Jean's POVNia had insisted on following me home after classes, her small hand tugging lightly at my sleeve. Jax had given permission, though I could see the suspicious concern in his eyes. “Stay close to her,” he had said, his voice clipped. I nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility settle over me, but also a quiet thrill at the thought of having her with me again. Nia’s energy was different from the boys, brighter, inquisitive, unfiltered. She kept up a constant chatter during our twenty-minute walk, asking questions about the most random things, clouds, trees, about why some birds sang differently than others.“You really like walking, don’t you, Nia?” I asked, laughing as she darted ahead, then ran back to me with a grin.“I like being with you, Miss Jean,” she said simply. There was honesty in her words, unguarded and immediate, that made me smile more softly than I realized.Once we got home, I guided her inside. The familiar comfort of my house wrapped around me, and I

Lexi’s POVThe last of the rogue factions had finally agreed to the terms, I was told there were only two disagreeing factions, turns out it was way more. I watched another group separate, each moving toward their claimed land with hesitant but genuine acknowledgment of the compromise. The tension in the air had eased, though it hadn’t left me entirely. Even as I went back to my quarters to pack my belongings, I felt an unease gnawing at the edge of my thoughts. Something about the way the factions had moved, the flickers of doubt and fear in their eyes, didn’t sit right with me. I had dealt with rogues, warlords, and thieves enough times to know when things were truly settled, and this didn’t feel like one of those times.“Lady Lexi,” a soft voice interrupted my focus. I looked up, and a small figure hovered at the doorway. It was one of the younger rogues, a girl of maybe eleven or twelve, with wide, solemn eyes that seemed to carry more weight than her years should allow, tha

Jean's POVI couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Every time I stepped into the packhouse now, I felt a tight, unnameable weight pressing down on me. It wasn’t Manny’s illness, not exactly, though I admitted to myself that seeing him so weak unsettled me. It wasn’t even purely Lexi. I had known she would return eventually, had expected it, had even anticipated the chaos she could bring with her effortless charm and her certainty. And yet, the sight of her in the same room as him, touching him, leaning into him, smiling at him, something inside me shivered, a cold, gnawing thing that I could not explain.I arrived that morning earlier than usual, the packhouse quiet in the kind of pre-dawn hush that felt like it could swallow a person whole if they weren’t careful.I paused outside Manny’s room, the soft shuffle of his blanket and the gentle hum of his breathing reaching me even before I opened the door. Lexi was there, of course. She perched beside him on the bed, speaking softly,

Danny’s POVThe dream returned that night, heavier than the last, more urgent. And of course, Kiran appeared, stepping out of shadows that seemed almost alive, eyes burning like molten coals, voice both familiar and threatening.“Danny,” he said, tone low, promising yet bitter. “I am your blood. I am the strength you have been searching for.”I swallowed hard even as I slept, the sound of my own heartbeat echoing in the dream like a drum in an empty hall. I knew I was dreaming, I knew I could wake the fuck up, but I didn't do that, it was more difficult than continuing the dream. Kiran reached out to me, and for a moment, I felt the pull of him, a pull made not of chains but of something older, primal, and unyielding. “The red fang pack will never love you,” he whispered. “But I will, and that is because I am your blood. I will never leave you.”I tried to speak, tried to ask how he could be here, alive, when everything I knew had said otherwise. My mouth opened, but no words came

Jean’s POVThe house was unusually quiet that afternoon, the sort of quiet that presses against your ears and makes each small sound feel deafening. The kids had gone on their break and were actively playing outside, I moved slowly through the packhouse, glancing at rooms that were usually bustling with life, yet now empty. I expected to find Manny resting in his room or Lexi with him, but there was nothing. The silence unsettled me, tugging at some uneasy part of my mind that I tried to ignore.I decided to keep myself busy. If Manny was going to get better, he would need care, and I would give it, even if my heart wasn’t fully in it. The kitchen was calm, I moved with purpose, gathering herbs and ingredients, chopping and mixing, focusing on the rhythm of my work so that my mind could stay distracted. Each movement was deliberate, each breath measured. I had made potions before, but today I felt the weight of the world pressing on me, whispering that no matter what I did, it migh
