chapter 31

I didn’t want to admit that they were right. I was living like I would leave here at the drop of a hat. I was still waiting for something to go wrong. Was that a good thing? No, it was not, but what was the point of knowing who was whose sister when I wouldn’t be staying long? It was insane how quickly they noticed how half-hearted I was being.“Alright fine, Sarah, you mentioned something about them being pack royalty. What did you mean by that?” I asked Sarah. She clapped her hands excitedly, went to her bed, and got comfortable.“It’s time for a history lesson.”“Oh no.” Camille moaned.“Oh yes.” She responded.“There are other ways for you to tell her what she needs to know without you giving her a history of the pack,” Camille said.“But this is more fun,” Sarah said.“Ask her if she wants a history lesson or the rundown version.”“The rundown version,” I responded immediately without being asked. It seemed Sarah had forgotten how tired I was.“Well you’re no fun, but fine. I sha

A brand new day meant more time at the clinic. This time I went in by 8am. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t working under Madam Thorpe, I couldn’t risk a repeat of yesterday morning.“Good morning Doc!” I greeted her cheerfully as I entered her department. As was customary, I gave a small bow of my head. All this while I thought the head bow was because she was a high-ranking doctor in the pack, turns out it was because she was from the Beta’s family.“Lilliana, wonderful, you’re here early. That’s an outstanding work ethic. Shows you are eager to learn.”Guess I made the right choice then.“I’m always happy to work,” I responded cheerfully.I spoke too soon. It was almost 4pm and I had barely been able to have 10 minutes to myself. I thought today would be like yesterday- stay in the lab, work on the tests but I was wrong. Goddess was I wrong! The day had started out the way I intended, but when the patients started to come in, I became a messenger bird. Doc used me to communicate with

chapter 33

I left him in the room to mope and worry about the girl who was literally beneath his feet. I returned to the lab where Doc was patiently waiting for me.“I was beginning to wonder if you got lost on your way to the vending machine, I was going to send out a search party.” She joked as she collected the coffees from me.“Oh sorry, I just ran into someone I knew and figured I should say hi.”, I responded, chuckling lightly at her joke.“So, you’ve been making friends here at the pack then? That’s good. When I first saw you, I thought you were going to be stubborn about the people you let into your life, but I’m glad to hear you’ve let some people in.”I was still stubborn about that, and also didn’t think it was important to insist the person wasn’t actually my friend. I also decided to tell her why said person was here in the first place.“He was looking for Bianca.”, I said. She froze for a bit, then continued to drink her coffee.“Really?” She asked feigning disinterest, “What did

“Well, that's good.” I responded, “We’re still no closer to figuring out what's wrong with them though.” “Wait really? Then it's a lot more serious than.” She said in a panicked voice. “Well, the only thing I'm happy about is that we haven't lost anyone.” I said thoughtfully, “Even though it's only been the second day, there've been close calls.” “Whoa, that's scary. I thought the clinic said everything was under control.” She said, “They sent out a message and everything.” “Things are under control, it's not like they can say ‘oh people are almost dying but that is not cause for alarm’” I said to her. “I guess you're right about that. Can't have people panicking, especially humans.” “Why especially humans?” “They get hysterical if there's even a semblance of the control they believe they have starts to slip. It's insane really.” “Wait, aren't we also like that?” I asked her, confused. I recalled how, at the Waning Moon pack, there was panic when they heard about the raiders b

Whoa! When did I get so selfish? I'd only spent three months here and I was already changing into some brat who felt entitled to fame just because she concocted a few things. That was insane and hard for me to digest about myself.Sarah and Camille had made up with a hug and all was right in the world. I needed to stop having thoughts like the one I just had. That was dangerous. “Wow, girls hugging. Can I join?” Jordan said as he leaned against the door, a grin on his face.Wow, we'd forgotten to close our door after we got back. That was a huge mistake on our side, but what made him think he had the right to just stand there and watch us, or rather, Sarah? Though it looked like his eyes were trained on all of us, I could tell he was only looking at Sarah.“You disgusting pig!” Camille exclaimed, “Were you watching us? How long have you been standing there?”“Oh, don’t be so hysterical. You guys were the ones who left the door open. Why else would you do that if not to invite people

Despite all my best efforts, I did not find Bianca, nor did I find the lab, and it had already been a week. It was crazy how many times I snuck away trying to find some hidden entrance where I was hoping would lead to the lab but no such luck. I debated asking Doc about it, but that would lead to a round of questioning that I didn’t wish to answer, or I didn't think I could answer enough to throw away her suspicion. And boy was she suspicious. “Why are you leaving the room a lot?” She demanded that I go on yet another bathroom trip. “What?” I replied, feigning ignorance. “You heard me. Why are you leaving the room so much?” She asked again, eyes narrowed at me in suspicion. “Uh…” My mind scrambled for a response. “To use the bathroom. I told you this already. Why else would I have to leave the room? Unless, of course, you're sending me on an errand.” I finally said. Her eyes became less narrowed but it was only a little bit. She still trained those eyes on me in suspicion.

They were gorgeous flowering plants. They had their regular green stalks and leaves, but the flowers-the flowers were an ombre hue of blue and purple, while others were orange and red. The colors red and blue started at the tips of the petals before bleeding into the purple and red, which were the inner parts. They looked insanely beautiful. “It took us a long time before we finally got what we needed to give us these.” She said. With much difficulty, I tore my eyes away from them and they roamed the room instead. I finally noticed the other people in lab coats hard at work, mixing and blending and cutting and boiling and everything else. A lot was happening. Some of them greeted Doc and nodded their heads at me while those who couldn't do so merely nodded their heads. “So this is it,” she said, arms stretched wide, “the underground lab. What do you think?” What did I think? I thought it was amazing. I still didn’t know what they were doing but the level of dedication and a

“ Are you from the Waning Moon pack?” I asked him suddenly. My question startled him. I could see that. He widened his eyes in surprise, and everyone else’s eyes darted between us, probably wondering what our connection was.“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He said in response.“I’m sure you do. Your eyes are grey like mine, not red like the rest of the people here. And as far as I know, grey eyes are the trademark of the Waning Moon. So you are from the pack.” I insisted.“So I have grey eyes. So what? That doesn’t mean I’m from that pack.” Malice bled into his tone as he said ‘that pack’, “It could just mean one of my parents is from there.”True, that was a possibility. When wolves from two different packs mated, the dominant wolf genes decided eye color, so perhaps his dominant wolf gene was from the Waning Moon pack.“That’s an interesting explanation I guess.”“Okay, okay.” Bonnie said, waving her hands, “Before tensions rise even more. I can vouch for Mace, he grew up

Her response shocked me. Why not?It didn’t take a genius to know that having deadlier aconite amongst wolves was a bad, terrible, extremely insane idea, but I guess it did take a genius to know that. Here was Doc, who I thought was genius-level smart, creating something that sounded like it could end the lives of wolves so easily.“I still don’t understand,” I said wearily. She sighed almost as though she was disappointed in me. “You’re probably thinking why such a thing was created in the first place aren’t you?” She began, “But think about it. War is coming, child, wouldn’t it be better to have something we could use to defend ourselves all at once and get rid of those who would dare to question the power of this pack in one fell swoop.”“War?” I asked even more confused, “What war? There hasn’t been a war for years now.”“Just because there hasn’t been one, doesn’t mean one won’t come.” She responded calmly, even though the look in her eyes was that of a crazed woman. “One must a

The day still had some extra hours, so instead of heading back to the hostel, I decided to get something to eat. All that talk of war was making me crave ice cream. So I took a detour at the ice cream shop Camille took me to once. I had missed ice cream, it was another thing that had turned into a luxury I couldn’t afford while I was at my former pack. But now, with the money I got from Madam Thorpe as compensation for taking credit for my work, I could eat all the ice cream I wanted. Granted, I did put the majority of it into a savings account that I opened up, so there’s that. It was always good to have emergency money.I opened the door to the shop and it dinged as though it was welcoming me. The atmosphere changed from the damp, hot air outside to the cool, refreshing, sweet-smelling air inside the shop. It was fairly empty, and I headed over to the counter, ready to place my order. I debated getting the ice cream to go, but I needed some time to myself to process my thoughts, bec
