Chapter Twenty-EightAlex fondled the door knob once more and it was still locked.Leah’s heart banged rapidly, the muffled thud inside the room reverberated loudly in her head.. Mira. The maid had overheard everything and someone had silenced her. As much as she was frightened, she felt a bit relieved too.Alex’s voice was razor-sharp and low. “Step back.”With a kick, Alex burst through the door, breaking it open. The scene made Leah freeze.Mira was slumped against the bed, her white apron stained with what looked like spilled tea and a streak of blood at her temple. A silver tray lay beside her, bent at the edge. She was unconscious—but alive. Her chest was still rising and falling, though weakly.Standing over her, wide-eyed and frozen like a deer in headlight was Racheal.Leah gasped. “No way.”Alex lunged after her.“Wait—!” Leah jumped in, blocking him. “That’s Rachel, she's with me.”Alexp paused. “Wait, you two know each other?”“Yes, she’s with me. We can trust her.”“Okay

Chapter 33.Leah was too stunned to speak. The air in the infirmary had grown still and eerie. Mira’s words echoed in her ears “the walls don't forget.” and it caused a chill to run down her spine.Alex stepped forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied Mira. “What do you mean by that?”Mira offered a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. “Nothing, just a good old saying.”Leah opened her mouth to respond but Alex gently tugged her arm. “Come, let’s talk outside.”She hesitated and took a quick glance at Mora who was still poised, still smiling, still calm as if nothing unusual didn't just happen.Once they got to the hallway. Leah rounded on him. “Did you hear that? Did you hear her? She's toying with us.”“I know.” Alex muttered. “It’s like she had her brain rewired or something.”“You think she's been brainwashed?”“Well obviously, because that is not the same girl who looked me in the eye two nights ago and told me she feared for her life.”Leah nodded her head in agre

The mansion was unusually quiet. Leah walked down the corridor alone, lightly touching the wallpaper as if looking for something to hold on to. After what Alex said, “We have to create some space”. She didn’t reply. She couldn’t. Not because she agreed, but because his words felt like a slap in the face since it was coming from someone she foolishly started imagining a future with. He hadn’t even looked her in the eye when he said it. Leah opened the library door and walked in. The room smelled like old books and leather, reminding her of Alex who was polished and reserved. She settled into a corner armchair and tried to bask into the silence? “What did I expect?” She soliloquised as she traced the rim of a teacup someone had left behind. Her thoughts kept replaying the moment Victoria entered the room earlier with her sharp, cold eyes and her venomous tone. “I’be been seeing less and less of you.” she had said, standing just close enough to make Leah uncomfortable. Leah ha

Faint voices echoed through her ears, pulling her out of her deep slumber. Leah flickered her eyes open and was instantly hit by a bright white light. The ceiling was white, high, and unfamiliar. She blinked hard, trying to find something to hold on to. Her mouth felt dry, like sand. Her limbs felt heavy and distant, as if they didn't belong to her. “Leah?” She heard Rachel call out, her voice urgent, and panicky. Leah turned her head slowly and found Rachel sitting beside her on the edge of a chair, her face had turned pale and her eyes were pretty weary. “What… happened?” She managed to say. “You fainted,” Rachel said softly. “I found you unconscious. You scared the hell out of me.” “Where am I?” “The infirmary. I called Alex as soon as he could, and he called the doctor” Leah rubbed her eyes open. “He what?” Rachel nodded. “Yes, he carried you himself. He looked… like he’d seen a ghost.” Leah’s chest tightened. “Is it… the baby?” Rachel hesitated. “The
