’t give him the address. Why would I have thought there would be a need for him to have it? That only brings me back to the question; what is Adam doing here? “I didn’t know you had friends,” Avery says, a frown in her voice. I don’t grace that with a response. “What is your friend doing here?” Spencer demands, more than perplexed. “And how the hell did he get in when the gates are security coded? CARTER "This could go so horribly wrong,” Avery whispers. “But it could also go so magnificently right,” Adam drawls, lips slightly tipped up in amusement. To everyone else in the room, it would seem like he’s enjoying this situation a little too much--and maybe he is. Thing is, I know Adam and it’s the adrenaline that comes with a new mission firing through him. Legs bouncing, eyes alight with excitement, he’s more than ready for the thrill. He’s an action junkie and I’ve never seen him more alive than when he’s on a mission. “Don’t you think we need to review the plan again?” She suggests, munching on her lower lip. “Just so we all get it and, you know, don’t make mistakes.” It’s plain as day that she’s nervous. RORY I’ve lost track of time. I don’t know how long I’ve been in here. Hours? Days? Months? It can’t have been more than five or six hours but it certainly feels like months. I have no way of telling the time. I can only make a guess by how dark outside it is that it has to very late and there’s not much I can do with that really. The only thing it tells me is that I have been here awhile and no one has come for me. A heavy dread settles in my stomach and I begin to consider the possibility that I just might die here. RORY Elaine’s face is completely drained of color. I glance between them, wondering if I heard him correctly. Did this psycho just refer to my father’s wife as mom? ‘Mom’ as in the woman who gave birth to him? What in the actual fuck? Looking more closely at the both of them, I actually see a sort of resemblance and that’s when it finally clicks. I remember thinking that there was something familiar about him when I first saw his picture. Why it felt like I’d seen him before. Why his eyes had seemed so familiar… They’re Elaine’s eyes. They have the same eyes! That’s what I’d been trying to figure out then but had failed to make the connection. Of course, I hadn’t been able to. Who on earth could have convinced me that the man after my life was my own step mother’s son? A son we hadn’t heard of until today, mind you.

RORY “Well, I got out.” He nods like he’s proud of himself. “But before I did, I met the best thing that’s ever happened to me. For the first time in my life, I found a woman who understood me. Wanna hear my most shocking discovery?” It’s obviously a rhetorical question, so no one says anything. “I found out that she’d been wronged by not just anyone but your shiny new husband.” He jerks his chin at dad. “That’s when I knew it was fate that brought us together.” My heart races in my chest. As far as I know, dad has a clean slate. I’m usually the problematic one. Who had dad gone and wronged now? Frown lines appear between dad’s brows as he appraises Harley Quinn. I see the same question that runs through my mind run through his. Who is she and how has he done her dirty? “Wanna introduce yourself to them, sugar?” Blake asks her. CARTER I climb carefully up the stairs of the dilapidated building, careful so my feet don’t make a sound. From what I’ve gathered so far, there’s no one else here. I mean there are still several floors for me to check but I doubt I’ll find anyone there either. If there are more people here then at least one should have been stationed at the entrance to stop anyone from trying to get in. And if there’s someone else on the top floor, then he should have taken me out the second I entered the street because as discreet as I’d tried to be, I’m still one big motherfucker and with the kind of view the building has, it shouldn’t have been difficult to spot me. RORY Carter rescued me. He came. When he’d first burst into the room and ruthlessly fought Blake like my own personal knight in shining armor, I’d first thought he was a figment of my own imagination and I’d just needed to feel him for myself. To confirm he’s actually real. I’d launched at him the second he loosened my binds and hadn’t wanted to let him go but then the cops came and I had to leave him to give my statement. They’d wanted me to come to the station with them for a full, detailed statement but dad had refused, telling them that I needed medical attention. RORY I don’t realize I’ve dozed off during the car ride until I’m lifted into a pair of arms. My first instinct is to scream and fight but then just as I tense to do that, I catch a whiff of Carter’s amber, woody scent and I relax, settling against him. It’s a chore to force my eyes open, the lids weighed down by sleep. But when I eventually succeed in opening them, the sight of Carter’s gorgeous face etched in seriousness feels like a reward for winning the fight against sleep.
